To run Claude Code without approving every step, use its non-interactive print mode, tightly limit available tools and turns, isolate the workspace, and make the result easy to inspect. These controls can make a bounded repository task more predictable; they do not make an agent perfectly autonomous or eliminate the need for review.
1. Start with print mode and choose an output format
Anthropic documents claude -p (also called --print) as non-interactive mode for scripts and pipelines. The common-workflows guide also describes using it in GitHub Actions. A simple invocation is:
claude -p "Summarize the failing tests and suggest a minimal fix"For a script that needs to consume the response, select an output format rather than assuming the default text is machine-readable. The CLI reference lists text, json, and stream-json as choices. Anthropic says JSON output is useful for parsing responses programmatically. See the CLI reference and common workflows.

Pick the format based on what the next step can reliably parse. A JSON response is not, by itself, proof that the requested work succeeded; validate the fields and repository changes your workflow depends on.

2. Allow only the tools the task requires
The CLI exposes --allowedTools and --disallowedTools to control tool access. Anthropic’s workflow documentation shows preconfiguring allowed tools for automation. Start from the narrowest set that can complete the job: a task that only reads files and reports findings should not receive broader capabilities than it needs, while a task that edits code may need an explicitly permitted way to modify files.
Permissions determine which actions can run without further approval. Anthropic’s security guidance describes controls for tool use, write scope, and command approval; it also recommends reviewing suggested commands and changes to critical files. A broad permission grant expands what an unattended process can do. Do not treat --dangerously-skip-permissions as a default automation setting: the CLI reference labels it for cautious use. Prefer a deliberately configured, limited tool set over removing safeguards merely to avoid prompts.

Use --max-turns to limit agentic turns in non-interactive mode. It provides a bound on the agent’s turn count, not a guarantee that the task will finish or that every operation will fit within that limit. Pair it with a sharply scoped request and, where the surrounding job runner supports it, an external timeout and a defined retry policy.

For example, ask for a single change with a clear acceptance condition rather than “improve the project.” Decide in advance what the workflow should do if Claude Code reaches the turn limit, the job times out, or a retry encounters partial changes. Those timeout and retry policies belong to your CI or orchestration environment; they are operational recommendations, not Claude Code flags established by the cited documentation.
4. Isolate the workspace and treat inputs as untrusted
Run automation in a disposable branch or isolated workspace so proposed changes can be inspected before they affect shared work. Anthropic’s security documentation recommends considering virtual machines for scripts and tool calls, particularly when external services are involved, and advises caution with untrusted content. It also notes that third-party MCP servers are not managed or audited by Anthropic.

- Keep the job’s scope limited to the repository and files it needs.
- Review commands proposed by the agent and inspect changes to critical files before merging or deploying.
- Be deliberate about any external services or third-party MCP servers the run can access.
Isolation reduces the consequences of mistakes; it is not a claim that every attack or unsafe action is prevented. Anthropic’s guidance cautions that no system is completely immune to all attacks. Do not place production credentials or other sensitive access in an unattended run unless your environment has separately established and reviewed an appropriate secrets-handling design.

For troubleshooting, the CLI’s --verbose option enables more detailed logging. Combined with a deliberate output format, logs can help an operator understand what happened and a script can check the response it receives. Preserve enough output to investigate failures, but do not mistake verbose logs for a review of the actual diff.

Anthropic’s setup guide says Claude Code checks for updates at startup and periodically while running, installs them in the background, and applies them the next time it starts. That means repeated jobs may not all start with the same version if the environment is allowed to update itself. For reproducible automation, define how the CLI environment is maintained, and review the resulting output and repository diff as part of the job’s completion process.
