Connecting a stylus depends on the exact pen and tablet pair. There is no single pairing method. An Apple Pencil on an iPad, a Samsung S Pen on a Galaxy tablet, and a Surface Pen on a Surface each use different steps, and some pens write without Bluetooth at all. Identify your tablet and pen models first, confirm that the manufacturer lists the combination as supported, and then follow that manufacturer’s procedure.

Step one: confirm your exact models

Before you touch any settings, write down the tablet model, the pen model, and the pen generation if the pen comes in more than one. Then check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for that exact pair. Compatibility is set by model, not by brand name.

  • Tablet model and operating system version (for example, iPadOS, One UI on a Galaxy tablet, or Windows on a Surface).
  • Pen model and generation. Apple’s pairing and charging steps differ by Pencil generation.
  • Whether the manufacturer lists the pen as supported for that tablet. Microsoft’s compatibility table, for example, lists by both Surface model and pen model.
  • Whether you need writing only, or writing plus Bluetooth features such as buttons, shortcuts, charging, or battery checks. These are separate capabilities on some models (covered below).

How the three main systems pair

The pairing trigger is the biggest difference between systems. Apple’s guide describes a physical connector and a Bluetooth prompt, Samsung relies on placing the pen in a designated spot on the tablet, and Microsoft uses the Windows Bluetooth menu with the pen’s button.

System (as covered by the manufacturer’s guide) How pairing starts Bluetooth role Charging Accessory needed
Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (10th generation) Connect the Pencil as Apple’s guide directs, then tap Pair when the prompt appears Pairing prompt requires Bluetooth to be on Described in Apple’s guide for this Pencil generation USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a compatible cable
Samsung S Pen on a supported Galaxy tablet Place the pen in the designated area on the back of the tablet Pairing, charging, and battery checks on supported models; not on every model (see the Galaxy FE note below) On some models, the same designated location charges the pen Not stated in Samsung’s pairing guide
Surface Pen (Bluetooth-capable) on a Surface Add the pen in Windows Bluetooth settings while the pen is in pairing mode Enables the top button’s shortcuts Not stated in Microsoft’s pairing steps Not stated in Microsoft’s pairing steps

Connecting an Apple Pencil to an iPad

Apple publishes a separate pairing and charging guide for each Pencil generation. The steps below follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for an Apple Pencil (1st generation) with an iPad (10th generation). Do not assume the same steps apply to other Pencil generations or iPad models.

  3. On the iPad, make sure Bluetooth is on.
  4. Connect the Pencil using the method in Apple’s guide for your generation.
  5. When the pairing prompt appears, tap Pair.

Connecting an S Pen to a Galaxy tablet

Samsung’s method is physical rather than menu-based. Place a supported S Pen in the designated location on the back of the tablet to pair it. The exact spot differs across tablet generations, so follow the diagram for your model in Samsung’s guide. On some models, the same location also charges the pen.

Galaxy FE tablets without BLE support

Samsung Support states, “The Galaxy Tab S9 FE, Tab S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE, and Tab S10 FE+ do not support BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy).” On those models, pairing, charging, and checking battery level through the pen are unavailable. The S Pen may still provide writing, so set expectations accordingly and do not assume Bluetooth-based features will work.

Surface Pen LED patterns

  • Continuous blinking: The pen is receiving power and trying to pair. Restart the Surface and try pairing again.
  • A brief blink of 2–3 seconds: The pen is probably already paired with another nearby Surface. Remove it from that device’s Bluetooth list, then pair it with your tablet.
  • Red or amber light: The pen has low power.

Apple Pencil

If pairing fails, check that Bluetooth is on, then reconnect the Pencil, following Apple’s guidance for your generation.

Choosing a stylus for your tablet

If you are buying a pen rather than connecting one you already own, compare options on these points:

  • Exact tablet compatibility and the stylus technology the tablet supports.
  • Whether basic writing works without Bluetooth features.
  • The pairing method required: physical attachment, a connector or adapter, or a Bluetooth menu.
  • How the pen is charged, and whether the tablet charges it.
  • Extra functions such as buttons, remote actions, pressure, tilt, or shortcuts, only where the manufacturer documents them for your exact models.

A generic tablet stylus is not the same as a model-specific pen. Do not assume a third-party pen will work with Apple Pencil, S Pen, or Surface Pen pairing features. Where the manufacturer requires an adapter or charger, buy that exact accessory.
