You can control an Android phone from a computer over USB without root, ADB, USB debugging, or installing an app on the phone by using scrcpy’s OTG mode. Run scrcpy --otg on the computer. The crucial trade-off: OTG mode sends keyboard and mouse input but does not show the phone’s screen or play its audio on the computer.
Use scrcpy OTG mode for keyboard and mouse control
scrcpy runs on your computer; its OTG mode makes the computer’s keyboard and mouse act like USB input devices connected to the Android phone. The phone does not need a scrcpy app. Genymobile documents OTG as using Android Open Accessory (AOA) input without ADB, and says USB debugging is not necessary.
- Install or obtain scrcpy for your computer from the official Genymobile scrcpy repository. On Windows, follow the project’s official Windows instructions; the project describes scrcpy as a command-line application and lists release packages and package-manager options.
- Connect the Android phone to the computer with a USB data connection and a cable compatible with both devices’ ports.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the scrcpy installation location, then run
scrcpy --otg. - Use the computer’s keyboard and mouse to interact with the phone. The exact behavior can vary by device; the project does not publish a complete device-by-device compatibility list.
To enable a gamepad as well, the documented command is scrcpy --otg --gamepad=aoa. OTG works only over USB; it does not use a wireless connection.

What OTG mode does—and does not—provide
OTG is an input-control mode, not desktop screen mirroring. It disables video and audio, so you cannot use it to watch the phone display or hear phone audio on the PC. If seeing the screen in a computer window is essential, use standard scrcpy instead, provided you can enable USB debugging.

Requirements and safe download
- Android: The scrcpy project lists Android API 21 (Android 5.0) as its minimum requirement.
- Computer: The project supports Linux, Windows, and macOS.
- Connection: OTG requires USB and a cable that fits both ports and supports data; a charge-only cable will not provide the required connection.
- Phone setup: OTG does not require root, an app installed on the phone, ADB, or USB debugging.
- Download source: Genymobile identifies its GitHub repository as the only official scrcpy source and warns against downloading releases from unrelated sites.
These requirements come from the scrcpy project documentation. The project describes scrcpy as free and open source.

Android’s ADB documentation explains that using ADB with a USB-connected device requires enabling USB debugging in Developer options. On supported Android versions, the phone also presents an RSA authorization dialog to protect against unauthorized debugging commands. That is why ordinary scrcpy mirroring does not meet the no-ADB requirement, while OTG does.

Troubleshoot a phone that does not respond
- Check the connection: Confirm that the cable supports data, both ends are firmly connected, and the computer recognizes a USB connection. Try another compatible cable or port if needed.
- Confirm the mode: Run
scrcpy --otg. Do not expect the standard mirroring window in OTG mode; its lack of video is intentional. - Check platform instructions: Use the OTG and operating-system guidance in the official scrcpy repository for the computer you are using.
- Do not apply the wrong debugging fix: Genymobile notes that some Xiaomi devices may need “USB debugging (Security Settings)” enabled and a reboot for keyboard and mouse control through the ordinary API-injection path. That setting is not an OTG requirement; OTG avoids ADB and USB debugging.
When to choose standard scrcpy instead
Choose standard scrcpy only if you need the phone’s display on the PC and are willing to enable USB debugging. Follow the project’s setup instructions for your platform, enable USB debugging in Android’s Developer options, connect the phone, and authorize the computer if Android displays an RSA prompt. Standard scrcpy can mirror and control without root or a companion app installed on the phone, but it is a different workflow from OTG.
