It depends on the tool—and on what you mean by “plan.” A saved conversation or objective may persist separately from the project files and workspace where code changes live. To pick up safely, reopen the same task or project, use its documented resume option, then check your files and version-control status.
What can persist when a terminal closes?
“Plan” can refer to several different kinds of state. A conversation transcript, a thread-specific objective, project instructions, and a workspace containing code changes are not interchangeable. A tool may retain one while another is unavailable or stored elsewhere.
- Conversation or objective: The saved discussion or task context you want to continue.
- Workspace: The project files and changes associated with a local directory, cloud task, worktree, or virtual machine.
- Resume route: The command, session picker, editor interface, or original task that returns you to the right context.
Before assuming a plan is lost—or that all your work is safe—identify which tool and session type you used. Then verify the workspace separately.

Where different coding-agent sessions are kept

How to resume without losing track of your code
- Identify the original context. Find the project directory, cloud task, thread, or editor session you actually used. A new task or a different project may not contain the old context.
- Use that tool’s documented resume route. For Claude Code, run
claude --continueorclaude --resumefrom the relevant project context. For Codex Cloud, reopen the original task; for a Codex Goal, return to its thread. - Check the workspace itself. Inspect the expected files and review your version-control status. A restored conversation does not prove that uncommitted changes are present, and a visible workspace does not prove that the full conversation has been restored.
- Protect important changes. Commit work you need to keep. In Codex Cloud, a separate new task does not recover another task’s uncommitted changes.
Does a session move between apps or devices?
Not necessarily. VS Code’s documented session list can discover certain supported external sessions, but that is a host-specific feature—not a guarantee that every tool transfers all conversation context and workspace state. Likewise, the Agents SDK’s storage options apply to applications built with that SDK; they do not establish universal access to other products’ sessions.

For a cross-app workflow, confirm what the destination actually imported: the chat history, the project files, or both. Treat them as separate until you have checked.
