Important product distinction: The documented “canvas” and “Workflows” features in the sources for this guide belong to Microsoft Copilot, not GitHub Copilot. Microsoft Copilot Pages is an editable workspace beside Copilot Chat; Workflows is a separate feature for creating supported Microsoft 365 automations. Neither is a GitHub Copilot canvas feature established by the available official documentation. If you meant GitHub Copilot specifically, these steps do not apply.

Pages and Workflows solve different problems

Use Copilot Pages when you want to turn a Copilot Chat response into a persistent piece of content that you can edit and share. Use Workflows when you want Copilot to create an automation that responds to a schedule or event and performs supported actions across Microsoft 365 services. Pages do not run workflow automations.

Feature Best for How you work with it Main constraint
Copilot Pages Drafts, project briefs, meeting notes, and other content that needs revisions or collaboration Move a chat response into a Page, edit it, and ask Copilot to revise or extend content Availability depends on account eligibility, storage, and organization controls
Workflows Automating supported tasks across Microsoft 365 Describe the trigger and desired actions, review the generated workflow, test it, and manage it Early access is limited, and only a limited set of Microsoft 365 connectors is supported

Microsoft uses “canvas” in another product context, too: Power Apps canvas apps are custom business applications built on a design surface. They are not Copilot Pages. Choose Pages for an editable Copilot workspace; choose Power Apps when you want to build an application interface over business data. See Microsoft’s guide to building canvas applications.

How to create an editable Copilot Page

  1. Start a chat about a lasting deliverable. In Copilot Chat, describe the material you need—for example, a project brief or meeting notes. Pages are suited to content you expect to revisit, edit, or share, rather than a one-off answer.
  2. Create the Page. Start a Page from the new-chat interface, or use Edit in Pages on a Copilot response. Microsoft’s current guidance says the Page opens beside Copilot Chat. The exact controls may vary with the account and interface available to you. See Microsoft’s Pages setup guidance.
  3. Give it a clear title and shape the content. Edit the text directly. To revise a passage with Copilot, select the text and request a change; review the proposed revision before applying it. Microsoft describes these editing and collaboration capabilities in its Copilot Pages instructions and Pages overview.
  4. Check storage and sharing access. Page availability and collaboration depend on account eligibility, storage, and organization settings. Confirm that your account can use the feature before planning team work around it.

How to build a workflow in Microsoft Copilot

  1. Confirm that Workflows is available to you. Microsoft describes Workflows as a Frontier early-access feature rolling out to eligible users in selected markets and languages. Its April 2026 guidance says the rollout starts in the United States and English for eligible Microsoft 365 consumer plans; availability is not universal. Check Microsoft’s current Workflows guide and your account before designing an automation.
  2. Check the connector before writing a detailed request. Workflows supports a limited set of Microsoft 365 connectors. Microsoft says non-Microsoft and custom connectors are not supported. If the service or destination you need is not in the supported set, this feature may not be able to complete the task.
  3. Describe the automation in plain language. State what starts it, what actions should follow, where the result should go, and what outcome you expect. For example, specify the triggering event and the supported Microsoft 365 service that should receive the result. Avoid assuming a trigger or connector is available until you verify it.
  4. Review the generated workflow. Inspect the visual designer and confirm that the trigger, actions, and destination match your request. Test the workflow and inspect its result before relying on it.
  5. Monitor and manage it. Use the Workflows or Activity area described in Microsoft’s guide to check and manage the automation. A workflow that was generated is not, by itself, proof that it has run successfully.

Use a Page to document a workflow, not to run it

If a team needs to review an automation, you can keep its purpose, inputs, and expected outcome in a Copilot Page. That gives people an editable document to discuss while the separate workflow handles supported automated actions. This is a practical way to organize the work, not a claim that Pages and Workflows are one integrated feature.

Why you may not see Pages or Workflows

Pages access depends on account and storage

Microsoft Support says work or school users can access Pages when they have SharePoint or OneDrive storage, including some users without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. For personal accounts, access depends on eligible Microsoft 365 subscription plans. Plan names and eligibility can change, so check the current Pages eligibility guidance. An organization’s controls may also affect access.

Workflows is a limited rollout

Workflows is described as Frontier early access in selected markets and languages, not a feature available to every Copilot user. If you cannot find it, your account may not be included in the rollout. A required connector may also be unavailable even when Workflows itself is visible.

Power Apps Copilot features are separate

Copilot embedded in Power Apps canvas apps has its own prerequisites and is separate from Pages and Workflows. Microsoft Learn’s October 1, 2026 documentation describes that feature as a preview, requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, and says an app can use SharePoint or Dataverse as its data source, but not both in the same app. See Microsoft’s Power Apps Copilot documentation. A separate older custom-Copilot integration for canvas apps has a different lifecycle: Microsoft says adding it to new canvas apps was discontinued starting February 2, 2026. Do not treat that legacy integration as Pages or Workflows; see the custom Copilot guidance.
