Computex 2024 put three different PC-platform stories in the spotlight: Intel detailed Lunar Lake for thin-and-light x86 laptops, Qualcomm positioned Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus as the foundation for the first Copilot+ PCs, and AMD announced Zen 5 products for laptops, desktops and servers. Their headline AI and efficiency numbers came from the companies themselves, not a neutral head-to-head test, so they are best read as announcements rather than a buying verdict.

What Intel announced at Computex 2024

At his June 4, 2024 keynote, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger revealed Lunar Lake, a mobile design aimed at thin-and-light AI PCs. Intel said the processor was redesigned with new performance and efficiency cores, an NPU up to four times faster than the prior generation, and Xe2 graphics with a claimed 1.5-times improvement over the previous generation.

Intel also claimed up to 40% lower system-on-chip power than the previous generation. That is an Intel comparison, not a guarantee that every finished Lunar Lake laptop would use 40% less power in everyday use; results depend on the complete device and workload. Intel projected more than 80 AI-PC designs from over 20 partners beginning in the third quarter of 2024.

What Qualcomm announced about Snapdragon X and Copilot+ PCs

In its June 3 keynote, Qualcomm presented Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus as platforms for the first Copilot+ PCs. It named Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and Samsung among its ecosystem partners. Qualcomm said the initial wave would include more than 20 PCs, with preorders and purchases through major retailers beginning June 18, 2024.

Qualcomm also published performance comparisons for Snapdragon X. It claimed up to 2.6 times the NPU performance per watt of Apple M3 and up to 5.4 times that of Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, along with up to 51% faster CPU performance at the same power in its stated Geekbench test. These are Qualcomm’s results under its disclosed test conditions and comparison systems; they should not be read as universal rankings across all laptops or workloads.

What AMD announced about Zen 5

AMD’s June 2 announcement spanned several markets. It introduced Ryzen AI 300 mobile processors, announced the Ryzen 9000 desktop family, including Ryzen 9 9950X, and previewed 5th Gen EPYC server processors, code-named Turin. All were presented as part of AMD’s Zen 5 architecture family.

AMD said Ryzen AI 300’s XDNA 2 NPU delivers 50 TOPS and up to twice the projected power efficiency for generative-AI workloads compared with the prior generation. The efficiency figure is a company projection, not an independent measurement. AMD also showed partner demonstrations involving Microsoft, HP, Lenovo and ASUS. It targeted the second half of 2024 for 5th Gen EPYC availability.

How the three announcements compare

Platform announcement Main scope at Computex AI and graphics claims Ecosystem and timing signal How to interpret it
Intel Lunar Lake Thin-and-light x86 AI PCs Intel claimed up to 40% lower SoC power and an NPU up to 4× faster than the prior generation; Xe2 graphics were claimed to improve 1.5× over the prior generation. More than 80 AI-PC designs from over 20 partners were projected to begin in Q3 2024. These are Intel’s generational claims and plans. Finished laptop results depend on the specific system.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus Windows-on-Arm Copilot+ PCs Qualcomm claimed up to 2.6× NPU performance per watt versus Apple M3 and up to 5.4× versus Intel Core Ultra 7 155H in its tests; it also claimed up to 51% faster CPU performance at the same power in its stated Geekbench test. Qualcomm described more than 20 initial Copilot+ PCs, with major-retailer availability beginning June 18, 2024, and named seven OEM ecosystem participants. The numerical comparisons are Qualcomm’s test results, not a neutral cross-platform ranking. Device and application fit still matter.
AMD Zen 5: Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen 9000 and 5th Gen EPYC Mobile AI PCs, desktop CPUs and server processors AMD said the Ryzen AI 300 XDNA 2 NPU delivers 50 TOPS and up to 2× projected generative-AI workload power efficiency versus the prior generation. AMD announced Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 9000, previewed 5th Gen EPYC, and showed partner demonstrations with Microsoft, HP, Lenovo and ASUS. The 2× efficiency figure is a projection from AMD. The product families address different device categories and should not be treated as one laptop-versus-laptop comparison.

What the comparisons do—and do not—tell you

The claims use different baselines and measures: Intel compared Lunar Lake with its own prior generation, AMD paired an NPU throughput figure with a projected generational efficiency gain, and Qualcomm published comparisons against named competing processors under its own test conditions. TOPS, performance per watt, SoC power and CPU performance are not interchangeable measures. None of these announcements alone establishes which complete PC will be fastest, last longest on battery, or suit a particular workload.

There was no independent cross-platform benchmark in the available event material. Treat the figures as vendor claims and projections, not as results from a common test. A fair comparison requires the same workloads, comparable finished systems and clearly stated conditions.

Which Computex 2024 CPU should you buy?

Computex announcements are not enough to pick a processor in isolation. The relevant choice depends on the specific laptop or desktop configuration, the programs and peripherals you use, the performance you need, and the price and availability of the exact model in your region. The announcements establish intended product roles and vendor claims; they do not establish current local prices, inventory or the behavior of every final SKU.

  • For an upcoming or available thin-and-light x86 laptop: compare the exact Lunar Lake system’s battery and performance information with the alternatives you are considering. Intel’s projected design count does not identify every finished model or its specifications.
  • For a Copilot+ PC: compare the Snapdragon X laptop as a complete device, and verify compatibility for essential apps, accessories and workflows rather than assuming that every Windows program behaves identically on Windows-on-Arm.
  • For a desktop upgrade: Ryzen 9000 is the desktop family in AMD’s announcement; laptop-focused Ryzen AI 300 and server-focused EPYC are not direct substitutes.
  • For a CPU comparison: prioritize independent tests of the exact systems and workloads you care about. Do not choose from headline TOPS or vendor efficiency claims alone.
