To connect Alexa to Wi-Fi, connect the Echo or other Alexa-enabled device—not the voice assistant by itself. For a new standard Echo, open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo, then follow the on-screen prompts. To change Wi-Fi on an Echo without a screen that is already set up, use Devices > select your device > Device Settings > Change or remove a Wi-Fi network. Echo models with screens use their on-device Wi-Fi settings.
Before you start
Have the Echo and its power adapter, a phone or internet-ready mobile device with the Alexa app, an Amazon account, and your Wi-Fi network name and password. Amazon lists these prerequisites for the Echo Spot (2024 release); requirements and steps can vary by model. Install or update the Alexa app before setup. Amazon’s Echo setup help links to model-specific instructions.
Set up a new Echo
- Plug in the Echo and wait for it to start.
- Open the Alexa app and choose Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo.
- Select the family that matches your device and follow the app prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi and complete registration. Amazon’s general setup page covers Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, and Echo Dot Kids; other models may have separate instructions.
Some models offer an additional setup route. For the Echo Spot (2024 release), scan the QR code shown on its screen to start guided setup, or use Add Device in the app to set it up manually. Follow the prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and install any software update. See Amazon’s Echo Spot setup instructions.
Change Wi-Fi on an Echo that is already set up
Echo without a screen
- In the Alexa app, open Devices and select the Echo.
- Open Device Settings > Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
- Choose a previously connected network or select Join another Wi-Fi Network, then follow the prompts.
Echo with a screen
Use the Wi-Fi settings instructions on the Echo itself; the app path above is for devices without screens. On the Echo Spot (2024 release), Amazon’s instructions describe selecting the Wi-Fi Off icon on the screen, scanning the QR code, and opening the resulting link to start Wi-Fi settings in the app. Amazon’s Wi-Fi settings guide has model-specific details.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Check whether your Wi-Fi network is compatible
Amazon says Echo devices connect to common home Wi-Fi networks on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz using 802.11a/b/g/n. That general guidance is not a guarantee for every router configuration or Echo model. Amazon also states: “Echo devices can’t connect to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) networks.” See Amazon’s Wi-Fi settings help.
Troubleshoot a failed Wi-Fi connection
Work through these checks in order. Menu names and reset steps can differ by model, so use the corresponding Echo instructions if your screen does not match.

1. Find out whether the internet is working
Try another device on the same Wi-Fi network. If it cannot connect either, the issue may be with the network or internet provider rather than the Echo. If other devices work, continue with the Echo-specific checks. Amazon’s Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
2. Improve signal and reduce interference
Amazon advises keeping the Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router. Move it away from potential sources of interference, including microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics. If needed, temporarily reduce the number of devices connected to the network.

3. Recheck the password and network band
Enter the Wi-Fi password again carefully. If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try connecting the Echo to the other band.
4. Restart the Echo
Unplug the Echo, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Once it restarts, try the Wi-Fi setup or network change again. Amazon’s setup troubleshooting page gives this restart procedure.

If setup continues to fail, Amazon suggests trying a phone hotspot as another diagnostic and resetting the Echo if earlier checks do not work. Reset steps vary by model; follow the relevant instructions on Amazon’s setup help page instead of relying on a universal button sequence.

Tell a router problem from an Echo problem
- Other devices also have no internet: check or restart the router. If connectivity remains unavailable, contact your internet provider.
- Other devices work, but the Echo does not: revisit the password, placement, interference, and band checks above.
Amazon’s error-code guidance distinguishes a device that connected to a router but has no internet from one that could not connect to the router. That distinction is useful context, but the page concerns Amazon smart-home device error codes and should not be treated as a description of every Echo setup screen. Read Amazon’s smart-home device error-code help.
