The Linux Foundation’s 2020 annual report records Colin King’s account of a three-month mentorship project focused on stress-ng. King said the mentee contributed 200 commits and learned about kernel interfaces, GCOV coverage measurement, and open-source patch submission and review. This is a historical testimonial, not evidence that the program is currently accepting participants.
What did the stress-ng mentorship involve?
In the Linux Foundation’s 2020 annual report, Colin King—identified there as a Senior Kernel Engineer at Canonical Ltd—described the “Expanded Mentorship program for stress-ng” as a positive three-month project.

“The Expanded Mentorship program for stress-ng was a very positive and successful 3-month project. Mentee contributed 200 commits to stress-ng and got a working knowledge of a wide range of kernel interfaces, learned how to measure kernel coverage with GCOV, and a lot of practice in the open source patch submission/review process. As a Mentor, it was great to share domain knowledge, pass on good coding practice techniques, and gain valuable stress-ng improvements. A positive outcome, well worth the time and effort.”

King’s testimonial reports 200 mentee commits and describes technical learning alongside experience contributing and reviewing patches. These are outcomes from one attributed account; the report does not establish a typical commit count, an independent evaluation, or results for an entire mentorship cohort.

What is stress-ng?
stress-ng is an open-source tool for applying selectable workloads to computer systems. Its stressors exercise hardware subsystems and operating-system kernel interfaces, including areas such as CPU, virtual memory, filesystems, and caches. The project documents support across multiple operating systems and architectures; its current repository is the place to check the latest compatibility and workload details.
That makes stress-ng relevant to developers exploring how a system behaves under load and to contributors working with kernel interfaces. King’s account connects the mentorship to this work: he said the mentee gained working knowledge of kernel interfaces and learned to measure kernel coverage with GCOV.
Rank #2
Is stress-ng a benchmark?
Not a precise benchmark suite, according to the upstream project documentation. Throughput rates can help users observe changes across software releases or hardware, but they should not be treated as calibrated benchmark results or used alone to make precise performance comparisons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe distinction matters: stressing a system can reveal how it responds to particular workloads, but a stressor’s throughput figure is not automatically a controlled measurement of overall performance.
Rank #3
What should users know before running stress-ng?
Stress tests can impose substantial load. The project warns that some tests may make poorly designed hardware run hot and may cause excessive system thrashing that is difficult to stop. Choose workloads deliberately, monitor the machine, and take the project’s warnings seriously before running tests—especially on systems where heat or heavy load could cause problems.
The project page provides installation options, including distribution packages and a container image, as well as a quick-start reference guide. It also explains how contributors can submit patches or merge requests. Consult the upstream documentation for current instructions, since project details can change.

What is Colin Ian King’s connection to stress-ng?
A Linux Foundation webinar page for a presentation recorded May 19, 2022 identifies Colin Ian King as stress-ng’s main developer. The presentation covered testing concepts, examples, building and installing the tool, results, and contributing. The page described his work in the context of kernel bugs and janitorial fixes; that is a description published with the webinar, not a claim about his current employment.
The stress-ng README also lists a Linux Foundation mentoring session from May 2022 among project presentations. That educational session reference does not show that it was the same program or participant described in the 2020 annual report.

Does the report mean mentorship is available now?
No current enrollment information is established by these sources. The documented evidence is King’s 2020 testimonial and educational material associated with a 2022 presentation. Readers interested in contributing can consult stress-ng’s current repository for its contribution guidance, but that guidance is not an announcement of a mentorship opening.
