Bloomberg reported in April 2017 that Cohesity’s funding round carried a valuation of more than $500 million, but the figure came from an unnamed person familiar with the matter. Founder and CEO Mohit Aron declined to comment on the valuation, so it was a reported estimate—not a company-confirmed figure or a public-market price.

What Bloomberg reported about Cohesity’s valuation

On April 4, 2017, Bloomberg reported that GV and Sequoia Capital co-led a financing round of more than $90 million for Cohesity. An unnamed person familiar with the matter put the company’s valuation above $500 million. Aron declined to comment on that estimate. Bloomberg’s report, republished by Data Center Knowledge, is the source for both the financing details and the valuation attribution.

The distinction matters: the round’s reported size and investors were presented as financing news, while the valuation was attributed to an anonymous source and not confirmed by Cohesity’s CEO. The figure should therefore be understood as a private-round estimate reported in 2017, not as a verified current valuation.

How large was the funding round?

Bloomberg described the financing as Cohesity’s third major funding round and reported that the company had raised more than $160 million in total after it. Those amounts, like the valuation, refer to the 2017 report.

What Cohesity was building at the time

In its 2017 account, Bloomberg described Cohesity as a company focused on “secondary” storage: retained data that could be made available for work such as analytics without requiring the highest storage speeds. It characterized Cohesity’s systems as hyperconverged equipment combining storage, computing, and networking, and reported that the company had agreements for its technology to work with Amazon and Microsoft cloud services. These are descriptions from the 2017 article, not claims about Cohesity’s current products or partnerships. Mint’s same-date republication of Bloomberg’s report also describes the company’s then-current focus.

The report said Cohesity’s products had become publicly available in late 2015 and named Shutterstock and Ultimate Software as customers. It did not disclose sales. Bloomberg reported that the company said its customer count was roughly doubling every quarter; that growth figure was a company statement, not an audited or independently verified metric.

Why the company said it raised the money

Cohesity said it would use the new funding to expand internationally and add engineers. Aron said of the funding, “We’re seeing this big uptake,” and that it “means that I can kind of press on the gas a little bit.” Sequoia Capital partner and Cohesity board member Bill Coughran said, “There’s a lot of market demand.” These comments describe the company’s and investor’s view of the business; they do not confirm the reported valuation.
