Claude Code cloud sessions run coding-agent tasks in the cloud; GitHub Codespaces provides a cloud-hosted development workspace. They address different needs: Claude Code is for delegating and steering work by an AI agent, while Codespaces gives you a configurable environment to use interactively. A team can use both, but neither product should be assumed to include the other’s workflow.

How Claude Code cloud sessions and Codespaces differ

The key distinction is task delegation versus a development workspace. Claude Code cloud sessions let Claude work on a repository task in a cloud environment. Codespaces hosts a development environment that you open and work in through a browser, Visual Studio Code, or GitHub CLI. GitHub’s overview describes Codespaces as a hosted development environment, not as an AI coding agent. Anthropic’s cloud-session documentation and GitHub’s Codespaces overview explain the products in their own terms.

Area Claude Code cloud sessions GitHub Codespaces
Primary role Run and supervise Claude Code tasks on cloud infrastructure. Provide a hosted environment for interactive coding and project work.
What you connect to An agent session associated with a repository and task. A development container running on a GitHub-hosted virtual machine.
Ways to access it Browser at claude.ai/code, Claude mobile or desktop app, or CLI. Browser, Visual Studio Code, or GitHub CLI.
Customization emphasis Cloud environment settings include network access, environment variables, and setup scripts; Anthropic-managed hosting is the default, with self-hosted organization environments also documented. Repository dev-container configuration can define a repeatable environment; without one, Codespaces clones the repository into a default dev-container image.
Built-in task and PR workflow Task delegation, follow-up instructions, diff review, cloud-to-terminal continuation, and optional PR auto-fix are documented. The cited overview documents the workspace and its configuration; it does not establish equivalent built-in Claude-agent task automation.
Billing basis Depends on the Claude plan or account and applicable usage terms; the cited setup documentation does not provide a comparable workload total. Monthly billing; current compute, storage, and usage details are in separate GitHub billing documentation. A comparable total for a Claude-assisted workload is not stated in the cited overview.

These are different product layers, not two versions of the same cloud IDE. A Codespace may be a place where a developer works, while a Claude cloud session is a way to delegate work to Claude. Whether a particular combined workflow fits your repository depends on its configuration, credentials, and organizational policies.

What happens during a Claude Code cloud session?

Claude works on a task while you can step away

Anthropic documents that a cloud session can keep running after you close your laptop, and that you can monitor or steer it from another supported device. This is distinct from running Claude Code locally in a terminal. You can start cloud work from the web, mobile app, desktop app, or CLI; for a repository, the documented command is claude --cloud. See Anthropic’s cloud-session guide for current supported surfaces and behavior.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Review and hand off the work

The cloud workflow supports follow-up instructions and reviewing a session’s diff. You can continue a cloud session in a terminal with --teleport, subject to requirements that include using the same account and repository and having a clean local Git state. The CLI documentation does not describe pushing an existing terminal session into the cloud; Desktop has a separately documented send-to-cloud path. Check your local changes and repository state before planning a handoff.

PR automation is optional and permission-dependent

Anthropic documents an optional PR auto-fix workflow that can respond to clear CI failures and review comments. Requests that are ambiguous or significant may be surfaced for clarification instead of being treated as straightforward fixes. Using this workflow requires the Claude GitHub App to be installed on the repository; it is not an automatic capability of a Codespace. Anthropic’s documentation describes the setup and behavior.

What a Codespace gives you

A hosted, configurable development environment

GitHub runs Codespaces in Docker containers on virtual machines. The documented default uses an Ubuntu image. A repository can configure its environment as code so that project setup is repeatable; if the repository has no dev-container configuration, Codespaces clones it into a default dev-container image. This makes Codespaces useful when you want to open a project in a cloud workspace rather than first delegate a task to an agent. GitHub’s overview covers the workspace model.

Selectable machine configurations

GitHub’s Codespaces overview, accessed October 4, 2026, describes selectable configurations ranging from 2 cores, 8 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage to 32 cores, 128 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. These are documented configuration endpoints, not performance benchmarks or a recommendation to use the largest machine. The available choices and their suitability depend on the workload and current GitHub terms.

GitHub access, eligibility, and security constraints

Connecting Claude Code to GitHub

Anthropic documents two ways to connect: authorize the Claude GitHub App, or run /web-setup in the terminal to send the local GitHub CLI token to the Claude account. Repository access depends on the permissions granted. In Anthropic-hosted environments, Anthropic says GitHub credentials remain encrypted on its servers and do not enter the session VM; Git operations from the VM go through a GitHub proxy. Treat those statements as vendor documentation, and apply your organization’s security review and least-privilege requirements. Anthropic’s cloud-session guide has the details.

Account and organization eligibility

Anthropic’s cloud-session documentation lists Pro, Max, Team, and qualifying Enterprise seats as eligible. It also notes restrictions involving third-party providers and Zero Data Retention (ZDR): organizations using ZDR cannot use cloud-session features. Eligibility and organization controls can change, so confirm the current terms and your organization’s policy before relying on the feature.

Codespaces access is tied to GitHub’s workspace and billing model. Its overview directs readers to separate documentation for current rates, storage, and usage. The cited sources do not establish a like-for-like total cost for a Codespace plus Claude usage, or a universal price winner. Check the applicable billing terms and usage limits for your accounts before estimating a recurring workload budget. GitHub’s overview and Anthropic’s setup documentation cover the relevant product and account paths, but do not provide an aligned total-cost comparison.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Claude Code cloud sessions when your priority is delegating repository work to Claude, steering it while away from your workstation, reviewing its diff, or using the documented PR auto-fix workflow—and your account, GitHub permissions, and organization policy allow cloud sessions.
  • Choose Codespaces when you need a cloud-hosted development workspace that you can use through a browser or VS Code, particularly when the project benefits from a repeatable repository-defined environment.
  • Consider both if you want a hosted development workspace as well as separate cloud execution of Claude tasks. Treat that as a workflow possibility, not a guaranteed first-party integration: validate the exact repository setup, credentials, environment, and policy requirements.

For the latest feature availability, machine choices, eligibility, and billing terms, use the vendors’ current documentation: Claude Code cloud sessions, GitHub Codespaces, and Claude Code setup. The cited product documentation was accessed October 4, 2026; terms and features may change.
