If a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC will not start after an update, open Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. If the timing points to a recent update, use Uninstall Updates from the same menu. Keep the BitLocker recovery key available, and save Reset or reinstall options for later because they can affect your files.
First, identify where startup stops
Before changing settings, note what appears on screen: no power, the manufacturer logo, Windows loading, an error or blue screen, WinRE, or a BitLocker recovery prompt. Write down any stop code or update identifier shown. These clues help distinguish a startup problem from a power or hardware problem, but they do not by themselves prove that an update caused the failure.
The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though menu names and available options can vary by version and device. Microsoft’s recovery guidance was checked on October 7, 2026. For a work or school PC, contact your organization’s IT team before removing updates or changing recovery settings.

Open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is Windows’ built-in set of tools for diagnosing and repairing common startup problems. It may appear automatically after Windows fails to start correctly multiple times. If it does not, follow Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance or use recovery media to reach the available recovery tools.

If the device is encrypted with BitLocker, WinRE may ask for the recovery key before allowing Startup Repair or other recovery actions. Find the key before proceeding; without it, you may not be able to use those options.
Try Startup Repair first
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested, and follow the prompts. The PC may restart during the process.
- If Windows still will not start, check whether Startup Repair reports issues found, then continue to the next recovery option.
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a built-in tool for problems that prevent Windows from starting. It scans for common issues—including damaged system files, boot configuration problems, incompatible drivers, and registry errors—and attempts repairs. It cannot fix every cause. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.
Uninstall the recent update if the timing fits
If the startup problem began after a specific Windows update, try removing the applicable latest update from WinRE:
Recommended Free Tools
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the available option for the latest quality update or latest feature update that matches the suspected update, then follow the prompts.
Microsoft says removing an update does not affect personal files and apps, but some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update can leave the PC exposed to issues that update addressed, so use this option thoughtfully and restore protection through supported updates when the PC is working again. Microsoft’s Uninstall Updates guidance explains the process. Its recovery options guide notes that uninstalling a recent update might help if the problem began after one.

Use Safe Mode to narrow down the problem
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- When the Startup Settings choices appear, select the Safe Mode option and let Windows start.
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of services and drivers. If the problem does not recur there, default settings, basic device drivers, and services are less likely to be responsible. That is a diagnostic clue, not proof that the update caused the failure. See Microsoft’s Startup Settings guidance.

If Startup Repair, update removal, and Safe Mode do not resolve the problem, review the remaining choices in WinRE. Their availability varies by device and Windows version, and their effects on data are different.
| Option | When it may fit | Data effect or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | Windows will not start or remains stuck loading | Attempts automatic repairs; an encrypted device may require the BitLocker key. |
| Uninstall Updates | The failure began after a recent update | Personal files and apps are kept, but some updates cannot be removed; removing a security update has risks. |
| Safe Mode | You can reach Startup Settings and want to isolate a driver or service issue | Starts with limited services and drivers; a symptom-free session narrows but does not prove the cause. |
| System Restore or Reset this PC | Earlier recovery attempts failed and the option is available | Effects differ by action. Reset lets you choose whether to keep personal files or remove everything; review the selected option and back up first. |
| Reinstall Windows from installation media | Other recovery routes failed | Microsoft says this removes everything. Where appropriate, Microsoft recommends OEM recovery media for hardware compatibility. |
Before using Reset, System Restore, or installation media, read the prompts carefully and back up data if you can. Microsoft’s recovery options guide explains how the choices differ. If you need installation media, Microsoft describes creating bootable media on another working PC; a blank USB drive by itself is not bootable recovery media.
Keep Windows 10 support status in mind
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10 after that date. Check whether your edition or an applicable extended-support arrangement changes your update situation. This support status does not identify the cause of a particular startup failure.
