An AI agent can fail to reach financial data even when a user insists the password is correct. The usual causes fall into three classes: authentication or consent, unsupported or unavailable data, and API limits or poor error handling. Treating every failure as “retry the login” makes diagnosis slower and can create security and reliability problems.

Official OpenAI and Plaid documentation available in 2026 describes these failure classes, their control points, and the checks that separate them. The first-person incidents implied by some headlines are not established by that documentation, so the guidance below is framed as a practical troubleshooting model rather than a claim about a specific unverified implementation.

Problem 1: A valid password still produces a connection failure

A financial-data connection usually involves more than a username and password. The institution may require a one-time security challenge, renewed consent, an OAuth permission, or approval for a particular data product. A failure can therefore occur after the credentials have been entered correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can actually be wrong

  • The username or password is invalid, expired, or locked.
  • The institution requires a security step that has not been completed.
  • Consent has expired, been revoked, or does not cover the requested data.
  • The integration requested an OAuth permission or product scope that the user did not grant.
  • The institution and requested product combination is unsupported.
  • The institution is temporarily unavailable.

OpenAI’s help guidance for financial connections explicitly treats “Why can’t I connect or refresh my account?” as a symptom with multiple possible causes. A generic retry cannot distinguish them.

Fix the user-connection path first

  1. Record the symptom. Capture the exact operation, timestamp, institution, environment, provider, error code, message, and request ID. Remove passwords, access tokens, account numbers, and other sensitive values before storing or sharing logs.
  2. Test the institution directly. Ask the user to sign in through the institution’s normal website or app. Complete any multifactor, security-question, consent, or account-unlock step there. A direct sign-in failure is an institution or user-account issue, not an agent prompt issue.
  3. Check consent and requested scope. Confirm that the connection includes the product the agent is requesting, such as balances, transactions, holdings, or identity data. A previously authorized connection may need reauthorization when its consent expires or its scope changes.
  4. Verify support for the exact combination. “The institution is supported” does not prove that every account type, region, product, or data field is supported. Check the provider’s current institution and product coverage before changing code.
  5. Reconnect only when the error calls for it. Reauthentication is appropriate for expired credentials or consent. It is not a remedy for an unsupported product or a provider outage.

Keep authentication errors separate from application errors

Provider APIs commonly distinguish invalid credentials, missing permissions, unsupported products, institution unavailability, and rate limits. Preserve those distinctions in your agent’s error handling. For example, an invalid-credential response should lead to a user-facing sign-in or reset action; a missing-permission response should lead to a consent request; an institution-outage response should show a temporary status and a later retry window.

Do not let the language model infer that every failed tool call means “the password is wrong.” Pass the structured provider code and a short, safe explanation into the orchestration layer, then map it to a controlled action. Never return raw access tokens or full provider payloads to the model when a narrower status is sufficient.

Problem 2: The connection works, but the requested data is unavailable or not ready

A successful login does not guarantee that the requested dataset is ready, supported, current, or entitled for the user. Financial institutions and data partners expose different products on different schedules. “No data,” “not ready,” and “unsupported” are data-availability states, not authentication failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish the failure states

  • Not ready: The account is connected, but an initial sync or a particular product has not completed.
  • Unsupported: The provider does not offer the requested account type, field, geography, or product.
  • Unavailable: The institution or provider is experiencing a temporary outage.
  • Restricted: Terms, entitlements, or user consent limit how the data may be viewed, stored, copied, or redistributed.

These states require different responses. Waiting may solve an initial sync; changing the requested product may solve an unsupported field; retrying later may solve a short outage; none of them is fixed by asking the user to change a password.

Check readiness before invoking the agent

  1. Inspect the provider response for an explicit readiness, support, or availability code.
  2. Confirm that the requested product was included in the original consent and OAuth scope.
  3. Check whether the account has completed its first synchronization.
  4. Read the source timestamp and any delay label returned with the data.
  5. Tell the agent whether it may answer, must wait, or must decline because the data is absent or restricted.

Build these checks into the tool layer rather than relying on the model to notice an empty array. An empty transaction list can mean “no transactions,” “transactions not synchronized,” “product not entitled,” or “provider error.” Return an explicit status alongside the records so the agent cannot silently convert an unavailable dataset into a confident financial statement.

Account for documented delays

OpenAI’s listed ChatGPT for Financial Services documentation gives product-specific examples: Daloopa data may have a 24-hour delay and a limit of 3,000 datapoints per user per month, while Nasdaq data supplied through FMP may have a 15-minute delay. Those figures describe the named offering and can change; they are not universal guarantees for every connection.

Show the source and timestamp in the user interface and in the agent’s context. OpenAI’s Financial Services Terms state: “The time shown for source data does not guarantee that an AI response reflects the latest market conditions.” That warning matters whenever the agent summarizes prices, balances, earnings, or other time-sensitive information.

Respect data entitlements and downstream use

Before storing, copying, sharing, training on, or redistributing connected data or an agent’s output, check the applicable partner and provider terms. A user’s ability to view information does not automatically grant your application permission to retain it indefinitely or expose it to other users. Keep retention, audit, deletion, and access controls aligned with the source agreement and the user’s consent.

Problem 3: The integration is throttled, opaque, or unsafe under load

Once authentication and data readiness are correct, an agent can still fail because it calls an endpoint too often, retries too aggressively, or hides the provider’s diagnostic information. Rate limits are endpoint-specific and can vary by customer, environment, and time.

Use the endpoint-specific limit, not a universal retry rule

Plaid’s production documentation, checked in 2026, lists these examples per Item: /accounts/get allows 15 requests per minute, while /accounts/balance/get allows 5 requests per minute and 30 requests per hour. Plaid says the table is not exhaustive, thresholds can differ by customer, and limits can change. Treat those numbers as dated examples for Plaid production, not permanent limits for every provider.

Endpoint Documented production example Scope and qualification
/accounts/get 15 requests per minute Per Item; Plaid example checked in 2026
/accounts/balance/get 5 requests per minute; 30 requests per hour Per Item; Plaid example checked in 2026

Before publishing or hard-coding a numeric threshold, recheck the provider’s live documentation and the response returned by your account. A client-level quota, an endpoint quota, and a per-Item quota are different controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make retries safe

  1. Read the returned status and provider error code.
  2. Identify the endpoint, Item or account scope, environment, and retry-after value if supplied.
  3. Stop immediate repeated calls when the response indicates throttling.
  4. Use exponential backoff with jitter for transient failures, bounded by a maximum retry count.
  5. Cache data that does not need second-by-second refreshes and batch requests where the provider supports it.
  6. Separate user-triggered refreshes from background jobs so a burst of agent conversations cannot exhaust the same quota.

Do not retry invalid credentials, missing consent, unsupported products, or permission errors as though they were transient. Retrying those cases adds load without changing the outcome.

Secure keys and make failures observable

OpenAI says API keys are secrets and must not be exposed in client-side code. Keep provider credentials and model keys on a backend or other protected server boundary, restrict their permissions, rotate them, and redact them from logs. Give the browser or client a short-lived session capability rather than a reusable secret whenever your architecture permits it.

Log request IDs recommended by the API documentation, together with timestamps, endpoint names, environment, latency, status, and a redacted provider code. Structured error codes and messages make it possible to build deterministic handling and to give support teams enough context without disclosing financial data. Correlate the agent run, tool call, provider request, and user-visible response with an internal trace ID.

A practical diagnostic sequence

Use this order when an agent cannot connect, refresh, or answer from financial data:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Freeze the evidence. Save the exact failing operation, timestamp, provider, endpoint, environment, error code, message, and request ID. Redact credentials and sensitive account data.
  2. Classify the boundary. Decide whether the failure occurs in the user’s institution connection, your integration configuration, the provider API, or the model-agent layer.
  3. Verify direct access. Have the user sign in through the institution’s normal channel and complete required security or consent actions.
  4. Check scope and support. Confirm OAuth permissions, requested products, account type, geography, and field-level availability.
  5. Check readiness and freshness. Inspect synchronization status, source timestamps, delay labels, and entitlement restrictions before allowing the agent to summarize.
  6. Check throttling. Identify the exact endpoint and applicable per-Item, client, and hourly limits. Reduce bursts, cache safe results, and honor retry guidance.
  7. Reproduce with a minimal call. Use the smallest supported request in a non-production test path, then compare its structured response with the failing agent call.
  8. Escalate with identifiers. Send the provider’s request ID, time window, environment, and redacted error details to support. Never send secret keys in a ticket.

Using Plaid’s Dashboard MCP diagnostics

Plaid documents a Dashboard MCP server for Production diagnostics and analytics. It requires Production access and an OAuth token carrying the mcp:dashboard scope. Obtain that token through your backend, not from client-side code, and grant only the permissions needed for the diagnostic task.

  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Plaid also says the Dashboard MCP server is under active development, that breaking changes may occur, and that support is currently limited. Treat it as an operational aid rather than a guaranteed dependency for a critical user flow. Keep a fallback based on ordinary dashboard views, provider request IDs, and your own structured logs.

Designing the agent so the same failures do not recur

Return status with every data result

A tool response should identify the source, retrieval time, freshness or delay label, readiness state, entitlement state, and any safe-to-display warning. This prevents the model from treating an empty or stale result as a complete account view.

Separate actions by control point

  • User or institution: sign-in, multifactor authentication, account unlock, and consent renewal.
  • Integration: OAuth scope, product selection, field mapping, caching, and retry policy.
  • Provider: institution availability, endpoint limits, support coverage, and data synchronization.
  • Agent: tool selection, uncertainty language, refusal of unsupported claims, and display of source context.

Test failure paths deliberately

Test expired consent, invalid credentials, missing permissions, unsupported products, delayed synchronization, provider outage responses, and throttling responses independently. Verify that each case produces the intended user action, log entry, retry behavior, and model-facing status. A single “try again” branch is not an adequate financial-data recovery strategy.
