Choose Claude Code if you want an agent you can run in a terminal and use alongside your current editor; choose Cursor if you want an AI coding agent built into its own editor. Neither is established as the overall performance winner: the available official documentation describes features and pricing, not a controlled comparison. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a verified account of 30 days of personal testing.
How Claude Code and Cursor differ
The central difference is where each product places the coding workflow. Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal-oriented agent that works with existing development tools. Cursor is an AI coding editor with an agent and related workflows integrated into the editor.
| What to compare | Claude Code | Cursor |
|---|---|---|
| Primary workspace | Terminal, with IDE extensions and other development tools. Anthropic says it works alongside a developer’s preferred IDE. Anthropic product page | Cursor’s AI coding editor, with agent workflows for understanding code, planning, implementation, bug fixing, and review. Cursor documentation |
| Integration and customization | Anthropic lists command-line tools, Git, MCP servers, and native extensions for VS Code, Cursor, and JetBrains. Anthropic product page | Cursor documents integrations and customization through plugins, skills, MCPs, and rules. Cursor documentation |
| Access and pricing | Listed through Pro and Max, as well as Team, Enterprise, or Console. Console usage consumes API tokens at standard API pricing. Anthropic product page | A free Hobby tier with limited Agent requests, plus paid individual, team, and enterprise options. Cursor pricing |
These are vendor-described product workflows, not independently verified measures of capability. Anthropic’s page says Claude Code can handle work such as bug fixes, testing, refactors, and new features; Cursor’s documentation describes its own agent workflows. Those descriptions do not establish which product completes a given task better.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Claude Code if you want to keep your existing editor
Claude Code is the more natural fit if your preferred workflow starts in a terminal or you want to add an agent to tools you already use. Anthropic lists native extensions for VS Code, Cursor, and JetBrains, as well as support for command-line tools, Git, and MCP servers. The fact that Claude Code can run inside Cursor does not make the products the same: one is an agent that can work alongside an editor, while the other is an editor with an integrated agent workflow.

Choose Cursor if you want the editor and agent together
Cursor is a better fit if you want to work in an AI-oriented editor where code understanding, planning, implementation, bug fixing, and review are part of the documented workflow. Its documentation also covers plugins, skills, MCPs, and rules for customization. Consider whether moving to a dedicated editor suits your habits and existing setup.
Choose based on your actual integrations
List the editor, terminal tools, and integrations your projects depend on, then check each vendor’s current documentation for the specific support you need. The sources establish different integration and customization surfaces, but do not establish that one ecosystem is universally more capable.

Prices and terms can change, and availability may vary by geography. Check the live plan details for your location and expected workload before subscribing. The entry prices alone do not show whether the products offer equivalent usage: the documented plan allowances and model usage are not directly comparable. Console access for Claude Code uses API tokens at standard API pricing, so it is a different billing route from the listed subscriptions.

Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
The evidence here cannot support a performance winner. The reviewed official sources describe vendor workflows, integrations, and pricing; they do not report a controlled head-to-head test of quality, speed, reliability, or cost on the same coding tasks. No independent comparative statistic is established by these sources.
A useful comparison for your own work would use the same representative tasks, project context, model settings, and success criteria in both products. Record product versions, plan tiers, dates, and usage limits as well: differences in configuration or available usage can affect the result. Without that evidence, “better” depends on which workflow and integrations suit you.
