A color-sensing stylus is designed to sample a color from a physical object and make a digital version available for drawing. Scribble describes one such product with a built-in RGB sensor; a European patent outlines the broader interaction. Neither establishes that a sampled screen color will exactly match the object, or that a particular stylus and app are currently supported.
What a color-sensing stylus does
Instead of choosing a color from an on-screen palette, you point a sensor-equipped stylus at a colored surface, capture a reading, and use the resulting digital color in an app. The European Patent Office’s EP 3180680 B1 patent describes this general sequence: touch or approach an object, select the sensed color, then draw on a companion device’s display using that color. The patent uses “stylus” and “digital pen” interchangeably in its description; it describes a concept, not proof that every implementation was manufactured or sold.
Scribble’s product page describes a specific implementation: point its built-in RGB sensor at an object or surface and press a button to capture a color. The company says the color can then be used for drawing or saved and synced with mobile devices. Its page also describes an app for storing colors and converting them to RGB, CMYK, and HEX values. These are vendor descriptions, not independent performance tests.
How the color gets from an object to a drawing
- Sample: Aim the sensor at the object or surface and trigger a reading. The Scribble page says this is done by pointing the pen and pressing a button.
- Transfer: Send the captured color to a compatible app or device. The product page lists Bluetooth and USB connectivity; the Color Picker Stylus App Store listing describes Bluetooth pairing with a compatible stylus.
- Use: Choose the captured value in the app and draw with it. The app listing describes color capture and drawing, while Scribble describes storing colors and converting between digital color formats.
The app is part of the workflow, not an optional detail: without a compatible app and a working connection, capturing a reading does not by itself put that color into a drawing. The App Store listing is for iPhone and iPad, and its visible version-history entries date to 2019. Apple currently says the app has too few ratings to show an overview and that the developer has not provided privacy details to Apple. Those listing details do not establish current compatibility with a particular phone, tablet, operating-system version, or stylus.

Will the screen color match the physical object?
Not necessarily. A digital color value and physical pigment are different outputs: the value can be used to select a color on a screen, but a display’s rendering is not the material itself. The sources available here do not provide independent accuracy testing for Scribble or quantify how closely a captured value corresponds to an object under different lighting and surface conditions. Treat “capture any colors in the world” and similar phrases as promotional descriptions, not a guarantee that every surface can be sampled accurately.
For consistency, check whether a device defines its illumination, calibration method, and color reference library. RANDOM says its ColorSense scanner blocks ambient light with integrated high-CRI white LEDs, is factory calibrated, and can match more than 50,000 named paint colors. These are company claims; the available information does not establish an independent accuracy benchmark or current commercial availability.

What Scribble lists—and what remains unverified
Scribble’s product page lists the following specifications. They are vendor-stated details, not independently measured results.

The product page does not independently verify sensor accuracy, current stock, replacement-tip availability, battery service, or ongoing software support. Before choosing a device, confirm that the listing is for the sensor-equipped model, that its companion app is available for your device, and that the stylus can still pair and transfer colors in your intended workflow.

When a color scanner is a better fit than a stylus
A drawing stylus is aimed at bringing a sampled digital color into an illustration or design workflow. If the priority is matching a physical object to an established color library, a dedicated scanner may be more appropriate.
Pantone describes Ufro InstaPick as a licensed color-capture device that measures an object, matches it to the nearest Pantone Matching System color, and inserts the selection into supported design software. Pantone says it connects to a computer over Bluetooth and uses ColorKing+ for Mac and PC to add color to Adobe Creative Cloud and Expresii. This is a desktop color-matching workflow, not a pen for drawing directly on a tablet.

RANDOM’s ColorSense is another adjacent category: its company page describes a portable scanner that maps real-world colors to digital values and paint brands. That differs from a stylus intended to capture a color for drawing, and its performance claims should be considered company claims rather than independently verified comparisons.

How to decide whether one fits your workflow
- Choose a color-sensing stylus conceptually if your goal is to sample an object and draw with the resulting digital color in a compatible app.
- Check app and device support first if you are considering Scribble or the Color Picker Stylus app. Historical or vendor-listed compatibility is not confirmation that your present setup works.
- Look for defined calibration and lighting if repeatable measurements matter. A vendor’s calibration claim is useful to investigate, but is not the same as independent accuracy testing.
- Consider a color-library scanner if you need a standardized Pantone or paint match for a professional design workflow rather than a tablet drawing input.
- Verify serviceability before buying: current availability, consumables, replacement parts, and software maintenance are not established by the product descriptions cited here.
