MCP, Claude tool use, and AWS response streaming solve different problems. MCP gives an AI application a standard way to discover and use capabilities exposed by servers. Claude tool use lets an application ask the model what to do with a tool, run that request in application code, and return the result. Lambda and API Gateway can stream an HTTP response to a user. Combining them can support an AI agent that responds incrementally, but MCP does not stream Claude’s tokens or make the full system real-time by itself.
What is MCP, and what does it standardize?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol for connecting AI applications to systems that hold data and provide capabilities. In an MCP arrangement, a host application connects to one or more MCP servers. A server can expose tools, resources, and prompts; the host and application decide how those offerings fit into the user’s request.
- Tools are functions the model can request, such as looking up a record or initiating an operation. The application remains responsible for deciding whether and how to execute a request.
- Resources provide context managed by the application, such as data that can help answer a question.
- Prompts are templates controlled by the user.
These roles are described in the MCP server overview published by the Model Context Protocol maintainers. MCP standardizes the connection and the way capabilities are represented; it does not decide whether an action is safe, grant the model authority to perform it, or specify how a user-facing HTTP response is delivered.

| Building block | What it does | What it does not do by itself |
|---|---|---|
| MCP | Standardizes how an AI host connects to servers that expose tools, resources, and prompts. | It does not execute a Claude tool request, stream model tokens to the user, or guarantee low latency. |
| Claude tool use | Lets an application supply tool definitions to Claude, receive a tool-use request, run application logic, and send the result back to the model. | A model’s request is not an executed action. The application must validate and dispatch it. |
| Lambda and API Gateway response streaming | Transfers an HTTP response in pieces as output becomes available, rather than waiting to send the whole response at once. | It does not create the agent loop or ensure every model, runtime, and client integration emits compatible streaming events. |
In an architecture that uses all three, MCP is the capability connection, Claude tool use is the model/application round trip, and AWS streaming is one possible delivery path back to the user. “Real-time” should describe what the user actually receives—such as incremental answer content or progress—not imply that the whole system has a guaranteed response time.

How does a Claude tool-use loop work with an MCP server?
The client-side tool-use pattern documented in AWS’s guide to completing an Amazon Bedrock model response illustrates the general orchestration flow. That guide is about Bedrock’s model/application-managed tool execution, not the Anthropic direct API. The following is a conceptual sequence, not a tested reference implementation or a set of exact Claude API request fields.
- The user submits a request. The host application receives it and determines which tools are relevant and available.
- The host sends Claude the request and tool definitions. The definitions describe capabilities that application code can handle, including capabilities the host has obtained from MCP servers.
- Claude may request a tool. The host treats that as a request to consider, not proof of permission or evidence that the operation has already happened.
- Application code validates and dispatches. It checks the requested tool and its inputs, applies authorization and other policy checks, and invokes the appropriate capability. If that capability comes from an MCP server, the host uses its MCP connection to reach it.
- The host returns the tool result to Claude. The model can use the result to produce a response to the original request.
- The host delivers the answer. It can return a completed response or, if the chosen model and AWS integration support compatible incremental output, send response content or progress as it becomes available.
Keep validation and authority in application code. A tool that reads data may need access controls; one that changes data may also need confirmation, idempotency safeguards, and a clear recovery path. The protocol connection does not replace those application decisions.
How do you connect Claude to an MCP server?
At the architectural level, the host application connects to an MCP server, learns what capabilities are available, makes appropriate tool definitions available to Claude, and mediates any requested execution. The exact code depends on the Claude API or client, MCP transport, SDK versions, and deployment design. The sources cited here do not establish exact Anthropic Messages API JSON fields, a complete runnable Claude SDK example, or a Lambda transport adapter, so those details should not be inferred from the general loop.

Version choice matters. The MCP maintainers announced specification version 2026-07-28 on July 28, 2026. The stable TypeScript SDK v2 documentation says that SDK implements this specification and runs on Node.js, Bun, and Deno. That establishes the SDK’s stated protocol support and listed runtimes; it does not establish that a particular Lambda adapter or Claude integration has been production-tested.
Check the protocol version before following an example
The maintainers describe the 2026-07-28 protocol core as stateless: initialization and protocol session identifiers are removed, requests carry their own metadata, and a request can be served by any instance behind ordinary load balancing. The release also says list and read responses can include ttlMs and cacheScope hints, moves tasks into an extension, hardens authorization, and formally deprecates legacy HTTP+SSE with a minimum twelve-month deprecation window.
Those changes mean an older session-oriented tutorial may not describe the current protocol. Match the MCP client and server versions to the protocol revision you intend to use, and check the relevant SDK documentation rather than assuming an old example applies unchanged. The specification announcement describes the deprecation window; it does not mean every older client has already stopped working.

Can AWS Lambda stream responses in real time?
Lambda can stream an HTTP response through a function URL or the InvokeWithResponseStream API. AWS also documents streaming when API Gateway invokes Lambda through a proxy integration. Streaming can deliver partial output earlier than a buffered response, which AWS identifies as useful for generative-AI time-to-first-byte reduction and incremental progress such as server-sent events. It is a delivery mode, not a latency guarantee: no measured end-to-end latency for this MCP, Claude, and Lambda combination is established here.
Lambda response streaming
- AWS’s current Lambda response-streaming documentation lists a maximum streamed response payload of 200 MB, compared with 6 MB for buffered responses.
- Streaming support depends on runtime and region. AWS says managed Node.js runtimes support it; other languages may require a custom runtime or the Lambda Web Adapter.
- Lambda function URLs do not support response streaming for functions in a VPC.
- A client disconnect does not necessarily stop the function. AWS warns that execution can continue after disconnect, and customers are billed for the full function duration.
API Gateway response streaming
- The documented mode is for REST APIs using
HTTP_PROXYorAWS_PROXYintegrations, including Lambda proxy integrations. The integration’s response transfer mode must be set toSTREAM; the default isBUFFERED. - AWS documents a maximum streaming period of up to 15 minutes. Regional and private endpoints have a five-minute idle timeout; edge-optimized endpoints have a 30-second idle timeout.
- Features that require a full response in advance—including endpoint caching and response transformation with VTL—are unavailable in streaming mode.
- A timed-out connection can close while the Lambda function continues running, so a disconnected user does not necessarily mean the work has stopped.
These are AWS platform limits and configuration conditions, not performance benchmarks. Confirm current regional and runtime support when designing a deployment; cloud-service behavior and limits can change.
Use the streaming response format expected by the integration
For a Lambda proxy integration configured for streaming, AWS’s setup guide requires the streaming invocation path and a response format consisting of metadata, a delimiter, and the streamed payload. The delimiter is eight null bytes and must appear within the first 16 KB. AWS says the API Gateway console selects the streaming invocation API when response transfer mode is configured as Stream. A conventional buffered proxy response should not be assumed to satisfy this protocol-specific format.

What should you decide before building the agent?
Choose the execution, protocol, delivery, and operational model separately. A decision in one category does not settle the others.
Execution: who runs each tool?
In the client-side pattern, the host application validates and executes tool requests, including requests routed to MCP-backed capabilities. AWS’s Bedrock guide also discusses provider-managed execution as a broader alternative, but that does not establish that the same setup applies to the direct Anthropic API. Do not assume the Bedrock execution model transfers unchanged to Claude.

Response delivery: buffer or stream?
Buffering is simpler when the user needs only the completed answer. Streaming can expose answer fragments or progress earlier, but requires compatible output all the way from the model-facing application to the HTTP client and brings endpoint and runtime constraints. Choose it for a user-facing reason, not because MCP itself implies streaming.
Operations: how will failures and risky actions be handled?
- Authenticate the user and authorize each tool operation; apply least privilege to server and cloud credentials.
- Validate tool names, argument shapes, and business rules before dispatch. Treat model-produced arguments as untrusted input.
- For mutating actions, plan for retries and duplicate requests with idempotency controls where appropriate.
- Record enough information to trace a request across the host, model interaction, MCP server, and Lambda without logging secrets or unnecessary sensitive data.
- Set sensible limits on execution time and handle timeouts, partial output, and disconnects. A client that stops receiving data may not stop Lambda work or its billable duration.
The MCP maintainers’ July 28, 2026 announcement describes authorization hardening in the new release. It does not remove the need to configure authorization and access control in the application and deployment.
