You can use Claude Code in VS Code with Opus 5.5 through Microsoft Foundry. First deploy Opus 5.5 in a Foundry project, then configure the Claude Code extension to use Foundry and the exact deployment name you created. This matters because Microsoft’s current model catalog lists claude-opus-5-5, while its Claude Code setup guide still uses the older claude-opus-4-6 in example settings. Don’t assume the guide’s default model points to Opus 5.5.
What you need before setup
Microsoft’s setup guide lists these prerequisites for connecting Claude Code to Foundry:
- A paid Azure subscription with a valid payment method.
- Access to Microsoft Foundry and a project in a supported region.
- Suitable permissions for the Foundry project and resource, plus eligibility to use Azure Marketplace partner-model offerings.
- VS Code and the Claude Code extension.
- On Windows, Git Bash or WSL2. The guide specifies 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended. Git 2.23 or later is optional but recommended for pull-request helpers.
Partner-model eligibility and regional availability can vary and may change. Check your account and project before troubleshooting the extension. See Microsoft’s Claude Code for Microsoft Foundry setup guide.

Choose a Foundry hosting option
Foundry offers Azure-hosted and Anthropic-hosted Claude options. “Using Foundry” does not by itself mean inference runs entirely on Azure: the hosting option determines where the model is hosted. Microsoft says Anthropic is the seller and operator of Claude models in Foundry in either case, and Anthropic’s Claude terms apply.

For an organization, compare data processing and residency requirements, API needs, deployment type and region, support path, purchasing flow, and applicable terms before choosing. Microsoft describes the options in its Foundry Claude hosting overview.
Deploy Opus 5.5 and note its deployment name
- Open your Foundry project and confirm it is in a supported region for the model and hosting option you want.
- Find Claude Opus 5.5 in the model catalog and deploy it. Microsoft currently identifies the catalog model as
claude-opus-5-5and lists it as generally available for both Azure-hosted and Anthropic-hosted Foundry options. - Record the deployment name shown for your deployment. Use that exact name when configuring Claude Code; a deployment name you chose may differ from the catalog model identifier.
Microsoft lists a 1M-token context window and a maximum output of 128K tokens for Opus 5.5 in its current Foundry Claude model catalog. These are catalog specifications, not a promise of available quota for your project.

Install and configure the VS Code extension
- Install the Claude Code extension from the VS Code Marketplace.
- Open VS Code Settings and search for Claude Code: Environment Variables.
- Add
CLAUDE_CODE_USE_FOUNDRYwith value1andANTHROPIC_FOUNDRY_RESOURCEwith the name of your Foundry resource. If you use API-key authentication, add the API key as an environment variable as described in Microsoft’s setup guide. - If using Microsoft Entra ID, sign in with Azure CLI by running
az loginbefore using Claude Code. - To make Opus 5.5 the default Opus model, set
ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODELto the exact deployment name from Foundry. The guide’s sample value,claude-opus-4-6, is an older example; replace it rather than copying it for an Opus 5.5 deployment.
Microsoft documents environment-variable setup for the extension, but its example does not specifically demonstrate Opus 5.5 in VS Code. Applying the documented deployment-name setting to your Opus 5.5 deployment is the relevant configuration; verify the active model in the next section. The guide also documents selecting a deployed model directly in the CLI with claude --model <deployment-name>.

- Open the Claude Code panel in VS Code using its Spark icon.
- Enter
/status. Confirm the provider is Microsoft Foundry and the model shown matches the Opus 5.5 deployment name you recorded. - Send a small prompt asking Claude Code to summarize the open project. A response confirms that the extension can reach the configured model.
If the status output shows another provider or model, recheck the Foundry resource variable, deployment name, and default Opus model setting. For access or deployment failures, also confirm project permissions, Marketplace eligibility, region availability, and that the deployment is active.

Understand quota and billing before relying on capacity
Microsoft’s quota table lists these pay-as-you-go defaults for Opus 5.5 Global Standard and US Data Zone Standard Azure-hosted deployments: 40 requests per minute, 40,000 input tokens per minute, and 8,000 output tokens per minute. These are subscription-specific defaults, not guaranteed throughput; the table also gives higher defaults for Enterprise/MCA-E subscriptions and zero defaults for free trials. Check your project’s actual capacity in Microsoft’s Claude model quotas and rate limits.
Foundry Claude usage is billed through Claude Consumption Units. Check Microsoft’s current billing documentation and the terms for your selected hosting option for current charges; quota figures are not a price quote.

Authentication: Entra ID or API key
Microsoft recommends Microsoft Entra ID authentication through Azure CLI. It suits managed environments where sign-in and access are handled through Azure identity. An API key can be simpler for a project-level setup, but anyone with access to the key may be able to use it, so keep it out of source code and other shared files and follow your organization’s secret-handling practices. The extension’s environment-variable settings support the resource name and, when applicable, an API key.
