Coolify is an open-source deployment control plane: it gives you a dashboard and API to deploy and manage Docker-based applications, databases, and services on servers you provide. It coordinates deployments, but it is not the server hosting your workloads. With Coolify Cloud, Coolify operates the control plane; your applications still run on your connected servers.

What Coolify is—and what it is not

Coolify provides a platform-as-a-service-style workflow for deploying and operating software while leaving the underlying infrastructure in your hands. You connect Linux servers, then use Coolify’s dashboard or API to manage resources on them. The resources themselves run as Docker containers, networks, and storage on those servers.

That distinction is important: Coolify is a management layer, not a workload hosting provider. You must supply and maintain the machines that run your applications, databases, and services, whether you install Coolify yourself or use its managed control plane.

What you can deploy with Coolify

Coolify calls each deployable item a resource. Its documented resource types include applications, databases, and one-click services built from Docker Compose templates. Application deployment can start from several inputs:

  • A Git repository, from which Coolify can build and deploy an application.
  • A Dockerfile, which defines how to build the container image.
  • A Docker Compose definition for one or more coordinated containers.
  • A prebuilt image from a container registry.

For a typical deployment, you connect a server over SSH, choose a resource type and source, configure the resource, then have Coolify build or pull the image and start its Docker containers. For an HTTP-facing application, you can also configure a domain and route traffic through the server’s proxy. The platform provides deployment actions, environment-variable management, health checks, logs, storage configuration, and container lifecycle controls. One Coolify instance can manage resources on one or more connected servers.

Coolify’s official documentation advertises more than 300 one-click open-source service templates. That is a vendor-maintained catalog figure, not an independently counted or fixed total; the catalog may change.

How Coolify’s architecture works

Coolify separates the management path from the application runtime. Its control plane stores configuration and coordinates deployments, checks, and scheduled actions. It connects to workload servers over SSH and directs Docker operations there. Coolify says a persistent deployment agent is not required on connected servers.

Control plane and server components

In a standard self-hosted installation, the documented base control-plane stack includes the coolify application container, a PostgreSQL coolify-db container, and a Redis coolify-redis container. The reverse proxy runs with the server runtime where enabled. An optional Sentinel container can add monitoring data. A self-hosted Coolify instance can also run workloads on the same machine, though its control-plane containers and resource containers remain separate.

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

What happens when someone visits an application

  1. DNS or an upstream network directs the request to the server hosting the application.
  2. The reverse proxy on that server receives the request and forwards it to the appropriate container over Docker networking.
  3. The application container serves the request. The request does not pass through the Coolify dashboard or API.

This separation means that control actions and application traffic use different paths. If the Coolify control plane is unavailable, running containers remain on their workload servers, but the dashboard and its deployment automation are unavailable until the control plane returns. That does not guarantee the application will remain available: the workload server and application must also stay healthy.

Because the deployed resources are standard Docker containers, networks, and storage, operators can inspect them with Docker tools on the server where they run.

Who Coolify is suited to

Coolify can suit developers, self-hosters, and small teams who want a dashboard for deploying Docker workloads without handing over control of their infrastructure. Documented use cases include:

  • Deploying an application from source code or a Dockerfile to a Linux server.
  • Running an application composed of multiple services with Docker Compose.
  • Operating a database with persistent storage and a separately configured backup plan.
  • Launching a preconfigured self-hosted service from the template catalog.
  • Managing resources across multiple connected servers from one control plane.

It is a less hands-off choice than a hosting platform that supplies and manages the application servers. You remain responsible for those servers and the workloads on them.

Self-hosted Coolify or Coolify Cloud?

The main difference is who operates the Coolify control plane. In both models, you supply the servers where applications, databases, and services run.

Responsibility or cost Self-hosted Coolify Cloud
Who operates the Coolify control plane? You Coolify’s team
Who supplies workload servers? You You
Control-plane updates, backups, and recovery You Coolify’s team handles the managed control plane
Workload operating system, data, secrets, and workload backups You You
Listed control-plane price, as shown on Coolify’s pricing page on October 7, 2026 Free Forever $5/month for two connected servers, then $3/month per additional server

These are the listed control-plane prices, not the cost of the machines running your workloads. Prices and terms can change; check Coolify’s pricing page for current details.

Self-hosting gives you responsibility for installing, updating, backing up, and recovering Coolify itself, in addition to operating your workload infrastructure. Cloud shifts control-plane operations to Coolify’s team, but it does not transfer responsibility for your servers, operating-system updates, firewalls, application and database data, secrets, or workload backups.

Self-hosting requirements and setup considerations

Coolify’s self-hosted guide lists a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of free disk space, on either amd64 or arm64 architecture. These are requirements for the Coolify instance, not a production sizing promise for arbitrary workloads. Actual needs increase with the applications you run, and running builds on the same server as Coolify can use substantial resources. The guide lists VPSs, dedicated servers, Linux virtual machines, 64-bit Raspberry Pi setups, laptops, and other Linux devices as possible server types.

The installation guide recommends starting with a fresh server when possible, configuring SSH and firewall access, and creating the admin account promptly. For recovery, it calls out /data/coolify/source/.env, which contains installation secrets such as the application key. Back up that file securely as part of the control-plane recovery plan. These are vendor-documented setup cautions; workload-specific sizing and security needs still depend on your environment.

Persistent storage is not a backup

Containers can be replaced during redeployment. Data that must survive should be stored outside the replaceable container, for example in a named Docker volume or bind mount configured as persistent storage. Changes kept only inside a container can disappear when that container is removed.

Persistent storage helps data survive container replacement; it does not protect against accidental deletion, server failure, corruption, or other data loss. Configure backups separately and test that you can restore them. Coolify’s documentation explicitly warns that persistent storage is not a backup.

Responsibilities that remain yours

Regardless of which control-plane model you choose, plan to manage the infrastructure and workloads Coolify connects to. That includes selecting and paying for servers, applying operating-system updates, maintaining SSH access and firewall rules, configuring DNS, protecting exposed workloads and secrets, and safeguarding application and database data. With self-hosted Coolify, add control-plane updates, backups, and recovery to that list.
