There is no universal winner between Contabo and A Small Orange. They sell different kinds of hosting. Contabo’s central products are virtual private servers (VPS) and dedicated servers, where you get configurable resources and are expected to handle some server administration. A Small Orange’s entry point is shared hosting, where the provider manages the server, installs server software and applies security updates for you. Choose by the level of control you want first, then compare live prices and plan limits, because neither provider’s current pricing or plan availability could be fully confirmed for September 2026. The provider pages below were checked in early October 2026, so treat every price as a snapshot.

Which provider fits your situation

Start with one question: do you want to run a server, or do you want someone else to run it? That decision matters more than any single feature.

  • A Small Orange shared hosting suits a modest website that values managed maintenance. A Small Orange describes shared plans for personal sites, blogs, small businesses, small shops and event websites with minimal to average traffic. Confirm the plan is orderable and that its limits match your site before buying.
  • Contabo VPS suits a technically capable owner who needs specific virtual-server resources. Contabo’s website-hosting page lists use cases from personal blogs and portfolios through small businesses, online stores, higher-traffic sites and web applications, and notes that basic server administration, command-line and web-technology knowledge can help.
  • Shops, high-traffic properties and business-critical sites need a like-for-like comparison of the exact managed, business or VPS tier on each side. Check backups, recovery procedures, support response commitments, resource limits and total cost before deciding. The public pages reviewed do not show that either provider is the better choice for these workloads.

What each provider offers

Contabo

Contabo presents Cloud VPS and dedicated, bare-metal servers as its main offerings. Its website-hosting VPS page lists Cloud VPS tiers with vCPU count, RAM, SSD storage, port speed and an unlimited-traffic label. Those tier-by-tier specifications are the main reason to choose Contabo: you can match the server to a workload rather than accepting a fixed shared-account allocation.

Two cautions apply. Contabo’s promotional prices are labeled as applying for the first 24 months, so they do not show what you will pay after that period. Contabo’s pages also could not be opened directly during review, so the specifications above come from indexed excerpts and should be checked against the live plan page before you rely on them.

A Small Orange

A Small Orange’s plan guide lists six product families: shared hosting, Clementine managed hosting, reseller hosting, business hosting, Cloud VPS and dedicated servers. They serve different needs, so they should not be compared as if they were interchangeable plans.

Its shared-hosting overview says that with shared hosting, managing the server, installing server software and performing security updates are the provider’s job. The page also names cPanel and 24/7 support for shared accounts, and states 99.9% uptime, which is the provider’s own claim rather than an independently measured figure.

Product family What A Small Orange says about it Server administration noted
Shared hosting Personal sites, blogs, small businesses, small shops and event sites with minimal to average traffic; includes cPanel, Softaculous, FTP and a Weebly website builder Provider manages the server, installs server software and applies security updates

Costs: what the evidence does and does not show

No current, like-for-like price comparison can be stated from the material reviewed. Contabo’s promotional rates are labeled as first-24-month prices, and A Small Orange’s pages describe prepaid discounts and prorated credits without listing current comparable plan prices. A price winner for September 2026 therefore cannot be named.

When you compare quotes, work out the full cost across the term you plan to keep the site, not the first invoice. Add the renewal amount, any setup charge, taxes and the currency the price is billed in. Price a shared plan and a VPS only against workloads they can really handle.

Refund and cancellation terms

A Small Orange’s contract help page says: “You pay month to month and can cancel at any time.” It also describes prorated credit for eligible prepaid time after applicable discounts. Its separate refund page states a 90-day money-back guarantee for shared hosting, reseller packages, Cloud VPS and Hybrid plans. That guarantee has exclusions and eligibility conditions, including first-account eligibility, so it is not a blanket promise. Check the live terms for the exact plan at checkout.

Contabo’s refund and cancellation terms were not established in the pages reviewed. Read its order terms before purchase.

Uptime claims

Both providers publish uptime figures, and both are their own claims. Contabo’s homepage advertises 99.996% uptime, but the measurement window is not defined in the excerpt reviewed. A Small Orange’s shared-hosting overview states 99.9% uptime. Neither figure is independently measured in the sources reviewed, and no independent performance test or head-to-head benchmark was found. Do not treat either figure as proof that one host is faster or more reliable than the other.

Checklist before you choose

  • Decide whether you want to administer a server, or whether the provider should handle maintenance and security updates.
  • Confirm the exact plan is currently orderable in your region.
  • Record the CPU, memory, storage, traffic and port limits of that plan.
  • Write down the first-term price and the renewal price, including taxes and currency.
  • Read the live refund and cancellation terms and check whether your account qualifies.
  • Confirm the control panel and any backup, migration or monitoring features on the plan you select.
  • Ask for the support scope in writing if you depend on fast response times.

If your site is modest and you prefer managed maintenance, A Small Orange shared hosting is the more natural fit. If you need specific virtual-server resources and can administer them, Contabo’s VPS is the better match. Verify the plan details and renewal pricing on each provider’s live site before you decide.
