In college football, “probable,” “questionable” and “out” are availability labels—not universal NCAA definitions or medical diagnoses. Their meaning depends on the competition’s policy and whether the report is issued during the week or on game day. Check the official report for the specific game and its latest update.

What does probable mean in college football?

There is no single NCAA-wide definition. Under the Southeastern Conference’s 2025–26 football regulations, a pregame “Probable” designation means the player has a stated 75% chance to play. The ACC’s 2025 policy also defines “Probable” as likely to play (75%). These are policy-defined estimates, not measured odds or guarantees that a player will participate.

The SEC also says that if a player has any chance to play, the player must not be listed as “Out” and must be listed at least as “Doubtful” on an initial report. That rule applies to the SEC’s initial report, not as a universal rule for all college football.

What does questionable mean?

Under the SEC’s 2025–26 pregame categories, “Questionable” means a stated 50% chance to play. The ACC’s 2025 policy defines it as uncertain (50%). The label communicates an availability expectation under that policy; it does not identify an injury or establish its severity.

What does out mean?

For the SEC’s 2025–26 pregame report, “Out” means a stated 0% chance to play. The ACC’s 2025 policy defines “Out” as will not play. The SEC also uses “Out” on game day, while its game-day vocabulary includes “Available” and “Game Time Decision.” Always read the label against the policy and report timing rather than assuming every conference uses the same categories.

What do the other college football status labels mean?

Doubtful

The SEC’s 2025–26 pregame regulations assign “Doubtful” a stated 25% chance to play. The ACC’s 2025 policy describes it as unlikely (25%). These percentages are each conference’s category definitions, not universal probabilities.

Game Time Decision

A game-day “Game Time Decision” means the final availability decision is expected closer to the game. The ACC defines it that way in its 2025 policy. The SEC and Big 12 also use the label in their game-day vocabulary; the Big Ten’s 2026 policy includes it on game day as well.

Available

“Available” is an explicit game-day status in the SEC and Big 12 policies described here. The Big Ten’s 2026 policy says student-athletes not listed on a report are considered available. The SEC says unlisted players are available unless exempt. Do not apply those omission rules to a different policy without checking its terms.

Is there an NCAA football injury report?

The policies cited here do not establish a universal NCAA football injury-report key. The Big Ten, ACC, SEC and Big 12 set rules for their specified conference games, while the College Football Playoff (CFP) policy covers playoff games. A rule for one competition should not be treated as an NCAA-wide rule.

“Injury status” is common shorthand, but official availability reports can include more than injuries. The SEC says a player may be reportable because of injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility or personal matters. The ACC says its policy addresses uncertain availability and is intended in part to protect sensitive information. A label alone does not reveal a player’s diagnosis or reason for being listed.

The NCAA’s March 4, 2026 announcement concerns a pilot availability-reporting program for the 2026 Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships. It says the program “will serve as a pilot program” and does not establish a football reporting policy.

When are college football availability reports updated?

Deadlines depend on the governing policy. For Big Ten conference games, the 2026 process calls for reports three, two and one days before the game, plus a game-day report two hours before kickoff. For CFP games, the 2025–26 policy describes daily updates beginning three days before each game and a final report 90 minutes before game time. The Big 12 says its football reports begin three days before conference games, are posted at 9 p.m. CT, and have a final report 90 minutes before kickoff.

Because reports can change near kickoff, use the official report for the particular matchup and check its last update time. When comparing reports, first confirm the competition, whether the report is pregame or game day, the policy’s label definitions, how it treats unlisted players, and the deadline for the final update.
