Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is a standalone PC wave-defense game from Relic Entertainment. You can play alone or with a co-op partner, choose from four factions, make temporary tactical choices during a run, and unlock permanent faction upgrades between runs. The game offers a 12-wave campaign structure, an Endless Mode, eight difficulty levels, and five battlegrounds. A three-player mode has been announced for the planned November 5, 2026 update, but it was not listed as available in the official materials dated October 13, 2026.

This guide uses “Final Stand,” the product’s current name. “Last Stand” may refer to the older wave-based mode in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution; that is a different game and should not be confused with this release.

How many players can play together?

The current design supports a solo run or online co-op for two people. Relic’s FAQ phrases this as: “Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is designed for singleplayer or two-player co-op.” That is the live player-count guidance in the October 13 materials, rather than a statement that larger parties are already supported.

Relic has announced a three-player Final Stand mode as part of the Company of Heroes 3 version 3.0 update planned for November 5, 2026. The announcement also says difficulty will scale for the larger party. Because November 5 was still in the future at the research date, treat three-player support as announced, not shipped. If you are reading this after that date, verify the current Steam description and update notes before assuming the feature is enabled.

Joining or hosting a co-op lobby

A July 30 hotfix added a Browse Games lobby list for co-op. According to Relic’s notes, the list lets you inspect open sessions, including their selected map and difficulty, then join a suitable lobby. You can also create a private or public game and set your preferred options. The exact lobby population and labels can change with later patches, but Browse Games is the useful starting point described in the hotfix.

  1. Launch Final Stand from its Steam installation.
  2. Open the co-op lobby browser and use Browse Games to inspect available sessions, maps, and difficulty.
  3. Join an open lobby, or create a private/public lobby with the options you want.
  4. Agree on factions and difficulty before starting, since those choices shape the run’s available tools and pressure.

Do you need Company of Heroes 3?

No. Final Stand is sold as a standalone PC product on Steam. The listing says ownership of an earlier Company of Heroes game is not required. Relic’s FAQ also distinguishes the two purchase situations: existing Company of Heroes 3 owners can access Final Stand without a separate base-game installation, while people who do not own the base game can buy Final Stand as its own product.

Relic’s announcement gave an initial price of $29.99 USD, a 20% discount for existing Company of Heroes 3 owners, and a 20% launch-period discount. Those figures were announcement-time terms, not a permanent price promise. Store prices are regional and may change, and the launch discount may have expired. Use the local Steam listing for the amount and eligibility that apply to you.

Which factions are in Final Stand?

Four factions are playable:

  • US Forces
  • Wehrmacht
  • British Forces
  • Deutsches Afrikakorps

Relic’s listing says every faction has its own progression tree. That means the long-term unlock path is tied to the faction you select, rather than being one universal account-wide tree. The cited material does not establish a competitive ranking, a universally strongest faction, or a balance-based tier list, so faction choice should be treated as a preference about available tools and progression rather than an officially proven “best” pick.

How to choose a starting faction

  • Choose for learning: Pick the faction whose units and abilities you already recognize from Company of Heroes, if you have prior experience.
  • Choose for variety: Start with a faction whose progression tree offers the types of abilities you want to experiment with.
  • Choose for a group: In co-op, coordinate different faction choices so the team can test complementary options instead of duplicating the same play style.

Those are practical selection principles, not claims that one faction has superior balance. Relic’s published information does not provide enough evidence for a faction ranking.

How does progression work?

Final Stand uses two separate progression layers. Understanding which layer a choice belongs to prevents a common mistake: assuming every upgrade carries into the next attempt.

Temporary choices during a run

At the end of each wave, you build or adjust your battlegroup by choosing from randomized units or abilities. The selected options remain available for the duration of that run. They are therefore tactical decisions for the current attempt: a choice can help you survive the next sequence of attacks without becoming a permanent account unlock.

  • ACCLAIMED TACTICAL GAMEPLAY IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER - Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents
  • NEW WAYS TO PLAY OFFER PLAYERS MORE OPTIONS THAN EVER BEFORE - Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice
  • CINEMATIC MILITARY ACTION PUSHES BOTH GAMEPLAY & VISUALS TO NEW HEIGHTS - Explore untold stories from the intense conflict in North Africa and the Italian peninsula, such as those of the Italian partisans

The random element means two runs with the same faction can offer different combinations. Plan around what appears rather than expecting a fixed shop or identical upgrade order. If a choice solves an immediate weakness, its value may be higher than a theoretically stronger option that does not address the next wave’s pressure.

Persistent unlocks between runs

Between runs, you unlock permanent perks and unique abilities through the selected faction’s progression tree. These unlocks form the longer-term advancement layer. They remain part of that faction’s available progression when you start another run, unlike the randomized wave rewards that disappear when the run ends.

The practical loop is therefore: enter with the faction’s accumulated unlocks, make temporary selections as each wave ends, attempt to defeat the escalating sequence, and use future runs to expand the faction tree. The official description establishes this temporary-versus-persistent structure but does not publish a complete unlock list or a required order for the trees.

What happens in a run?

Twelve escalating waves

Relic describes the main format as 12 increasingly difficult rounds. The escalation is the central pacing system: surviving one round gives you a new choice, but the next round raises the pressure. The store description also mentions bosses and dynamic battlefield events, so a run is not simply the same encounter repeated 12 times.

  • Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents.
  • Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
  • Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
  • Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
  • Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.

Bosses and events

The publisher lists 36 boss units and 18 dynamic in-game events. These are advertised content counts for the 2026 product, not independently verified totals of every possible encounter in every run. Bosses provide major threat spikes, while dynamic events can change the conditions of a battlefield during the attempt.

Endless Mode

Endless Mode is the alternative to the fixed escalating-wave structure. The supplied official description identifies it as an additional challenge but does not specify a maximum wave count, scoring formula, or leaderboard rules. Do not assume that Endless uses the same endpoint or rewards as the 12-wave format unless a current update explains those systems.

Battlegrounds and difficulty

Five battlegrounds and eight difficulty levels are listed by Relic. Difficulty selection gives you a way to tune pressure before launching a run; it is separate from the later announcement that three-player co-op will use difficulty scaling. The available maps, modifiers, and tuning can be revised in patches, so treat the in-game selection screen as authoritative for a current session.

How the temporary and permanent systems fit together

The two-layer model creates three decisions at different times:

Best Value
Company of Heroes 3 Launch Edition (Metal Case) (Xbox Series X)
  • Take command in real-time battles and lead a campaign as a general where every decision counts
  • The impressive graphics ensure authentic and highly varied environments in which you always have to be on your guard
  • New strategic levels: experience the biggest single-player campaign in the history of the franchise
  • Includes Limited Edition Packaging, Metal Case, Embroidered Devil's Brigade Patch, Double Sided Map, Collector's Book + "Devil's Brigade DLC" Pack
  1. Before the run: Select a faction and use its existing progression-tree unlocks to define what tools are available.
  2. After each wave: Choose from randomized units or abilities, accepting that these choices last only for the active run.
  3. After the run: Return to the faction tree and invest in persistent perks or unique abilities for later attempts.

This structure rewards adaptation rather than a single memorized build. A permanent unlock can broaden your options, while a temporary wave choice determines whether your current battlegroup can handle the next threat. Keep those time horizons separate when evaluating a disappointing run: losing a run does not erase the faction-tree progress, but it does end the temporary build assembled inside that attempt.

Is Final Stand the same as the older “Last Stand” mode?

No. The current product is named Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand. Relic’s announcement deliberately connects that name to earlier wave-based experiences, including Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution: The Last Stand, which is why searches for “Company of Heroes 3 Last Stand” can produce mixed results. Use “Final Stand” when looking for the current Steam product, its updates, or its co-op information.

What is announced for post-launch support?

The concrete post-launch feature identified in the official materials is the planned version 3.0 update on November 5, 2026. It is announced to add three-player Final Stand and difficulty scaling for that party size. The available FAQ does not establish a complete DLC roadmap, a release schedule beyond that update, or a permanent promise of additional factions and battlegrounds. Separate confirmed information from speculation, and check Relic’s current announcements if you need an up-to-date content schedule.

Who is Final Stand for?

  • Solo players: The game supports a complete single-player format, so a second person is not required.
  • Pairs: The currently listed co-op design is built for two players, with lobby browsing and private/public hosting options.
  • Players without the base game: The standalone product removes the need to purchase another Company of Heroes title first.
  • Players who enjoy repeatable runs: Randomized wave choices, persistent faction trees, multiple difficulty levels, and Endless Mode all support repeated attempts.
  • Players waiting for larger groups: Three-player support is announced for November 5, 2026, but its live status should be checked against the current version.

Final Stand is a clear fit if you want a self-contained wave-defense experience with faction-specific progression and either solo play or small-group co-op. The most important buying check is not ownership of the base game; it is whether the current player cap, price, and announced update timing match the way you plan to play.
