Use a commission calculator to estimate what you keep from a sale—but treat the result as a comparison, not a promised payout. The total depends on your country, product type, payment route, store or ecommerce plan, currency, and the fee terms in effect on the transaction date.
What the calculator should show
Enter the same sale assumptions for each option you want to compare. The calculator should report both the estimated total fees and the net proceeds, with deductions separated by type rather than rolled into one unexplained percentage.
- Commission: the marketplace’s share of a sale, where the applicable terms charge one.
- Payment processing: the charge for handling a payment. It may be a percentage, a fixed amount per transaction, or both.
- Platform transaction fee: an ecommerce platform charge that may apply in addition to payment processing.
- Plan cost: a recurring subscription or other fixed cost. Include it separately when comparing total costs over a period.
A lower commission or processing percentage does not automatically mean a cheaper option: fixed per-sale charges, platform fees, and recurring plan costs can change the total.

- Country or region and currency.
- App marketplace or webshop platform, plus the relevant developer program or ecommerce plan.
- Transaction type, such as a paid app, digital in-app purchase, or physical-goods webshop order.
- Payment route, such as store billing, alternative in-app billing, web checkout, or another payment provider.
- Sale amount and expected transaction count.
- Any fixed per-transaction charge, currency-conversion cost, platform transaction fee, or recurring plan cost that applies.
- The fee schedule’s effective date or version.
For a fair comparison, keep geography, product type, sale amount, transaction volume, currency, and payment method the same across options. Change only the store, plan, or payment route you are evaluating.
Why app-store commission is not one universal rate
App-store fees depend on the market, program eligibility, transaction category, and billing route. Commission and payment processing are separate: a store may charge one, both, or different charges for different purchase paths.

Apple in the European Union
Apple’s documented EU business terms describe several possible charges rather than one rate that applies to every app or purchase. The fee schedule lists a 17% commission for specified iOS and iPadOS transactions, with a 10% rate for certain programs or qualifying subscriptions. It also lists a 3% payment-processing fee when Apple processes the payment, and describes a Core Technology Fee in defined circumstances. These figures describe the terms on that page; they are not a universal Apple schedule.
Apple’s EU payment-options documentation explains that alternative payment processing or linking out means Apple’s payment-processing fee does not apply, while an alternative-payment commission may still apply. The route therefore changes which fees need to be modeled.

Apple announced revised EU business terms in 2026, including replacing the Core Technology Fee with a Core Technology Commission and revising commissions. Because the operative details and applicability must be checked against the current developer terms, select the effective date and applicable terms in the calculator rather than treating the rates above as automatically current for every EU transaction.
Google Play
Google Play says service fees can apply to covered paid-app purchases and digital purchases made through Google Play Billing or qualifying alternative billing. Rates and rollout details vary by market and program. Check the current Google Play Console service-fee terms for the specific developer account and transaction; do not apply one percentage to every developer.

Webshop costs include more than card processing
A webshop comparison should separate the payment processor’s charge from any transaction fee imposed by the ecommerce platform. Shopify’s US pricing page lists plan-dependent online card rates as well as third-party transaction fees. Its Help Center notes that some orders processed through Shopify Payments are excluded from those third-party fees. Rates and features vary by country, so use the localized pricing and applicable help documentation for the market in which the store operates.

For example, Stripe’s US pricing page lists a domestic-card rate and additional charges for manually entered cards, international cards, and currency conversion. These are US terms, not a global price list; check the relevant local pricing page and the payment method you expect customers to use.

How to read the result
- Check the assumptions. Confirm the country, currency, transaction category, sale amount, transaction count, payment route, plan, and effective fee schedule.
- Inspect each fee line. Make sure the result distinguishes commission, payment processing, platform transaction fees, and recurring plan costs.
- Compare net proceeds. Compare the estimated amount left after fees for the same transaction and volume assumptions—not just the headline percentage.
- Verify the terms. Review the current official developer, platform, and processor terms for eligibility, custom pricing, tax treatment, refunds, and other conditions that could change the calculation.
The result is an estimate, not a payout guarantee. Taxes, refunds, custom pricing, eligibility rules, currency conversion, and changes to contractual terms may affect the actual amount received. App-store and payment-provider terms can change; date and market should accompany any fee figures used in a live comparison.
