A cloning progress bar only shows that a copy operation finished; it does not prove that Windows can boot from the new SSD or that the PC is starting from it. Keep the original drive unchanged while you check boot selection, the copied partitions, and compatibility between Windows’ boot mode and the disk layout. This guide covers Windows; the right fix depends on your PC, cloning tool, and exact error.

First, protect both drives

Pause before erasing the original SSD, formatting either disk, or running the clone again. Back up important files from both drives if you can access them. A clone is not a substitute for a separate backup, and some migration tools erase the destination: Samsung’s Data Migration manual, for example, warns that existing data on its target drive is deleted during migration (Samsung Data Migration User Manual).

Record the exact boot error, identify the source and target by physical drive model rather than drive letters, and note how each drive is connected. Include whether the old SSD is still installed. If the source disconnects, reports errors, or holds the only copy of important data, prioritize preserving it and consider qualified recovery help before repeated reads or writes. Age alone does not establish that a drive has failed.

Why a cloned SSD may not boot

The computer may still be starting from the old drive

When both disks remain connected, firmware can select the source drive—or use boot files on it—even if Windows itself appears to be on the target. Check the firmware boot order and, if available, the one-time boot menu. Select the new drive’s Windows Boot Manager entry where shown. Menu names and keys vary by computer, so use the PC or motherboard manual for the exact procedure.

Samsung’s manual tells users to put the target above the source in boot priority and then verify that the operating system starts from the target (Samsung Data Migration User Manual). Where it is safe and practical, test the target with the original drive disconnected—but only after protecting important data and ensuring you can reconnect the source.

The clone may be missing boot-critical partitions

A Windows system disk is more than the visible Windows volume. In Microsoft’s documented UEFI deployment layout, the disk uses GPT and includes an EFI System Partition, a Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR), the Windows partition, and a recovery partition. Copying only the Windows volume, or excluding hidden partitions in a cloning tool, may leave the target without the expected boot structure (Microsoft’s UEFI/GPT partition guidance).

Microsoft’s deployment guidance specifies a minimum EFI System Partition size of 200 MB for 512/512e-byte-sector devices and 300 MB for native 4K-sector devices, plus a 16 MB MSR. Those are deployment requirements, not a universal way to diagnose a particular clone. Do not resize or recreate partitions just because a disk differs from these figures.

Firmware mode and partition style may not match

Windows’ UEFI boot setup expects a GPT disk; legacy BIOS compatibility uses MBR. If the machine is set to UEFI while the relevant disk is MBR, or firmware mode was changed after cloning, boot can fail. Microsoft describes this compatibility issue in its Windows Setup guidance (Microsoft’s MBR/GPT installation guidance).

  • IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.

Check the current firmware mode and the target disk’s partition style before changing either. Do not casually switch between UEFI and legacy compatibility or repartition the drive: first identify which Windows installation and disk layout you are working with.

The cloning utility may not support this drive combination

Migration programs have their own compatibility rules. Samsung describes Data Migration as a tool for migration to a Samsung SSD, and its documentation specifies an NVMe-driver prerequisite for the NVMe-target workflow it covers. Those requirements apply to that product and setup, not to every cloning tool. Samsung also notes that Magician features may vary for non-Samsung or OEM drives (Samsung storage tools and support).

A safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Stop destructive changes. Back up important data on both drives if possible. Do not clean, format, convert, or overwrite a disk whose identity or contents are uncertain.
  2. Identify the symptom and hardware. Write down the exact error, source and target SSD models, interfaces, connection type, cloning utility and version, and whether both drives are attached. Avoid relying on drive letters to tell disks apart.
  3. Check which disk firmware selects. Use the firmware boot order or one-time boot menu to select the target’s Windows Boot Manager entry, if listed. Follow the device manual because the key and menu differ by system.
  4. Verify the target independently when practical. After protecting data, shut down and disconnect the old drive only if you can safely reconnect it. Try to start from the target alone. This can reveal whether the old disk was supplying boot files.
  5. Inspect boot mode and partition style. In Windows recovery or another trusted environment, determine whether the target is GPT or MBR and whether firmware is using UEFI or legacy compatibility. Compare the actual setup with Microsoft’s documented relationship between boot mode and partition style rather than changing settings by guesswork.
  6. Review what the cloning program copied. Check its report and settings for included system and recovery partitions, as well as model, interface, controller, and driver requirements. Consult the vendor’s instructions for that specific program and configuration.
  7. Choose a repair only after finding a mismatch. Avoid boot-repair commands, conversion, disk cleaning, or formatting until you know which disk they would affect and why. If the problem remains unclear, preserve both copies and collect the details above for device-specific support.

When conversion or repair is appropriate

MBR2GPT is not a generic fix for every failed clone. Microsoft documents it as a workflow for qualifying MBR-to-GPT conversions: it creates or reuses an EFI partition, installs UEFI boot files, changes partition metadata, and updates the Boot Configuration Data (BCD). The documentation also records a possible outcome in which some BCD entries are not restored (Microsoft’s MBR2GPT documentation).

That conversion article gives different EFI partition sizes from Microsoft’s general UEFI deployment guidance: 100 MB, or 260 MB for 4K-sector disks, under the MBR2GPT workflow. The documents describe different procedures and criteria, so neither set of sizes is a universal rule for every clone. Identify the disk layout and confirm that conversion fits the problem before proceeding; if the disk map is uncertain, stop rather than risk changing the wrong drive.

Retry, repair, or restore?

There is no single best next step without knowing whether the source is readable, what the tool copied, and which disk firmware uses. Compare the options by their risks and evidence:

Option When it may fit Main checks and risks
Retry the clone The source is readable and you have identified a missed partition or a documented tool-compatibility issue. Back up target contents first; confirm the tool supports the exact drives and will copy the required partitions. Some tools erase existing target data.
Repair boot setup The target’s contents and partition layout are understood, and a specific boot configuration problem has been identified. Confirm the selected disk and firmware mode before repair. A wrong-disk operation can affect the source or target.
Restore a separate image backup You have a usable image and want to restore from that independent copy. Confirm which disk will be overwritten and that the backup is intact. A clone itself is not an independent backup.
Replace a drive There is evidence of a drive fault or the target is incompatible with the setup. Do not infer failure from age alone. Preserve recoverable data before retiring or repeatedly stressing a problematic source.

What to gather if it still will not start

Keep both drives unchanged and collect the PC model, Windows version, source and target SSD models and interfaces, cloning tool and version, firmware boot mode, partition map, exact error text, and which drives were attached during each boot attempt. These details help support staff distinguish a wrong boot selection from a missing partition, mode mismatch, or tool limitation.
