Claude Code is supported in WSL, but the fix depends on what fails. Start by checking whether your distro is WSL 1 or WSL 2, then match the error to the relevant install, PATH, login, or network check below. Anthropic’s current setup and troubleshooting pages, accessed October 7, 2026, cover both WSL and native Windows use.
Check your WSL version first
WSL 2 supports Claude Code sandboxing; WSL 1 does not. Anthropic presents WSL 1 as an option when WSL 2 is unavailable, but documents a WSL 1-specific failure that can stop the native Claude Code binary from launching.
For “cannot execute binary file: Exec format error”
Check the distro version from PowerShell with wsl --list --verbose. If the affected distro is version 1, Anthropic identifies this error as a known native-binary regression: the binary’s program headers changed in a way WSL 1’s loader cannot handle. The recommended repair is to convert the distro to WSL 2:
wsl --set-version <DistroName> 2Replace <DistroName> with the exact distro name shown by wsl --list --verbose. If you must stay on WSL 1, Anthropic documents an invocation workaround through the dynamic linker in ~/.bashrc; consult its troubleshooting guidance for the applicable workaround. Treat that as a fallback, not the preferred fix.

Install Claude Code with a WSL Linux toolchain
Use the current Linux installation instructions inside your WSL shell rather than assuming an older npm-only setup. Anthropic’s standalone native installer is:
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bashAfter installation, check that the command is available and run the built-in diagnostic:
claude --version
claude doctorThe native installer is a separate supported route from npm. If you choose npm, Anthropic’s current setup page requires Node.js 22 or later; older Node version requirements may no longer apply.

If npm reports a platform mismatch
WSL may be using Windows npm rather than the Linux toolchain. Anthropic documents setting npm’s operating system to Linux and then installing the package with force:
npm config set os linux
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code --forceDo not run the install with sudo, as Anthropic advises against it.
If launch says “exec: node: not found”
Check which executables your shell resolves:
which npm
which nodePaths beginning with /mnt/c/ point to Windows binaries, not Linux binaries in the WSL environment. Use a Linux Node installation from your distro’s package manager or nvm. If nvm is installed in both Windows and WSL, Windows PATH entries imported into WSL can cause Windows nvm to take precedence.

If claude is missing or the wrong version runs
Anthropic says the native Linux installer puts the launcher at ~/.local/bin/claude. If that directory is not on your shell PATH, add it and open a new terminal. To locate duplicates and verify what runs, use:

claude --version
claude doctorMultiple native, legacy local npm, or global npm installations can leave an older or unintended binary first on PATH. Use the paths returned by which -a claude to identify the copy your shell selects, then remove or reorder conflicting installations as appropriate. Anthropic’s troubleshooting page covers command-not-found and wrong-version cases.
Fix WSL2 browser sign-in that does not return to the terminal
In WSL 2, the browser usually opens on a different host from the callback server running in the WSL environment. If browser sign-in succeeds but the CLI does not continue, paste the login code displayed by the browser into the terminal.

- If the browser does not open, set
BROWSERto the Windows browser executable path, or copy the OAuth URL and open it in a browser on the local machine. - If pasting into the interactive prompt appears to do nothing, try the terminal’s alternate paste binding or run
claude auth login.

Separate download and network errors from local launch errors
If installation cannot fetch the version or download files, test whether your network can reach Anthropic’s release host:
curl -I https://downloads.claude.ai/claude-code-releases/latestAnthropic says an HTTP 200 indicates the host was reached. A 403 can indicate proxy or network filtering, or regional unavailability; a 5xx response commonly indicates a temporary service issue. No output, DNS errors, and timeouts point to blocked connectivity. This check diagnoses access to the host, not whether a local Claude Code binary can launch.

For corporate proxies or certificate errors
Check whether the required proxy settings are configured using HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY. If your organization uses a custom certificate authority, Anthropic supports configuring it with NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. Do not disable TLS verification as a general workaround. See the official troubleshooting guidance for proxy and certificate details.
Choose where Claude Code should run
Keep Claude Code and your project in the environment whose tools and filesystem you intend to use. For WSL work, use the Linux toolchain and paths inside WSL; for a Windows-native workflow, use the native Windows route in Anthropic’s current setup guide.

These distinctions follow Anthropic’s setup guide and troubleshooting guide. A WSL failure does not by itself mean Claude Code is unsupported: first identify the exact error and the environment producing it.
