A supervised feasibility study found that Google’s research chatbot AMIE could gather patient histories and offer diagnostic suggestions before scheduled primary-care visits. The results are promising for preparing clinicians, but they do not show that a chatbot can provide urgent care on its own or replace a doctor.
What the clinical trial tested
AMIE, short for Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer, is a research conversational diagnostic AI developed by Google. In a prospective study at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, adults scheduled for an urgent-care appointment completed a text conversation with AMIE before meeting their primary-care physician. The system collected a clinical history and suggested possible diagnoses; its transcript and summary could be made available to the physician. The study registry lists Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as sponsor and Google LLC as collaborator. Study registry.
Google Research reports that 100 adult patients completed an AMIE text interaction. A physician supervisor monitored interactions and could interrupt if safety concerns arose. This was therefore a supervised pre-visit workflow, not a test of patients receiving autonomous chatbot care. Google described it as an initial real-world clinical feasibility study. What the study reported
According to the Google Research publication record, AMIE’s differential diagnosis included the final diagnosis established through chart review in 90% of cases, and its top-three diagnostic accuracy was 75%. Those measures describe different things: the first means the final diagnosis appeared somewhere in the list of possibilities; the second concerns whether it appeared among the system’s top three suggestions. Neither figure means AMIE always selected the correct diagnosis as its leading answer.

In blinded evaluation, the study record says the overall quality and safety of AMIE’s differential diagnoses and management plans were similar to those of primary-care physicians. Physicians scored higher on the practicality and cost-effectiveness of management plans. These findings come from a single-center feasibility setting with human supervision; they do not establish that AMIE and a clinician are interchangeable. Google Research publication record.
What “could aid urgent care” means in practice
The tested use was to collect a history and prepare information for a clinician ahead of a scheduled appointment. A tool that helps organize a patient’s account or surfaces possibilities could support a clinician’s preparation, but the study does not establish that it reduces workload, improves patient outcomes, or is safe without supervision. The physician remained part of the workflow and could review the patient context and chatbot output.

Some additional figures appeared in a New York Times report reproduced by KhanList: that physicians found the chatbot helpful in about 75% of patient cases and that it may have changed how clinicians handled more than half of cases. The same report described one date error across hundreds of conversations and said supervisors did not stop any sessions but supplied additional context five times. These are secondary news-report figures, not outcome definitions established here from the primary paper, so they should be treated cautiously. KhanList’s reproduction of the report.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsImportant limits on the findings
- Feasibility is not clinical effectiveness. The study shows that this supervised workflow was evaluated in a real clinical setting; it does not prove that using AMIE improves care or outcomes.
- The setting was narrow. Participants were adults at one academic medical center, interacting by text before scheduled appointments. Results should not be assumed to apply to emergency departments, other patient groups, other health systems, or chatbots generally.
- Diagnostic metrics are not interchangeable. Having the final diagnosis somewhere in a differential is not the same as choosing it first, and neither result establishes that a management plan is practical or cost-effective.
- Human oversight mattered. A physician supervisor monitored conversations, and clinicians could use the transcript and summary in the context of the visit. The study does not test unsupervised general use.
How this differs from later AI-care research
Google later announced a separate nationwide randomized study with Included Health. That announcement describes a different study, not a randomized or nationwide phase of the Beth Israel Deaconess feasibility evaluation. Google Research’s announcement.
