To make Claude useful inside an existing codebase, give it concise project context, choose how much permission it has, and connect only the tools your workflow needs. Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal agent for reading a repository, editing files, and running commands; it also has integrations for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs. This guide explains a practical setup without implying that one configuration fits every project.
Start with repository context
In a repository you expect to revisit, open Claude Code from the project and run /init. Anthropic’s Claude Help Center says this creates a CLAUDE.md file with project information such as build commands, architecture, and conventions. Treat the generated file as a draft: check it against the codebase, correct mistakes, and remove details that are not useful to someone working on the project.
Keep CLAUDE.md focused. Put the most important rules near the top, and include the commands a developer needs to build, test, and lint the project. A concise, accurate guide is more useful than a long file that mixes stable conventions with task-specific instructions. When asking Claude to inspect a particular area, name the relevant file or directory.

Claude Code offers different levels of control. Pick a mode that matches the risk of the task rather than granting broad approvals by default. Anthropic describes read-only plan mode, accept-edits mode that still prompts before commands, and manual mode that asks before risky edits or commands.

- Read-only planning: Use this to explore an unfamiliar repository or plan a consequential change before allowing edits.
- Accept edits, prompt for commands: Use this when you want Claude to make file changes while retaining a checkpoint before shell commands run.
- Manual approval: Use this when you want to review risky edits and commands as they arise.
Permission patterns can be managed in project settings or interactively. Keep them specific to the commands or paths the work actually requires; inspect a proposed shell command before approving it, especially if it changes files, installs dependencies, or affects systems beyond the repository. Put each instruction in the right place

CLAUDE.md: Stable project guidance Claude should have available across work, such as conventions, architecture notes, and standard build or test commands.- Skills: Repeatable procedures that are useful when called for, rather than instructions that should apply to every task.
- Hooks: Deterministic actions that run in response to configured events, such as a check after an edit. Review the commands a hook will execute and configure them deliberately.
Rules, subagents, and output styles cover other instruction and workflow needs. They are not substitutes for a clear project guide. Use Claude where you already work
You can work in the terminal or use Claude Code integrations for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs. Choose the interface that fits your existing development routine; an IDE integration does not remove the need to review edits or commands.

For typed languages, configured language-server protocol (LSP) integrations can add symbol-level navigation and automatic error detection. These integrations require configuration; do not assume they are active simply because Claude can access the repository. Anthropic’s large-codebase guidance covers LSP and other extension points.
Add external connections only for a real need
Model Context Protocol (MCP) can connect Claude Code to external tools or data—for example, an issue tracker when a task depends on issue details. Project-level configuration can use .mcp.json or the claude mcp add command. After configuring a connection, run /mcp to check it. Before relying on an integration, review what external information it exposes and what actions it can take.

Keep installation and updates in mind
Anthropic’s setup documentation says native installs update automatically, while Homebrew and WinGet installs do not auto-update by default. If you installed through a package manager, check the current Claude Code setup documentation for the appropriate update instructions. Installation and update commands can change, so use the current official instructions for your platform.
Make the first task easy to review
Begin with a bounded change that has a clear expected result, such as updating one function or fixing a specific test. Ask Claude to inspect the relevant files and propose a plan first if the code is unfamiliar or the change is risky. Then review the proposed edits, run the project’s relevant checks, and inspect any command before approving it. This gives you a concrete way to assess whether the repository guidance and permission choices are working for your project.
