A colour-change arsenic test is a screening tool: it turns a chemical reaction in a prepared water sample into a colour you compare with the kit’s chart. That colour is not arsenic itself, and the chart gives an estimate rather than a precise laboratory result. Use the specific kit’s instructions, and seek qualified laboratory confirmation when a result is near a decision boundary or will guide an important safety decision.
How does a colour-change arsenic test work?
Many field kits treat a prepared water sample with reagents that convert arsenic into arsine gas. The gas reacts with treated paper or a strip, producing a colour whose intensity is compared with a kit-specific chart. Some systems use an optical photometer instead of visual chart matching. The chemistry, range and accuracy vary by product, so one kit’s instructions or performance should not be assumed to apply to another.
For the Quick kit covered in a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verification report, the resulting yellow-brown colour is proportional to arsenic concentration. The report describes chart comparison as a “semi-quantitative analysis,” not a laboratory measurement: EPA Environmental Technology Verification Report: Quick Arsenic Test Kit.
What does the colour tell you?
Compare the result with the chart supplied for that exact kit and follow its timing and reading instructions. A stronger colour may correspond to a higher concentration on that kit’s chart, but the colour does not yield a precise concentration by itself. Charts may have discrete colour steps; interpolation between them can provide an estimate, but does not make the reading equivalent to laboratory analysis.

- Very faint colour changes can be difficult to distinguish.
- Results depend on training and strict adherence to the procedure; deviations can affect the reading.
- Near a decision boundary, a field result may fall slightly below a laboratory value, although some field results may exceed it.
WHO and UNICEF explain these field-test limitations in their Arsenic Primer. Follow the relevant local authority’s procedure for interpreting borderline results or deciding whether to retest.
How do you test water for arsenic?
- Choose the sampling point. Decide whether you need to assess water at the point of collection or point of consumption. For an initial investigation of a water source, sampling at the point of collection is generally appropriate. Household water may contain less arsenic after storage because arsenic can co-precipitate with iron.
- Use the selected kit’s exact procedure. Follow its directions for the sample, reagents, reaction time and colour reading. Do not transfer a chart or range from a different product.
- Record and interpret the reading as a screening estimate. Note the sample location and result, and apply local authority guidance if the reading is borderline or consequential.
- Arrange qualified laboratory testing when needed. Ask a qualified laboratory about appropriate sampling and confirmatory analysis before making an important decision about water safety.
Sampling instructions can differ between field methods and laboratories; use the instructions for the method you have chosen, as well as any applicable local procedure.

How should you choose an arsenic water test kit?
A kit’s stated range alone does not establish that it is suitable for your decision. Compare the method and instructions against your intended use, and check current manufacturer specifications rather than assuming an older published example reflects a product’s present version or availability.
- Range: Does the stated range cover the decision threshold relevant to your location and purpose?
- Readout: Is the result read visually from a chart or with an optical instrument?
- Sample and interferences: What water sample is suitable, and what conditions could affect the result?
- Procedure: How much training, handling and reaction time does the method require?
- Follow-up: Can you access laboratory confirmation if the result is unclear or important?

- DO-IT-YOURSELF screening of any freshwater supply for Arsenic (tap water, well water, ponds, lakes, streams etc.). Arsenic occurs naturally in the earth's crust, is found in more than 50% of U.S. water supplies and can cause organ-cancer in humans and animals.
- PATENT PENDING DIY TECHNOLOGIES indicate Arsenic concentration ranges of 0 - 500 PPB.
- CERTIFIED “ACCURATE” by EPA-certified scientists with over 150 years of combined experience in testing drinking water. 10 PPB is the USEPA’s Maximum Contamination Level for Arsenic in drinking water. However, no amount of Arsenic is safe to consume.
- FAST RESULTS: At-home screening delivers your test results in just 30 minutes. Unlike most other DIY kits, this kit tests without messy test strips. Includes detailed instructions. One test per kit. NOTE: Testing for Arsenic at a lab can cost hundreds of dollars, making this kit a cost-effective at-home option to screen for Arsenic.
- OPTIONAL TESTING AT OUR EPA-CERTIFIED LAB: Inside this same package is a second kit that provides everything needed to collect a water sample and send it to our EPA-certified lab for professional analysis. You have multiple testing packages to choose from, for up to 48 different parameters (see attached list). *Note: Fees are required for optional testing at our EPA-certified lab.
| Example described by WHO and UNICEF | Reported range |
|---|---|
| Acustrip low-range kit | 2–160 ppb |
| Palintest Visual Arsenic Detection Kit | 10–500 ppb |
| Palintest Digital Arsenic Test Kit | 2–100 ppb |
The EPA verification report for the particular Quick kit describes chart gradations from 0 through 500 ppb. That is the chart’s range, not proof of equal precision at every point or a guarantee for other kits. Use a qualified laboratory when a field result is borderline, unexpected or will inform a consequential decision. Methods identified by WHO include silver diethyldithiocarbamate spectrophotometry, graphite furnace atomic absorption, hydride-generation atomic absorption and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). WHO’s 2019 background document says the atomic-absorption and ICP-MS approaches are more sensitive than the silver spectrophotometric method; it reports a detection limit of about 1 µg/L for the silver spectrophotometric method. Method selection and sampling should be discussed with the laboratory. See WHO’s 2019 background document on arsenic in drinking-water.
Quick Recap

- Accurate Arsenic Water Test Kit - Designed to detect arsenic levels in water with a testing range of 0–0.5 ppm (0–500 ppb). The reading scale includes 0.01, 0.025, 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 ppm. To convert ppm to ppb, simply multiply by 1,000. The color on the chart changes from light to dark, allowing for clear and easy interpretation of results.
- Easy-to-Follow Testing Process - Please read the instructions carefully before use. To begin, pour 100ml of your water sample into the provided reaction bottle. Add the reagents as directed and mix well. Bend the test strip and secure it in the cap so that the reactive pad is exposed to the gas inside the bottle—do not submerge the strip in the liquid. After 30 minutes, compare the test strip to the color chart on the bottle to determine the arsenic level.
- Versatile Applications - This arsenic test kit is suitable for a variety of water sources. Whether you're testing home tap water, private well water, or water in outdoor, agricultural, or industrial settings, it offers reliable and convenient performance wherever you need it.
- What's Included - Arsenic test kit provides materials for five complete tests. It includes a reusable reaction bottle, one bottle of multi-use Reagent I, five single-use tubes of Reagent II and Reagent III, a vial with five arsenic test strips, and five pairs of disposable gloves.
- Safety Note - Always perform the test in a well-ventilated area. Do not touch the reactive pad on the test strips. Use the included gloves during testing, and be sure to read the full instructions before getting started.
