Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu has urged Indians in the United States to return and help build India’s technology sector. The appeal, reported by Moneycontrol on October 9, 2026, came amid news coverage of a US Department of Labor action involving employers’ PERM processing—not a reported cancellation of H-1B visas.
What Vembu said
Moneycontrol reported on October 9, 2026, that Vembu posted: “Indians have made a major contribution to America’s technological prowess. Yet, a big part of America no longer wants us,” followed by, “Let this be the birth pains of a bold new future. Come back, let’s build India.” The platform and wording are as reported by Moneycontrol; the original post was not independently verified for this account.
His message is an appeal, not a government directive or a requirement for Indians in the US to return. Its central argument is that people who have gained experience abroad could use it to develop technology, businesses, and opportunities for younger professionals in India.

News reports linked Vembu’s appeal to a reported suspension of several companies from PERM processing. Coverage named TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Cognizant, Capgemini, Microsoft, and Adobe. The specific October 2026 government announcement and the exact scope or current status of the action were not independently confirmed in the available reporting, so the company list and action should be understood as secondary-media reports.
#1 Best Overall
PERM and H-1B are separate programs. The US Department of Labor describes PERM as a permanent labor-certification process used in employment-based permanent residency, while H-1B is a temporary employment program. India Today’s report says the PERM action did not automatically cancel H-1B visas or prevent H-1B employment at the named companies. A PERM processing suspension, by itself, should not be described as an H-1B visa ban.
The Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General announced an investigation into alleged fraud and human trafficking involving H-1B and PERM systems on July 8, 2026. That earlier investigation is separate background; the available coverage does not establish that it caused the later employer-specific action.

Vembu has made similar appeals before
The October message followed earlier calls reported by Moneycontrol. In September 2025, Vembu urged Indian H-1B workers in the US to consider returning amid immigration-policy concerns. In April 2026, he addressed Indians who had moved to the US for education or work, arguing that their experience could help India create technology and opportunities for younger professionals. In May 2026, he made another appeal amid reports of green-card process changes, emphasizing self-respect and a future in India.

The debate behind the appeal
The coverage raises a question that goes beyond any one immigration program: what would make experienced professionals choose to build careers and companies in India? A reader quoted by The Times of India asked why Indian talent helped build the US while it “could not do anything here.” The outlet reported Vembu’s reply as a comparison with China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan: he argued that national development can take place alongside outward migration by people seeking better opportunities. That is his reported argument, not proof that migration alone produces development.
Rank #3
Vembu’s appeal rests on the possibility that overseas experience can contribute to India’s technology ecosystem. Whether that possibility translates into a personal decision depends on practical factors such as available roles, compensation, career prospects, education and family needs, living standards, and long-term goals. The broader question—whether India can offer enough opportunities to attract experienced professionals and support globally competitive companies—remains a matter of public debate, not a settled conclusion.

The reports do not establish how many workers or applicants are affected by the PERM action, nor do they determine any individual’s immigration options. Anyone considering a move should assess their own circumstances rather than treat Vembu’s appeal or a general news report as immigration advice.
- Immigration circumstances: Identify your current status, application stage, employer, and the specific process affected. PERM and H-1B are not interchangeable.
- Work and career: Compare realistic roles, compensation, professional growth, and the prospects for your field in each location.
- Family and daily life: Account for family needs, education, location, and living standards.
- Long-term goals: Consider where you want to build a career or business, and what opportunities are actually available to you.
For case-specific immigration questions, consult a qualified employment-based immigration professional; the reported employer action alone does not establish what will happen in an individual case.
