You can connect a Roku player or Streaming Stick to a phone’s mobile hotspot through Roku’s usual wireless setup: turn on the hotspot, select it from Roku’s Wi-Fi list, enter its password, and connect. Streaming and updates use your mobile data, so check your plan before you start.
Connect Roku to a phone hotspot during setup

Turn on the personal or mobile hotspot in your phone’s settings. The exact menu path varies by phone; Roku’s instructions do not specify phone-specific steps.

On the Roku setup screen, choose Wireless to view available Wi-Fi networks.

Select your hotspot’s network name. If it is not listed, choose Scan again.

Enter the hotspot password carefully. Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive.

Select Connect and follow the prompts on screen to finish setup.

These are the steps in Roku’s internet connection instructions. A phone hotspot is a Wi-Fi connection for the Roku; it is not a special Roku accessory.
Switch an already-set-up Roku to the hotspot
On the Roku, open Home > Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless. Choose the hotspot from the network list, enter its password, and connect. If the name does not appear, select Scan again.

If Roku cannot find or join the hotspot

Check that the hotspot is turned on, then scan again from Roku.

Confirm you selected the correct network name and re-enter the password, checking capitalization.

If connection still fails, note your phone model, operating-system version, and any Roku error message before looking for device-specific settings. Hotspot band, security, and carrier compatibility requirements are not established as universal, so avoid changing settings based on a one-size-fits-all instruction.

For a persistent wireless problem, Roku also recommends trying another Wi-Fi network, such as a phone hotspot, as a diagnostic. If Roku connects to that alternate network, it helps narrow the issue to the original network; it does not by itself identify the cause. What hotspot use means for mobile data
Roku needs an internet connection to stream shows and movies and to receive updates. Roku warns that hotspots use mobile data and that streaming or updates can use a lot. Check your carrier’s data limits before connecting; Roku does not provide a universal per-hour data estimate in its guidance.
If your allowance is limited, consider waiting to stream or update until the Roku is on Wi-Fi with a suitable data allowance. Roku also supports wireless Wi-Fi generally and, on some players, wired Ethernet; some players can use Ethernet with a USB adapter. Ethernet support varies by model and is separate from using a phone hotspot. The connection options are described in Roku’s internet guide.
Roku phone app control is a separate connection
A phone can provide internet to Roku through its hotspot, but that does not guarantee the Roku mobile app will discover or control the device in this setup. Roku says the phone and Roku need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for the app to connect. Its app guidance also identifies iOS Local Network permission and VPNs as possible discovery factors. The hotspot setup and the app’s local-network discovery are distinct: getting Roku online does not establish that app control will work.
