Start by identifying which Google MCP implementation Claude Code is using: a remote Google API endpoint, Google’s local gcloud-mcp server, or a third-party Google-services server. They differ in transport and authentication, so an OAuth fix that applies to one may be irrelevant to another.
First, identify which Google MCP server you configured
Record the server name, whether its configuration uses a remote URL or a local launch command, its scope, and the Google service it targets. Those details determine which troubleshooting branch applies.
| Implementation | What the configuration looks like | Authentication path to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Google API MCP endpoint | A remote HTTP endpoint, such as a Cloud SQL MCP URL | Bearer token and Google Cloud authorization requirements for that endpoint, including ADC, scope, IAM permissions, and possibly a quota-project header. GoogleCloudPlatform EvalBench documentation |
Google-maintained gcloud-mcp |
A local stdio process launched with a command; the repository documents an npx pattern using an @google-cloud package |
Check the local command and the server’s documented configuration. It is not the same setup as a remote Google API MCP endpoint. Google’s gcloud-mcp repository |
| Third-party Google-services server | Depends on that project; it may run locally and use its own OAuth client settings | Follow that server’s instructions for its OAuth client, redirect URI, consent screen, test users, and stored tokens. Third-party server documentation |
Check whether the failure is at startup, connection, discovery, or invocation
A server can start and appear connected while actual tool calls still fail. Separate these stages before changing credentials: a process that cannot spawn needs a different fix from a remote endpoint that returns an authorization error during a tool call.
- Startup: Does the configured local command run? A
Failed to spawnmessage points first to the command or process configuration. - Connection: Does Claude Code reach the configured server?
- Discovery: Can Claude Code list the server’s tools? For some Google API MCP endpoints, initialization and tool listing can succeed without authenticating a later call.
- Invocation: Does an actual tool call succeed? If discovery works but invocation returns
401 Unauthorized, investigate the endpoint’s authentication rather than assuming the server is fully authorized.
Inspect Claude Code’s MCP status and configuration
Use /mcp inside Claude Code or run claude mcp list to see whether the server loaded, connected, and reported an error. Where status details include an HTTP code or server text, use those clues to identify the failing stage.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Verify the exact URL or local command and the configured transport.
- Check the server’s scope, environment variables, and headers for missing values.
- Look for leading or trailing whitespace in configuration values.
- Check for duplicate server names defined at different scopes and for reserved server names.
- For a local process, verify that the configured launch command and required environment are available to Claude Code.
Claude Code’s MCP configuration and troubleshooting details can vary by release. The Claude Code MCP documentation is the place to check current configuration guidance.
For a remote Google API endpoint, test credentials and authorization separately
For the Google API MCP pattern described in GoogleCloudPlatform’s EvalBench documentation, successful initialization or tools/list does not establish that a tool call is authenticated. The tool call requires a valid bearer token. Check the following against the specific endpoint and Google Cloud project:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Application Default Credentials: Confirm the process environment has valid ADC and that the endpoint receives a bearer token derived from the intended credentials.
- Scope: Confirm the credentials carry the API scope required by the service.
- IAM: Confirm the authenticated principal has the permissions required by that endpoint. The needed role depends on the service; a role mentioned for Cloud SQL is not a universal requirement for other Google APIs.
- Quota project: If the endpoint requires it, configure the
X-Goog-User-Projectheader with the appropriate quota project. Whether it is required depends on the endpoint and project setup.
Use the EvalBench endpoint guidance alongside the documentation for the particular Google service. Do not treat a successful tool listing as a substitute for checking the identity and permissions used by the actual API call.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInterpret the dynamic-client-registration error in context
The message Incompatible auth server: does not support dynamic client registration does not necessarily identify the first failure. In the documented Google API endpoint scenario, a missing, invalid, expired, or wrong-kind bearer token can cause a tool call to return 401. Claude Code may then attempt an OAuth fallback that requires dynamic client registration, which those documented endpoints do not support.

For that case, fix the credential or authorization problem behind the 401 rather than assuming the endpoint needs an OAuth registration flow. The documented static bearer-token approach is specific to those Google API endpoints; it is not a general authentication rule for every Google MCP server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use OAuth troubleshooting only for a server that uses OAuth
If you identified a third-party Google-services server that uses OAuth, inspect that project’s own setup rather than applying the Google API endpoint procedure. Its troubleshooting instructions may call for checking the redirect URI, OAuth consent screen, test-user access, or where tokens are stored. The server’s own documentation describes its implementation; its instructions should not be generalized to other Google MCP servers.

Anthropic’s Claude Code repository includes general plugin-authentication guidance on issues such as redirect URLs, scopes, OAuth loops, and token refresh. That guidance can help diagnose an implementation that actually uses that OAuth model, but it does not mean a given Google API endpoint supports Claude Code’s interactive OAuth flow.
