Claude Code can coordinate “tens to hundreds” of parallel subagents through dynamic workflows, according to Anthropic’s May 28, 2026 announcement. That announcement does not establish a maximum of 1,000 agents, so treat that figure as unverified. Dynamic workflows are designed to break larger tasks into parallel work, check the results, and combine them into a coordinated answer.
What are Claude Code dynamic workflows?
Dynamic workflows let Claude Code plan a multi-step task, divide it into subtasks, and send those subtasks to agents working in parallel. Claude then checks the agents’ results and brings them together. Anthropic says the agents can investigate from different angles, try to refute findings, and iterate toward a convergent answer. Workflows may run for hours or days, and saved progress can allow interrupted work to resume.
This is intended for work where parallel investigation or changes across a large codebase can help—not simply for multiplying agents on every prompt. Anthropic’s examples include codebase-wide bug hunts, profiler-guided optimization, security audits, large migrations, modernization, and independent or adversarial review. Those use cases and capabilities are described by Anthropic, not independently benchmarked in the announcement.

Anthropic’s announcement describes “tens to hundreds” of parallel subagents in a session. It does not publish a precise maximum, nor does it substantiate a ceiling of 1,000. The most accurate answer is therefore that Claude Code dynamic workflows can coordinate tens to hundreds of subagents, while the exact upper limit is unspecified in the cited official materials.
#1 Best Overall
Do not confuse a separate documented limit for ordinary subagent delegation with a workflow-wide cap. Anthropic’s multiagent documentation says a session can have at most 25 child threads at a time for subagent delegation; advisor threads and workflow-run threads do not count toward that limit. It describes ordinary subagents as one-level-deep delegation, while dynamic workflows run a program that can coordinate many agents in the background. Anthropic’s multiagent orchestration documentation does not establish that 25 is the maximum for dynamic workflows.
How do dynamic workflows differ from ordinary subagents?
| Approach | How coordination works | Best fit | Documented scale or follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary subagents | Claude delegates work to subagents and reads their reports. | Discrete tasks where direct delegation and follow-up on individual threads are useful. | Anthropic documents one-level-deep delegation and up to 25 child threads at a time per session; advisor threads and workflow-run threads are excluded. |
| Dynamic workflows | Claude writes a program that runs agents in the background and combines their results, potentially across phases. | Larger tasks that benefit from parallel investigation, review, or changes across many files. | Anthropic describes “tens to hundreds” of parallel subagents, but does not state an exact maximum. |
The distinction is about orchestration, not just agent count. A direct subagent handoff is simpler to inspect and follow up on; a workflow can coordinate broader parallel work and result-checking, but can use more tokens and may take longer.

Where are dynamic workflows available, and how do you enable them?
In its May 28, 2026 announcement, Anthropic described dynamic workflows as generally available in Claude Code CLI, Desktop, and the VS Code extension for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, as well as through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry. Anthropic said they are on by default for Max, Team, and Enterprise, and for Claude Code via API. Pro users can enable the feature in /config. Plan eligibility and platform access can change; check Anthropic’s announcement for the current status.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a scoped task. Start with a bounded job—such as reviewing a defined area of a codebase—rather than an open-ended request.
- Enable the feature if needed. Pro users can use
/configin Claude Code, according to Anthropic. The announcement also says users can ask Claude to create a workflow or enable the Claude Codeultracodesetting. - Review the proposed run. Anthropic says the first time a workflow triggers, Claude shows the proposed run and asks for confirmation. Review its scope before proceeding.
- Check organizational controls. Organization administrators can disable workflows through managed settings.
Do dynamic workflows use more tokens?
They can. Anthropic warns that dynamic workflows may consume substantially more tokens than a typical Claude Code session and recommends beginning with a scoped task to understand usage. Because multiple agents can investigate and report in parallel, larger scope can mean more work and token consumption; the announcement does not provide a fixed cost per workflow.

What does Anthropic’s Bun example show?
Anthropic reported that Jarred Sumner used dynamic workflows to port Bun from Zig to Rust. The company said the rewrite involved roughly 750,000 lines of Rust, passed 99.8% of the existing test suite, and took eleven days from first commit to merge. Anthropic also said hundreds of agents worked in parallel, with two reviewers on each file. These are company-reported figures, not an independent benchmark; the rewrite was not yet in production when Anthropic published the announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are dynamic workflows the same as Claude Managed Agents?
No. Dynamic workflows are a Claude Code feature for orchestrating work within coding tasks. Claude Managed Agents is a separate suite of APIs for building and deploying cloud-hosted agents. Anthropic’s April 8, 2026 announcement described multi-agent coordination in Managed Agents as a research preview at that time, and said the service was available on Claude Platform with consumption-based pricing: standard token rates plus $0.08 per active session-hour. That pricing and preview status are specific to the announcement and may have changed. See Anthropic’s Managed Agents announcement for current details.
