Neither is proven to find media better overall. Apple Photos documents search for people, places, dates, events, objects, and scenes. A CLIP-based search tool may help when you want to describe what a picture shows in ordinary language, including details that do not appear in its metadata. Those are different strengths, not the result of a controlled accuracy comparison.
Use Photos first for its built-in categories and library workflow. Consider a CLIP-based app if descriptive visual queries suit the way you look for images. To choose confidently, compare both against the same files and searches.
What is the difference between CLIP search and Photos search?
“CLIP Search” does not identify one particular app here. CLIP is an approach used by different products, and their features, privacy practices, compatibility, and media support can vary. ShotSelect is one macOS example; Immich documents contextual CLIP search as another implementation. Their capabilities should not be assumed to apply to every CLIP-based tool.
Apple describes Photos search as finding people, places, dates, events, objects, and scenes. Its examples include basketball, birthday cake, and beach. Apple also says that face recognition, scene detection, object detection, and related analysis happen on-device. These are Apple’s descriptions of its product, not independent test results. Immich says its contextual CLIP search can accept freeform queries without requiring the search terms to appear in image or video metadata. Its documentation points users searching only in English to the CLIP section; that guidance does not establish that CLIP works only in English or that it is always more accurate. Immich search documentation.
Which search is a better fit for your query?
| What you want to find | Better starting point | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| A person, place, date, or event | macOS Photos | Apple says Photos search covers these categories. The source does not provide a comparative success rate. |
| A recognizable object or scene | Try Photos first; also test a CLIP tool if a description is more natural | Apple lists objects and scenes. Immich documents freeform contextual CLIP queries. Neither source shows which approach finds a given target more reliably. |
| A visual description that may not match metadata | Evaluate a CLIP-based search | Immich says contextual CLIP queries need not repeat words in image or video metadata. This is a documented capability, not a guarantee for every query or app. |
| A particular moment in a video | Verify the actual app and OS behavior | The cited documentation does not establish equivalent video search behavior between Apple Photos and CLIP tools, or whether either finds a specific moment. |
How to compare them on your own library
A fair comparison uses the same files and queries in both tools. Before judging the results, check whether each app can access the same library and whether it requires import or indexing; the cited sources do not establish a like-for-like setup.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Choose target files you can verify. Include a photo tied to a known person, date, or place; one with a clear object or scene; and one that you would describe with an ordinary-language visual prompt.
- Write the queries before searching. For example: a known person or date, “basketball,” and a description of a scene in your own words. Use equivalent queries where each app allows them, and keep the target files the same.
- Run each query in both apps. Note whether the intended item appears among the first results, how long it takes to find a useful result, and whether opening it leads to the expected original.
- Record misses as well as hits. A result that looks similar but is not the target is not a successful find. Keep the query set and library description with your notes so the comparison is meaningful.
This is a way to make a personal choice, not a published benchmark. Results from one library or query set do not establish a universal winner.

Privacy claims depend on the specific product
Apple says Photos’ face, scene, and object analysis happens on-device. ShotSelect says its free tier runs on the Mac, but that is a vendor statement, not an independent audit. Do not treat one CLIP app’s privacy description as representative of all CLIP tools. ShotSelect features.

Confirm the app’s Mac requirements
ShotSelect lists macOS 12 or later and support for Apple Silicon and Intel. Those requirements are specific to ShotSelect and may change. Check the current requirements for the actual app you plan to use rather than assuming every CLIP implementation supports the same Macs. ShotSelect features.
Test the files and video behavior you care about
Do not assume Photos and a CLIP tool index the same library in the same way, support the same media, or search video equally. Confirm the chosen app’s import or library connection, indexing process, and handling of videos—especially if you need to locate a particular moment rather than a whole clip.

Is there a proven winner?
No controlled head-to-head result in the cited product documentation establishes that Photos or CLIP search finds media more accurately overall. The sources describe capabilities, not tests on a common library with common queries and a shared measure of success. Treat the choice as a matter of which search mode works better for your files: Photos’ documented categories or a particular CLIP app’s descriptive-query features.
