“Colourful metal detection” can mean several different things: a wall scanner that changes display color by scan mode, a hobby detector that uses colored lights to classify targets, or professional equipment that turns survey data into color-coded 3D images. These are different tools for different jobs. Color helps communicate information; by itself, it does not prove what a target is, how deep it lies, or whether it is valuable.
What does “colourful metal detection” mean?
There is no single device category defined by a color display. The useful question is what the color represents and where you plan to search.

These devices are not direct substitutes. A wall scanner is intended to help locate objects in building materials, a hobby detector searches the ground, and a professional system may be used to visualize a survey.

What does the red light mean on a metal detector?
It depends on the model. On the Zircon MetalliScanner m60c, red means AC Scan Mode; on the Minelab GO-FIND 44, red Treasure View LEDs indicate the detector’s trash category. The same color therefore has different meanings on different products.

Zircon MetalliScanner m60c: color shows scan mode
Zircon describes the m60c as a wall scanner for finding metal and live, unshielded AC wiring behind walls, floors, and ceilings. Its ColorTrip display is blue in Metal Scan Mode and red in AC Scan Mode. The colors identify the mode, rather than independently identifying the material in front of the scanner. Zircon’s product sheet and datasheet describe the device and its indicators.
Zircon states that the m60c can locate non-ferrous metal such as copper pipe up to 38 mm deep and ferrous metal such as rebar up to 75 mm deep. Those are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not guaranteed depths for every wall, material, or installation. Its WireWarning feature indicates the presence of live, unshielded AC wiring under the conditions described by Zircon; do not treat a color display as a substitute for safe work practices.

Minelab GO-FIND 44: LEDs show a broad target category
Minelab says the GO-FIND 44 has five Treasure View LEDs: red indicates trash and green indicates treasure. This is visual feedback from a hobby ground-search detector, not proof of a target’s composition, identity, or value. Minelab’s GO-FIND 44 product page also lists a 10-inch coil that is waterproof up to 0.6 m and a lightweight, folding design.

Can a metal detector find wires behind walls?
A ground-search detector and a wall scanner are built for different tasks. For locating metal or live, unshielded AC wiring behind a wall, the Zircon MetalliScanner m60c is the relevant example among the products discussed here. Zircon describes its WireWarning feature for live, unshielded AC wiring and specifies the conditions in its documentation. A red display on this model means AC Scan Mode; it is not, by itself, confirmation that wiring is present.

Follow the scanner’s instructions and use appropriate caution before drilling or cutting. Detection claims depend on the stated target and conditions, and the manufacturer’s documentation—not the color alone—should guide how to interpret an indication.
What do color displays mean on professional scanners?
Professional systems can use color for visualization rather than a simple indicator light. OKM describes color-coded 3D visualization of a search area for its professional ground scanners. Lorenz Detecting Systems notes that additional hardware and software are necessary to generate color, image, surface, or contour maps with its system. This category is aimed at survey-style work and should not be confused with a consumer wall scanner or a hobby detector. How to choose a detector with color indicators
- Start with the job. Choose a wall scanner for building materials, a ground-search detector for hobby searching in soil, or a professional scanning system if you need survey visualization.
- Check what each color means. Read the model’s manual or product documentation. A color may show scan mode, a broad target category, or a visualization layer; it does not have a universal meaning across brands.
- Compare stated capability with your target. Look for the target types and conditions covered by the manufacturer’s specifications. Treat advertised depth as a stated capability, not a promise that applies to every environment.
- Check what the system requires. Professional mapping may require additional hardware and software. Confirm that any needed components are included and that the model suits your intended work.
- Interpret color as feedback, not certainty. A colored light or screen can help you operate the device, but it does not alone establish a target’s material, exact identity, depth, or value.
As a related but different example, Nokta describes its AccuPOINT pinpointer as having a vibrant color display for real-time setting visibility. That feature concerns settings visibility; it does not make a pinpointer equivalent to a wall scanner, ground-search detector, or professional mapping system.
