A regular laptop HDMI port usually sends video out; it does not accept the Xbox 360’s picture. To view gameplay on your laptop, connect the console to an external USB HDMI capture card, then connect that card to the laptop over USB and open its capture software.
Why a direct HDMI connection usually does not work
On most laptops, HDMI is an output for sending the laptop’s picture to a TV or monitor—not an input for showing another device’s picture on the laptop screen. Plugging an Xbox 360 into that port with an HDMI cable alone therefore will not display gameplay.
The practical route is a capture card: the Xbox sends video to the card’s HDMI input, and the card sends the captured video to the laptop over USB. Elgato documents this setup for the Xbox 360 and its Game Capture HD60 S in its Xbox 360 setup guide.
What you need before connecting
- An Xbox 360 revision with an HDMI output. If your console does not have one, identify its model and available video outputs before selecting a capture device. Xbox Support provides model-specific TV connection guidance.
- An external USB HDMI capture card with an HDMI input and software that supports your laptop’s operating system and USB connection.
- An HDMI cable between the Xbox 360 and the capture card. Check the selected card’s box contents first; Elgato states that an HDMI cable is included with the HD60 S.
- The capture card’s USB cable and compatible capture software.
A basic HDMI-to-USB cable or an HDMI splitter is not a substitute unless the product is actually a capture device with the required HDMI input and compatible software. The signal direction matters: the console’s HDMI output goes into the card’s HDMI input, while USB carries the captured video to the laptop.

Connect the Xbox 360 to the laptop
- Connect an HDMI cable from the Xbox 360’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI In.
- Connect the capture card to the laptop using its USB cable.
- Install and open the capture card’s supported software. Select the capture card as the video source.
- Turn on the Xbox 360. Its picture should appear in the capture software if the console, card, software, and laptop are compatible.
Elgato’s instructions for the HD60 S describe the same console-to-card HDMI connection and direct users to its capture software.
Optional: play on a TV or monitor through passthrough
If the capture card has an HDMI output, connect that HDMI Out to a separate TV or monitor. This passthrough display is optional: the capture card can send video to the laptop without a TV connected.

If the capture software shows the Xbox picture but the passthrough TV does not, check the TV’s supported resolutions and set the Xbox 360 output to one the TV accepts. Elgato notes that a TV limited to 720p or 1080i may not show an initial 1080p signal.
HDCP: what the capture card can receive
Elgato says its Game Capture HD can receive unprotected HDMI signals such as Xbox 360 output, but cannot display HDMI signals protected by HDCP. That supports capturing Xbox 360 gameplay in the documented setup; it does not mean protected media content can be captured. See Elgato’s HDMI source and HDCP guidance.

If the laptop does not show the Xbox picture
- No picture in the capture software: confirm the Xbox is connected to the card’s HDMI In—not HDMI Out—and that the capture card is selected as the source.
- The capture card is not detected: check its USB connection and confirm that its software supports the laptop’s operating system and USB interface.
- No HDMI port on the console: check the Xbox 360 revision and available outputs before choosing a capture device; the HDMI procedure above requires HDMI output.
- Picture in software, but not on the passthrough display: check the display’s supported resolution and adjust the Xbox output as needed.
