Cook Islands Police were still seeking legal advice on how to dispose of 26.49 kilograms of cocaine reported to have washed ashore on Mitiaro’s reef in July 2026, according to a Cook Islands News report published 1 October. The report does not say what advice police received, which disposal method they chose, or whether the material has since been disposed of.

Cook Islands News reported that 19 packages described as allegedly containing cocaine washed ashore on the reef at Mitiaro in July 2026. The report gave the total reported quantity as 26.49 kilograms. The accessible report material does not provide forensic confirmation, details of how the packages were found, or information about who found them or held them afterward. What official sources do—and do not—establish
The Cook Islands Office of the Public Service Commissioner lists Crown Law Cook Islands and the Ministry of Justice among justice-sector information sources. A separate Pacific case is not a precedent for Mitiaro
In a separate case, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force said a 500-kilogram cocaine seizure was destroyed by incineration in 2019 after approval from relevant authorities. Its statement also described support from the Australian Federal Police, Solomon Islands police-support advisors, Customs, and the Ports Authority. What remains unanswered
