For a phone speaker grille, stick to gentle exterior wiping: power the phone off, unplug it, remove the case, and wipe the outside with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Do not poke, scrape, brush into, blow into, or put liquid on the grille. If the sound became muffled after the phone got wet, follow that model’s drying guidance instead; persistent muffling or suspected liquid damage calls for manufacturer or authorized service.
How to clean a phone speaker grille safely
- Power down and unplug. Turn off the phone and disconnect cables and accessories before cleaning. Follow the maker’s instructions for your exact model. Apple, Samsung, and Google all publish device-cleaning guidance: Apple’s iPhone cleaning instructions, Samsung’s Galaxy cleaning guidance, and Google’s Pixel cleaning guidance.
- Remove the case and inspect the opening. Under good light, check whether the case partly covers the grille or whether dust is visible on the exterior. Removing the case is a practical inspection step, not a universal manufacturer requirement.
- Wipe only the exterior. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and wipe gently. Samsung specifically names microfiber or camera-lens cloths for gentle device-surface wiping. This may remove surface dust, but manufacturer surface-cleaning guidance does not establish that a cloth can clear compacted debris inside a grille. Keep cloth fibers and all other objects out of the holes.
- Stop if the grille still looks blocked. Do not insert a pin, toothpick, cotton swab, paper, brush bristle, or other object. Avoid scraping, brushing into the opening, suction, compressed air, heat, and sprays or liquids directed at the grille. Apple, Samsung, and Google caution against compressed air or cleaning products around phones; none of the reviewed guidance validates a universal mechanical method for clearing a compacted speaker grille.
Is the muffling from dust or water?

What to do if the phone got wet
Moisture is a different problem from dry surface dust. Apple says water in an iPhone speaker or microphone can affect performance until it evaporates. For an iPhone, Apple’s instruction is: “Place your iPhone, speaker side down, on a lint-free cloth and see if water drips out.” Apple also advises leaving the phone in a dry area with airflow and avoiding external heat or inserting a foreign object into the connector. See Apple’s guidance on splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later. Follow these steps only for the applicable iPhone guidance, not as a universal procedure for every phone.
Samsung says a wet speaker or receiver may affect call quality and advises service-center inspection after water exposure. Its instructions for rinsing dirty liquid apply only to water-resistant Galaxy phones; do not rinse another phone, or a Galaxy model whose guidance does not support it. Samsung also cautions: “Do not use chemical cleaners, abrasive materials, compressed air or external heat sources to clean your device.” Consult Samsung’s water-exposure guidance for the applicable model.

Water resistance varies by model and condition; it is not permission to direct liquid into speaker openings. Apple notes that splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent and can decrease with normal wear. Identify the exact model and use its current manufacturer instructions.

When to stop cleaning and get help
- The sound remains muffled after gentle exterior wiping or the model-appropriate drying steps.
- Debris appears compacted inside the grille rather than resting on the surface.
- The phone was exposed to liquid and you suspect damage.
At that point, stop experimenting and contact the phone maker or an authorized service provider. The available manufacturer instructions do not establish a universal waiting period or diagnose internal faults, so avoid escalating to force, chemicals, or improvised tools.
