Coilr is a web service that signs in with Steam, reads the playtime Steam currently reports for each game, and saves a timestamped snapshot every time you sync. Steam shows how many hours you have logged. Coilr keeps a record of how that number changed, so you can chart activity across days and weeks.
What Coilr records and why snapshots matter
Coilr describes itself as a Steam playtime tracker. Its official home page explains the core mechanism in one line from its FAQ: “Each time you sync, Coilr records a snapshot of your playtime per game.” Repeated snapshots are what turn a single running total into daily, weekly and cumulative charts.
The limit of that design is simple. Coilr can only chart changes it has seen. Steam’s total tells you how many hours a game has accumulated, but not when those hours happened. Coilr says the earlier you start tracking, the more history accumulates, and it does not reconstruct activity from before your first sync. If you connect your account today, your charts begin today.
What else the service offers
Beyond playtime charts, the home page lists several other tools:

Live counts and many browsing tools do not need an account. Your own playtime history does, because it is built from your Steam data.
What Coilr needs from your Steam account
Coilr uses Steam OpenID to authenticate. According to its home page and privacy policy, it does not see or store your Steam password, and its access to your account is read-only. It also states that it does not modify your Steam account.
Three conditions determine whether tracking works:
- Public game details and playtime. Coilr reads only what Steam makes public. It says it cannot access private profile data, so a profile with hidden game details gives the service nothing to snapshot.
- A Steam sign-in. Personal playtime history is tied to the account you authenticate with.
- A sync. A snapshot is created at sync time, so the resolution of your charts depends on when syncs happen.
Manual sync or background auto-sync
You can sync manually or enable background auto-sync. Coilr states that syncs are unlimited. Its sources do not recommend a particular interval. Because a snapshot is taken only at sync, frequent syncs produce more chart points, while infrequent syncs leave longer gaps between them. Choose the cadence that matches how closely you want to follow your playtime.

Where the data comes from
Coilr’s Terms of Service say the service draws playtime, achievement and library data from the Steam Web API and from public Steam website endpoints. Those endpoints also supply store details, prices, artwork and review summaries.
The same terms disclaim any warranty that displayed data is accurate, complete or timely. The terms and the Privacy Policy both state that Coilr is not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by Valve. Treat prices and store details as information to verify on Steam before you buy.

Coilr publishes original research on its Data Reports index. The reports are built on Steam figures and Coilr’s own tracking, and the index says methods and sample sizes are stated. Coilr offers the figures for quotation and republication with attribution.
The most recent backlog report is dated October 1, 2026, and is available at the Steam backlog report page. Its headline figures are:
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
| Measure (Coilr, October 1, 2026) | Reported value | Scope stated in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Games never launched, median sampled library | 22% | 415 public libraries, 111,834 games |
| Games never launched or under one hour of play, median sampled library | 42% | Same sample |
| Never-launched share, libraries with 1,000 or more games (median) | 50% | Same sample, large libraries only |
| Share of a typical sampled player’s Steam time in four games | Half | Median sampled player |
| Median value of unplayed games at current full US price | $356 | Replacement value, not what owners paid |
What the sample does and does not represent
These figures describe Coilr users who synced public libraries. They are not a random sample of all Steam accounts. The report notes that people who choose a playtime tracker may have larger or more curated libraries than a typical Steam account, which would push the numbers above what most accounts show.
Keep these definitions in mind when quoting the figures:
- “Never launched” means Steam recorded no playtime for the game. Offline play, play before Steam tracked hours, and play through another person’s account under Family Sharing can all appear as zero.
- Excluded from the sample: libraries with fewer than 10 games, libraries where every game shows zero playtime, software and desktop toys, and games hidden on Coilr.
- The $356 figure is a replacement value at current full US price. The report notes that sales, bundles, giveaways and unpriced games all affect what people actually spend.
When you cite a statistic, include the report title, the October 1, 2026 date and the sample description, for example: “Coilr, Steam backlog report, October 1, 2026, covering 415 public Steam libraries.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe useful takeaway is less about any single number and more about the method. Coilr’s charts show what changed after you started syncing, and its reports show what a self-selected group of trackers looked like at one point in time. Both are worth reading with the limits above in view.
