Smart home devices are likely to remain part of daily life, but convenience comes with trade-offs: software dependence, possible service interruptions, privacy questions and less direct control. That is the tension at the heart of comedian, author, broadcaster and podcaster Colm O’Regan’s Irish Examiner column, published on 2 October 2026. His verdict is personal and comic rather than a technical review: “So it’s a no from me to smart home tech.”

What is Colm O’Regan’s argument about smart devices?

O’Regan questions whether connected features solve enough of an everyday problem to justify the added complexity. A refrigerator that can report low milk, add it to a shopping list or send expiry alerts may be convenient; his counterpoint is that opening the fridge and looking inside already answers some of those questions.

That is an argument about usefulness, not the result of a comparison test. The column does not measure how well smart and conventional appliances perform, or establish how many owners benefit from connected features. Its broader concern is that devices sold as optional luxuries can become harder to avoid while depending on software, online services and decisions made by manufacturers.

Can a software update brick a smart fridge?

In the column, O’Regan refers to a headline he paraphrases as “Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges.” Firmware is software built into a device; an update changes or replaces some of that software. “Bricking” is an informal term for leaving a device unusable, as if it were a brick.

O’Regan says an update broke Samsung fridges and food spoiled. The column does not name a model, provide an incident count or technical explanation, identify the headline’s source, or include a Samsung statement or independent confirmation. It therefore supports describing this as an incident the columnist cited, not as an independently established account of the update’s cause or scope.

The example illustrates a distinct risk of connected appliances: software changes can create failure modes that a conventional appliance without updateable software does not share. It does not establish how often that happens or show that smart fridges generally are unreliable.

What other concerns does the column raise?

Remote control and dependence on online services

O’Regan imagines cloud-connected cars being disabled remotely and refers to cars being disabled in America when payments lapse. The column gives no source or legal details for that reference, so it should be read as part of his argument about remote control—not as a verified account of a particular policy or case.

Privacy and sensitive data

The column also imagines a smart toilet using cameras, sensors and AI to analyze bodily output, alongside a toothbrush that “smells your breath” and offers gut-health information. It names no products or studies. These examples raise a reasonable question about what information a device collects and who can access it, but the column does not establish the capabilities of a specific product or quantify privacy risks.

How to decide whether a connected feature is worth it

There is no product-by-product comparison or tested recommendation in the column. For an individual purchase, assess the task the feature actually solves against the added dependence and data sharing it may require.

  • Practical benefit: Identify the specific task the connected feature makes easier. Consider whether a simpler appliance or an existing habit already handles it.
  • Connectivity dependence: Check whether the core function still works without an internet connection or cloud service.
  • Update and support dependence: Find out how the device receives updates and what functions remain available if support or a connected service ends.
  • Privacy implications: Look at what data the device collects and how it is used before treating a feature as a harmless convenience.
  • Control: Consider whether remote access or automation gives you useful flexibility—or makes an essential function depend on someone else’s software or service.

Are smart devices here to stay?

O’Regan’s answer is effectively yes, even though he rejects smart home technology for himself. The column closes with that tension: connected devices may be too clever, complicated or intrusive for his taste, yet are likely to remain part of everyday life. His skepticism is a personal stance, not expert consensus.
