Hostinger is the better starting point for most beginners who want a website hosted without managing a server. Contabo is the better fit if you specifically need VPS or dedicated infrastructure and are comfortable administering it yourself. Neither provider’s published pages show that one is faster or more reliable, so this article does not name a speed winner.
The prices below were read on 7 October 2026. They change often, and they are shown with the terms, tax treatment and resources that each provider lists, so compare them only against the same details.
Which option fits your situation
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want a WordPress or small business site and do not want to touch a server | Hostinger managed web hosting | Hostinger sells this as its integrated website plan, with site limits, storage and bundled features listed on the plan page. |
| You want root-level VPS control, with backups and snapshots included | Hostinger KVM VPS | Hostinger lists KVM 1 to KVM 8 with weekly backups and manual snapshots. You still need to be able to run the server. |
| You want a low displayed monthly price for a VPS with high vCPU counts and unlimited traffic | Contabo Cloud VPS | Contabo’s listed Cloud VPS plans carry lower displayed monthly rates, but the unlimited traffic is subject to a fair-use policy. |
| You need a dedicated server, storage-focused VPS or a performance VPS on AMD EPYC with NVMe | Contabo | Contabo’s menu is broader than Hostinger’s VPS range for specialized infrastructure. |
| Your main concern is proven speed or uptime | Neither, on vendor evidence alone | Provider pages list specifications and prices, not independent speed tests. Run your own test with your workload before deciding. |
The two providers sell different products
Hostinger sells managed website hosting alongside its VPS plans. Its shared hosting is described as beginner-friendly. Its VPS FAQ gives the basic definition this comparison relies on:
Recommended Free Tools
“A virtual private server (VPS) is a type of hosting that provides an isolated environment with its own software, configuration, data, and resources, including CPU, RAM, storage, and bandwidth.” (Hostinger VPS FAQ)
Hostinger’s VPS FAQ also says VPS is intended for users who know how to manage a virtual server. Contabo’s pricing and website pages focus on VPS, Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS) and dedicated servers. Contabo’s website hosting is framed around VPS rather than managed plans. If you pick Contabo for a website, you are taking on server administration.
Current plan prices and specifications
Hostinger VPS (US pricing page)
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | NVMe storage | Bandwidth | Introductory monthly | Renewal monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KVM 1 | 1 | 4 GB | 50 GB | 4 TB | $6.49 | $11.99 |
| KVM 2 | 2 | 8 GB | 100 GB | 8 TB | $8.99 | $14.99 |
| KVM 4 | 4 | 16 GB | 200 GB | 16 TB | $12.99 | $28.99 |
| KVM 8 | 8 | 32 GB | 400 GB | 32 TB | $25.99 | $49.99 |
The page lists the introductory and renewal rates over a two-year term. Hostinger states that VPS plans are paid upfront and that each monthly figure is the total cost divided by the number of months. Multiplying the displayed monthly rate by 24 gives the upfront total for the introductory period: $155.76 for KVM 1, $215.76 for KVM 2, $311.76 for KVM 4 and $623.76 for KVM 8. Those totals are our arithmetic from the displayed rates, not figures Hostinger prints.

Contabo (US pricing page)
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Port | Traffic | Displayed monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS 4 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | $4.40 |
| Cloud VPS 6 | 6 | 12 GB | 200 GB SSD | 300 Mbit/s | Unlimited, subject to fair use | $6.00 |
The Contabo US page labels these listings as 24-month terms and says the prices include VAT. It does not state the upfront total or the renewal rate on the pages reviewed, so confirm both at checkout. The same page lists performance VPS with AMD EPYC processors and NVMe storage, Storage VPS, VDS and dedicated servers. Quote a specific Contabo configuration only after checking its current availability and the pricing for your location.
How to compare total cost fairly
- Match the term. Hostinger’s VPS and managed rates are shown over 24 and 48 months respectively, while Contabo’s are listed over 24 months. Compare a 24-month total with a 24-month total.
- Record the upfront total, not only the monthly figure. Hostinger’s VPS plans are paid upfront.
- Record the renewal rate separately. Hostinger’s renewal rates are substantially higher than its introductory rates on every VPS tier listed.
- Check the tax basis. Hostinger’s managed prices exclude VAT, while Contabo’s US prices include it. Compare pre-tax with pre-tax, or confirm the tax shown at checkout for your country.
- Add the cost of any backup or snapshot feature that is not included in the plan you choose.
A concrete example shows why the specifications matter as much as the price. Hostinger’s KVM 4 lists 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe storage and 16 TB bandwidth at $12.99 per month introductory and $28.99 renewal. Contabo’s Cloud VPS 6 lists 6 vCPU, 12 GB RAM, 200 GB SSD and unlimited traffic at $6.00 per month. Contabo offers more vCPUs at a lower displayed rate, but less RAM. The two bandwidth policies also differ, since Hostinger states a fixed allocation and Contabo’s unlimited traffic is subject to fair use. Whether either plan is better depends on the workload you run.
Backups, uptime and performance claims
- Hostinger VPS: weekly backups and manual snapshots are listed. Hostinger also advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee. Confirm which products that guarantee covers before you buy.
- Contabo: backup and snapshot inclusions were not confirmed for the specific Cloud VPS plans in this comparison. Check the order page for the chosen configuration and for any backup add-on.
- Uptime: Contabo’s home page advertises 99.996% uptime. That is Contabo’s own marketing claim. No independent measurement confirmed it for this article.
- Speed: CPU, RAM and storage figures describe capacity, not measured performance. Test a comparable plan in the location your visitors use before choosing.
Traffic policy, locations and tax
Contabo’s pricing page says unusually high or disruptive traffic may be throttled to keep access fair. Treat “unlimited” as a policy with conditions, not as an unrestricted allowance. Hostinger says it operates global locations, so choose the one closest to your audience and confirm which locations are available for the plan you pick. Contabo’s available locations were not confirmed for this comparison.

Which host to choose
Choose Hostinger managed web hosting if
- You want a website without routine server administration.
- You can accept a 48-month upfront term to get the displayed introductory rate.
- You have checked the renewal rate, which is $10.99, $16.99 or $25.99 per month for the listed plans, and that the site limits and storage meet your needs.
Choose Hostinger VPS if
- You want KVM VPS with root access and listed weekly backups and snapshots.
- You can manage a virtual server yourself.
- The listed bandwidth for the tier suits your traffic, and you have budgeted for the higher renewal rate.
Choose Contabo if
- You specifically need VPS, VDS or dedicated infrastructure.
- You are comfortable administering the server yourself.
- You have confirmed the exact location, total term cost, backup inclusions and fair-use policy for the configuration you intend to buy.
Do not decide on speed or reliability claims alone. Provider pages do not establish a winner on either measure, and a fair comparison needs equivalent plans, locations and a test that reflects your workload.
