The cheapest quoted rate is not automatically the cheapest service. Compare speech-to-text APIs by processed audio minute, separating batch from streaming, then add channel multiplication, premium features, retries, storage, egress, and compliance overhead. On the figures available for 2026, Google Cloud Speech-to-Text V2 standard recognition is listed at $0.016 per minute for the first 500,000 monthly minutes and reaches $0.004 per minute above 2,000,000 minutes. A July 2026 comparison lists approximately $0.0035 per minute for AssemblyAI Universal-3.5 Pro batch, $0.0075 for its streaming mode, $0.0043 for Deepgram Nova-3 batch, and $0.0077 for its streaming mode. Those converted figures are useful for screening, not a substitute for a provider quote and regional contract review.

Define the workload before comparing prices

A per-minute quote is meaningful only after you describe what will be processed. Create a one-page workload profile with these fields:

  • Monthly processed audio: count audio minutes sent to the API, not the number of files or user sessions.
  • Mode: identify what must be transcribed live and what can wait for batch processing.
  • Clip length: short clips can make minimums and request overhead more important than the headline rate.
  • Channels: record whether files are mono, stereo, or multichannel. Some services bill each channel-minute.
  • Languages and variants: list every EU language, accent, code-switching pattern, and specialist vocabulary you need.
  • Peak concurrency: estimate simultaneous live streams, not just monthly volume.
  • Output requirements: diarization, timestamps, punctuation, redaction, summaries, and custom vocabulary may be priced or metered separately.

Keep batch and streaming as separate lines in your financial model. A service can be inexpensive for archived recordings but expensive for real-time calls, or vice versa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Normalize every quote to processed minutes

Convert each vendor’s unit to the same denominator: one minute of audio successfully submitted and processed. Record the billing increment, rounding rule, channel treatment, free allowance, and any feature fees beside the normalized number. Do not compare an hourly streaming figure with a monthly platform fee or a per-request minimum.

The AssemblyAI and Deepgram values in the table are approximate conversions from hourly figures published in AssemblyAI’s July 2026 comparison. They are comparative figures, not guaranteed quotes. Google Cloud’s figures are listed on its 2026 pricing page as volume tiers. Before signing, recalculate with the provider’s current calculator, currency, region, model, and contract discounts.

Read the tiers and units carefully

Google Cloud’s published V2 standard rate is $0.016 per minute through 500,000 monthly minutes, with a listed rate of $0.004 per minute above 2,000,000 minutes. Ask whether intermediate usage is charged progressively by block or whether crossing a threshold changes the rate applied to all usage. The answer can materially change a growth forecast. Preserve the provider’s exact tier language in your spreadsheet and calculate low, expected, and high volume cases.

Hourly figures also need a clear denominator. Dividing $0.21 per hour by 60 gives approximately $0.0035 per minute, but that conversion says nothing about minimum session length, silence handling, channel multiplication, or premium models. Label every converted value as approximate and retain the original hourly quote beside it.

Calculate a realistic monthly bill

Use this model for each mode and provider:

Monthly total = processed minutes × applicable rate × channel multiplier + premium features + storage/compute/egress + retry overhead − eligible free allowance

Apply volume tiers exactly as the provider defines them. A tier may apply progressively to blocks of usage or to all usage after a threshold; never assume one interpretation from a headline table.

Worked screening examples

  • 80,000 batch minutes: at AssemblyAI’s approximate converted batch figure, the transcription component is about $280 before channels, features, infrastructure, or free-tier treatment.
  • 80,000 streaming minutes: at AssemblyAI’s approximate converted streaming figure, the transcription component is about $600 before those additions.
  • 80,000 Google Cloud minutes: if all minutes fall in the first listed tier, the recognition component is $1,280 before related Google Cloud services.
  • 500,000 mixed minutes: split the batch and streaming pools first. Applying one blended average can hide a costly live component and can misapply different free allowances.
  • 2.5 million minutes: calculate at least two interpretations of Google Cloud’s threshold language until the account team confirms whether the $0.004 figure applies only to incremental minutes or to a qualifying volume band.

These examples are deliberately limited to the recognition line item. They are not forecasts of an invoice.

Account for channel multiplication

A 60-minute stereo recording can represent 120 billed channel-minutes when a provider charges each channel separately. The same call stored as a single mixed track may produce a different bill and different speaker-separation quality. Confirm whether the API accepts multichannel audio as one request, whether it processes channels independently, and whether diarization is an alternative to separate-channel billing.

Use free allowances correctly

AssemblyAI’s FAQ says an account can start immediately without a credit card. Its published allowance is up to 185 hours of pre-recorded transcription and 333 hours of streaming transcription. Confirm whether the allowance is promotional, recurring, limited by model or account type, and consumed before or after channel multiplication. Do not subtract it from a forecast until those terms are documented.

Compare providers by use case, not just price

Google Cloud is attractive when a startup already operates inside Google Cloud and can benefit from volume tiers, consolidated billing, and regional controls. The trade-off is a more complex invoice: storage and other Google resources are separate line items, and the selected recognition configuration determines the applicable rate.

AssemblyAI’s published comparison makes its Universal-3.5 Pro batch figure the lowest of the converted examples here and lists EU data residency as available. Its free allowance can reduce pilot cost, but channel-minute multiplication and feature metering still need written confirmation. The streaming figure is more than double its batch figure, so a product with mostly live traffic should not extrapolate from the batch rate.

Deepgram’s Nova-3 figures are close to AssemblyAI’s in both modes. The July 2026 comparison marks its EU-residency status differently, making a regional and contractual check particularly important. Verify whether the endpoint, model, and retention policy you need are available in the same EU location.

AWS Transcribe and Azure AI Speech remain sensible benchmarks when your application already depends on those clouds, but exact EU-region prices were not established here. Request a dated quote for the exact region, model, channel setup, and feature set rather than copying a US list price.

Batch and streaming are different products

Choose batch for completed recordings

Batch transcription is appropriate for meetings, uploaded calls, podcasts, support archives, and other files where seconds of latency do not affect the user experience. It usually allows queue-based scaling and easier retry management. Measure time to completion, not just API response time, and include the cost of storing files while they wait.

Choose streaming for live interaction

Streaming is needed for captions, live agents, voice controls, and workflows that react while someone is speaking. Model concurrent connections, reconnects, partial-result updates, gateway capacity, and the cost of keeping sessions open during silence. A lower per-minute figure is irrelevant if the service cannot meet your peak concurrency or latency target.

Do not mix modes in one average

Build separate rows for live and recorded traffic. If 20% of a product’s minutes are streaming and 80% are batch, calculate each pool independently and add them only after mode-specific rates, free allowances, and feature charges are applied.

EU residency and privacy checks

For an EU startup, location and contractual controls can outweigh a small unit-price difference. “EU available” is not a complete compliance answer; you need the exact service, region, subprocessors, transfer mechanism, and retention behavior.

  • Processing location: ask where audio is ingested, where temporary files and transcripts are stored, and whether support or abuse-review access leaves the EU.
  • GDPR paperwork: obtain the data-processing agreement, subprocessor list, security measures, and transfer documentation.
  • Retention: identify default retention for audio, interim results, transcripts, logs, and backups. Confirm deletion timing after an API request or account closure.
  • Model training: require a clear statement on whether customer audio or transcripts are used to train models, and whether an opt-out is contractual or merely a dashboard setting.
  • Data minimization: send only the channels and metadata required. Redact or tokenize personal data before upload when your risk assessment calls for it.
  • Incident and support geography: check notification deadlines, support access, and the locations from which operators can view diagnostic data.

The July 2026 comparison shows EU-residency differences among Google Cloud, AssemblyAI, and Deepgram. Treat that table as a starting point: verify the specific region and product in current terms before procurement.

Hidden costs that change the ranking

Cloud storage and transfer

Google states that storing recognition audio in Cloud Storage or using other Google Cloud resources with Speech-to-Text creates separate charges. The same budgeting principle applies elsewhere: include object-storage requests, at-rest storage, inter-region transfer, public egress, and CDN or gateway traffic where applicable.

Retries and failed jobs

Network failures, malformed media, expired URLs, and application retries can create additional processed minutes. Track an operational retry rate from logs and add a conservative allowance rather than assuming every request succeeds once. Use idempotency keys or durable job IDs where supported so a client timeout does not launch duplicate work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Feature metering

Diarization, word-level timestamps, redaction, language identification, custom vocabulary, punctuation, summarization, and translation may be separate models or add-ons. Obtain a line-item price for every feature your product requires; “included” must be written into the quote.

Application infrastructure

Budget queues, webhook handlers, stream relays, autoscaling workers, observability, encryption-key management, and data warehouses. For streaming, include idle connection time and reconnect traffic. For batch, include polling or callback infrastructure and file lifecycle jobs.

Commercial terms

Check currency conversion, taxes, minimum commitments, volume discounts, overage rates, quota increases, support plans, and notice periods. A discounted rate that requires a large commitment can cost more than on-demand pricing during an uncertain launch. For an EU invoice, model VAT treatment and whether the provider’s billing entity creates reverse-charge obligations.

Operational requirements to put in the quote

Ask each vendor to state maximum file size and duration, accepted codecs and sample rates, rate limits, simultaneous stream quotas, regional failover behavior, webhook retry policy, status-page commitments, and support response times. Confirm whether a quota increase is automatic, paid, or subject to approval. Require a sample invoice showing minutes, channels, models, add-ons, and taxes so finance can reconcile usage.

Define an exit plan before production: export transcript and metadata formats, delete uploaded media, revoke keys, and test migration to a second provider. Keeping a small dual-provider path for critical traffic can reduce outage risk, but price the duplicate storage, monitoring, and engineering effort instead of treating failover as free.

Test quality and latency on your own data

Public word-error-rate claims rarely predict an EU startup’s production result. Build a representative, legally usable test set covering each target language, accent, microphone type, background noise, overlap, proper names, and domain terms. Include both clean recordings and the worst conditions you expect to support.

  1. Prepare identical clips for every provider and mode, with a human-reviewed reference transcript.
  2. Measure word and punctuation errors, named-entity accuracy, diarization mistakes, timestamps, language switching, and redaction failures.
  3. For streaming, record first partial result, stable-final result, end-of-utterance delay, reconnect behavior, and observed concurrent-session limits.
  4. Record billed minutes, rounding, retries, feature flags, and infrastructure usage during the test.
  5. Repeat the test after model or pricing changes; quality and terms can change independently.

No comparative quality benchmark is established by the figures above, so select a provider only after your own evaluation and a privacy review.

A procurement process that avoids expensive surprises

  1. Document demand: freeze a monthly range, batch/streaming split, channels, languages, peak concurrency, and feature list.
  2. Request comparable quotes: ask every provider to price the same minutes, channels, modes, region, retention period, and add-ons.
  3. Normalize units: convert hourly, per-second, per-request, and subscription components to processed minutes; preserve each rounding and minimum rule.
  4. Build a total-cost model: add storage, egress, compute, queues, monitoring, retries, support, taxes, and commitment risk.
  5. Run the quality test: use your representative recordings and measure both accuracy and latency.
  6. Complete compliance review: approve the DPA, residency, subprocessors, deletion process, retention defaults, and training-use restrictions.
  7. Validate operations: test quotas, rate limits, concurrency, failover, webhook delivery, idempotency, and cancellation.
  8. Recheck immediately before signing: pricing pages, free programs, quotas, model names, regional availability, and contract language are volatile.

For a small pilot, choose the option with the lowest verified total cost for your actual workload and acceptable compliance posture. At scale, volume tiers may make a higher entry price economical, while a nominally cheap service can lose its advantage through channel billing, feature fees, or cloud overhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which speech-to-text API is cheapest per minute in 2026?

There is no universal winner. The cited July 2026 comparison converts AssemblyAI Universal-3.5 Pro to approximately $0.0035 per batch minute and $0.0075 per streaming minute, while Deepgram Nova-3 is approximately $0.0043 and $0.0077. Google Cloud lists $0.016 per minute through 500,000 monthly minutes and $0.004 above 2,000,000 minutes. Your actual total depends on tiers, channels, features, retries, and cloud services.

Is batch transcription cheaper than streaming?

Usually in the published examples: AssemblyAI is approximately $0.21 per hour batch versus $0.45 streaming, and Deepgram is approximately $0.26 versus $0.46. Streaming also introduces connection, gateway, reconnect, and concurrency costs. Confirm the provider’s current mode-specific terms rather than averaging the two rates.

How should I budget a stereo or multichannel recording?

Check whether billing multiplies audio duration by channel count. AssemblyAI states that multichannel recordings are billed by channel-minute multiplication, so 60 minutes of two-channel audio can become 120 billed minutes. Ask whether diarization, mixed-down audio, or separate channels changes both price and accuracy.

Does EU data residency guarantee GDPR compliance?

No. Confirm the exact ingestion and storage region, subprocessors, transfer mechanisms, retention and deletion behavior, support access, security measures, and model-training restrictions in the data-processing agreement. A regional label alone does not answer those questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What hidden costs should an EU startup include?

Include object storage, requests, egress, queues, stream relays, compute, monitoring, encryption, retries, premium features, taxes, support plans, quota increases, and commitment risk. Google Cloud explicitly notes separate charges for Cloud Storage and other Google Cloud resources used with Speech-to-Text.

Can I rely on AWS or Azure list prices for this comparison?

Use them as benchmark candidates, but obtain current EU-region pricing for the exact model and configuration. Exact AWS Transcribe and Azure AI Speech figures were not established in the cited material, so copying a generic or non-EU rate could produce a misleading forecast.

The Bottom Line

Compare speech-to-text APIs on a normalized, mode-specific total cost. Start with processed minutes, then apply volume tiers, channel multiplication, feature fees, retries, infrastructure, taxes, and compliance requirements. AssemblyAI and Deepgram show competitive approximate rates in the July 2026 comparison, while Google Cloud offers volume tiers that may become attractive at high usage. Verify every price, quota, residency claim, retention term, and free allowance for your exact EU deployment before signing.
