Government air quality stations are the source to use for official Air Quality Index (AQI) and standards-related reporting. Community air monitors can add more localized, frequent observations, but their readings are supplemental: device performance varies, and raw measurements may need quality checks or correction before comparison. For current AQI and health information, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends AirNow.
What is the difference between a government station and a community monitor?
They answer related but different questions. Government stations operate within formal monitoring programs and quality procedures; their measurements support official air-quality reporting. Community monitors can extend observations into more neighborhoods and provide useful clues about local variation or changes over time. They are not automatically equivalent to regulatory monitors.
| What you are comparing | Government air quality station | Community air monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Regulatory-grade monitoring and official AQI or standards-related reporting. | Local screening, education, community science, and supplemental observations. |
| Where readings come from | Often a smaller number of fixed monitoring locations. | Networks may include numerous devices closer to neighborhood-scale sources. |
| Time detail | Depends on the pollutant, network, and reporting product. | Often provides frequent short-term readings; the interval depends on the device and service. |
| Data quality | Collected under formal monitoring requirements and quality procedures. | Varies by device and conditions; data may need collocation, calibration, correction, or quality control. |
| Best interpretation | Use for official AQI and health information. | Use to explore patterns and relative changes, with uncertainty in mind. |
| Pollutants measured | Varies by station and network. | Varies by device; check the specific sensor’s capabilities. |
This is a broad comparison, not a guarantee that every station or monitor has identical capabilities. EPA describes the variability and limitations of sensor data in its Frequent Questions About Air Sensors and explains how it evaluates sensors alongside regulation-grade monitors in Evaluation of Emerging Air Sensor Performance.

A neighborhood monitor is most useful as an additional observation: it can help you notice a change near a particular place, compare patterns across locations, or identify questions worth investigating. A sensor reading alone does not establish why pollution changed or whether a regulatory threshold was exceeded.

More locations can reveal local patterns
In its Phoenix Testbed for Air Quality Sensors project, EPA and Maricopa County deployed PurpleAir PM2.5 sensors across the city. EPA reports that the denser network helped researchers explore spatial concentration patterns, observe changes during the day, and provide supporting information for identifying exceptional events. Regulatory-grade measurements were also used to validate calibration methods. The project is an example of what a sensor network can contribute, not proof that every monitor network will perform the same way. See EPA’s Phoenix project account.
Readings are limited to what the device measures
For example, EPA identifies the PurpleAir PA-II-SD as a fine particulate matter (PM2.5) sensor. Its reading should not be treated as a measurement of pollutants it does not measure, or as an official PM10 reading or AQI result. Check the monitor’s stated capabilities before interpreting its data. EPA discusses sensor-loan equipment and its uses on Air Sensor Loan Programs.

Why might a sensor reading differ from AirNow?
A difference does not, by itself, show that either reading is wrong. The devices may measure different pollutants or time intervals, be in different locations, or process measurements differently. Sensor readings can also be affected by the device and its surroundings.
Check that the measurements are comparable
- Pollutant: Confirm both readings refer to the same pollutant, rather than assuming a PM2.5 sensor measures other pollutants.
- Averaging period: Check whether one value is a short-term reading and the other summarizes a longer period.
- Location: A monitor near a road, building, or other local source may observe conditions unlike those at a fixed station elsewhere.
- Processing: Find out whether either number has been quality-checked, corrected, or calibrated.
- Conditions and placement: Temperature, humidity, exposure to weather, and installation can affect sensor performance.
EPA says sensor limitations can include questionable data points, systematic over- or under-estimation, insufficient selectivity or sensitivity, weather-related effects, calibration needs, and lack of weatherproofing. Its Understanding Air Sensor Data page also illustrates why processing matters: for selected PurpleAir data displayed on its Fire and Smoke Map, EPA applies quality-control checks and an extended U.S.-wide correction equation because uncorrected sensor data are not comparable to regulatory-grade data.

Which reading should you rely on?
For official AQI and health framing, use AirNow. EPA states: “EPA recommends that you use AirNow for information on air quality and health.” A community monitor can still be useful as a local clue—especially for noticing changes or exploring possible neighborhood patterns—but do not treat its raw number as interchangeable with an official reading. EPA addresses the difference directly in What Do My Sensor Readings Mean?
Do not use an unvalidated low-cost sensor reading by itself as proof of a regulatory exceedance or as a direct measure of an individual’s health risk. EPA notes that data from its sensor loan programs are not intended for comparison with federal ambient air quality standards.

How to use both sources in practice
- Start with the official AQI. Check AirNow for current air-quality and health information.
- Use a community monitor to add local context. Look for changes over time or differences between nearby locations; treat them as observations to investigate, not official determinations.
- Before comparing numbers, align the basics. Verify pollutant, averaging period, location, and any correction or quality-control processing.
- Investigate surprising values cautiously. Consider sensor placement, temperature, humidity, weather exposure, calibration, and the possibility of a questionable data point before drawing a conclusion.
