Reports in June 2024 alleged that Club Penguin fans hacked a Disney Confluence server and took about 2.5GB of data. The allegation was not confirmed by Disney in Check Point’s June 3–9 threat bulletin, and the sources cited here do not establish later confirmation of this specific incident. The claim that the hackers acted in “retaliation” for Club Penguin’s shutdown is also a reported motive, not an independently established fact.
Was Disney hacked by Club Penguin fans?
Check Point’s threat bulletin covering June 3–9, 2024 described an alleged intrusion into a Disney Confluence server attributed to Club Penguin fans, with about 2.5GB of internal data reportedly exfiltrated. Check Point said Disney had not confirmed the reported incident at the time. Its bulletin is the source for the reported size and attribution; it does not establish a complete, independently authenticated account of what happened. Check Point Research
HotHardware’s June 7, 2024 report framed the incident as fans hacking Disney to obtain more information about Club Penguin, which Disney had shut down. That is a news outlet’s characterization of motive, not an official account. The available sources do not independently establish that the alleged hackers acted specifically to retaliate for the shutdown. HotHardware

Check Point said the reported files included outdated Club Penguin documents alongside more recent Disney corporate information, including internal developer tools, strategies, and credentials. The bulletin does not authenticate a full inventory, so these should be understood as reported contents rather than a verified list of everything taken. Check Point Research

Why is Club Penguin part of the story?
Club Penguin was an online virtual world where players used penguin avatars to chat, join group activities, and furnish virtual homes. Disney’s 2007 acquisition announcement says the game launched in October 2005 and had more than 700,000 paid subscribers at the time. That historical figure describes the subscriber base reported in the acquisition announcement, not a current audience estimate. The Walt Disney Company

Is the 2.5GB report the same as Disney’s later data disclosure?
No. Disney’s filing for the quarter ended June 29, 2024 described an ongoing investigation into the exfiltration and unauthorized release of over one terabyte of data from a company communication system. Disney said that, based on its investigation to date, the incident had not materially affected operations. The filing concerns a different system and a different reported scale; it does not confirm the alleged 2.5GB Confluence incident. The Walt Disney Company SEC filing
