A disposable environment can let Claude Code install packages and run commands without giving it the keys to your everyday computer—but only if you deliberately limit what it can access. Filesystem isolation, network rules, credentials, mounted project files, and cleanup all matter. “Disposable” does not automatically mean isolated or erased.

What a disposable environment changes

Claude Code can install tools and execute commands as part of coding work. A separate environment gives those actions a boundary: instead of running directly on your ordinary computer, the agent works inside a sandbox or a separate machine. If the boundary is configured well, unwanted changes are easier to contain and discard.

That boundary is not the model’s judgment. Sandboxing is an operating-system or infrastructure control, and it only limits the resources it actually covers. Anthropic identifies two distinct controls as necessary: filesystem restrictions limit which files the agent can read or change, while network restrictions limit where it can connect. A gap in either can expose data or enable communication outward. Anthropic’s sandboxing overview

Choose the isolation level that fits the work

Approach What the agent can access Network and credentials Persistence and cleanup
Separate physical computer Depends on what is stored on that computer and what directories or devices are shared with it. A dedicated machine is not automatically isolated from accounts or networks it can reach. Depends on its network setup and credentials. Keep personal accounts and secrets off it unless the task requires them. Files remain until you remove them or reset the machine. No particular hardware or setup is established here.
Claude Code local sandbox Anthropic describes OS-level controls for file paths and sandboxed commands, including subprocesses. Configuration determines the boundary. Network controls can restrict hosts; allowed hosts still create a possible route for data to leave. Depends on the machine and sandbox configuration. The documentation does not establish that all data is erased automatically.
Docker Sandbox Docker documents full read/write control inside the sandbox VM, including sudo and package installation. A directly mounted workspace remains on the host. Outbound TCP is blocked unless an explicit rule allows a destination. Credentials are absent unless supplied through supported mechanisms or environment variables. VM contents persist across stop and restart; sbx rm removes the sandbox. Mounted workspace files and clone-source repositories remain on the host.
Managed cloud session Anthropic describes isolated cloud sessions; its managed-agent documentation says each session gets a fresh Linux container. Limited-network mode uses an explicit host allowlist. Cloud Git interactions can use a proxy with scoped credentials rather than placing sensitive Git credentials and signing keys inside Claude Code’s sandbox. The managed-agent documentation describes fresh containers per session. This is distinct from consumer Claude Code features and should not be assumed to describe every cloud product.

For a quick local setup, Anthropic describes a Claude Code sandbox runtime using operating-system primitives such as Linux bubblewrap and macOS Seatbelt. Its Help Center describes the /sandbox command as enabling file and network isolation, with options for sandboxed bash with auto-allow, sandboxed bash with regular permissions, or no sandbox. The runtime is described as a research preview, so check current availability and platform support before relying on it. What Docker Sandbox does—and leaves on the host

Docker documents this quick start for running Claude Code against a project directory:

sbx run claude ~/my-project

The project directory is mounted into the sandbox, so edits to those files affect the host copy. Docker also documents creating a sandbox without a workspace path and attaching to it by name. The documented setup requires an Anthropic API key or subscription; host user-level settings in ~/.claude are not automatically present. Docker: Claude Code in Docker Sandboxes

Docker’s documented default startup command uses claude --dangerously-skip-permissions. That setting removes Claude Code’s usual permission prompts, making the sandbox boundary especially important; it is not evidence that the agent is safe to run without isolation. Docker describes the sandbox as a VM with full control inside it, including sudo, package managers, and a private Docker Engine. Review the current defaults and security model before use. Stopping and restarting a Docker Sandbox does not reset it: its VM contents persist. Removing the sandbox with sbx rm deletes those contents, but it does not delete a directly mounted project directory or a repository used as the clone source. Decide whether files should be mounted, copied in, or kept in persistent sandbox storage, and review changes before removing anything.

Set boundaries before letting the agent install software

  1. Limit visible files. Give the agent access only to the project directories it needs. Keep personal files, unrelated workspaces, keys, and other sensitive data outside its reach. A mount can make host files available even when commands run in a VM. Anthropic’s sandboxing overview · Docker Sandboxes security
  2. Restrict outbound connections. Start with blocked or limited network access where practical, and allow only necessary hosts. Revisit that list as the task changes. An allowed destination is not inherently safe: a successful prompt injection could use an allowed host to send data out. Anthropic: Claude Code sandboxing · Claude Code overview
  3. Keep credentials out of project files and images. Docker says credentials are not available unless supplied through sbx secret or environment variables. Provide only credentials the task needs, scope them narrowly, and rotate them if exposure is suspected. Anthropic’s cloud description likewise separates sensitive Git credentials and signing keys from the sandbox and uses a proxy for Git interactions. Docker Sandboxes security · Anthropic’s sandboxing overview
  4. Make persistence and cleanup explicit. Identify which files are host-mounted, copied into the sandbox, or stored in an environment that survives restarts. Review changes before cleanup, and know which command or action removes the VM versus only stopping it.
  5. Review the trust boundary. A sandbox reduces the possible blast radius; it does not prove arbitrary software is harmless or stop data from leaving through permitted channels. Operators remain responsible for matters such as image hardening, network egress, key storage, log retention, and workload isolation. Claude Code overview

Why fewer permission prompts can help

Anthropic reports that, in its internal usage, sandboxing reduced permission prompts by 84%. That is the company’s internal finding, not an independent benchmark or a result guaranteed for every user or setup. Fewer interruptions can make it easier to let the agent carry out routine work, but the benefit depends on the isolation controls actually containing that work. Anthropic’s engineering article

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
