Claude Buddy is a community-described virtual pet that appears in the Claude Code terminal. Community documentation presents it as an animated companion with species, rarity, statistics, cosmetics, a generated name and personality, and commands for petting, muting or hiding it. The reviewed sources do not include verified Anthropic documentation confirming current availability, supported Claude Code versions, subscription requirements or pricing, so treat those details as claims to check against the official product you have installed.
What Claude Buddy is—and what is not confirmed
The feature is documented by a community GitHub repository, a community ClaudeBuddy reference and a DEV Community article with the same subject. Those sources describe a terminal companion associated with Claude Code; they are not official Anthropic release notes. The DEV article says Claude Code 2.1.89 or later and a Pro subscription are required, while the community reference mentions a $20-per-month plan and an approximate 3,986-token session figure. None of those requirements or costs were independently confirmed in the reviewed official material, and they may change by account, region or software release.
Before relying on the feature, check the Claude Code version installed on your machine and the current Claude Code documentation or in-product help. Do not treat the token figure as a measured allowance or a billing guarantee.
How many species are there?
The repository documents 18 species. This is its listed roster, not an independently verified official catalog:

The sources describe these as generated outcomes rather than a menu of 18 officially selectable characters. Your installed build may expose a different roster if the community implementation changes.
What are the rarity tiers?
Both community sources report five tiers and the following percentages:

How the hidden generation model is described
Bones: repeatable visual data
The repository calls the deterministic portion of a buddy’s identity its Bones. According to its README, species, rarity, statistics and cosmetics are recalculated from an account UUID and a salt each session. That means the same account inputs are intended to produce stable visual and stat attributes unless the implementation or seed changes.
Soul: stored identity
The generated name and personality are called the buddy’s Soul. The repository says this data is generated once and stored separately in ~/.claude.json. This is a description of that repository’s implementation, not a confirmed Claude Code platform specification; do not edit the file unless you understand the consequences and have a backup.
Cosmetics and animation
The README lists six eye styles and eight hat options. It says Common buddies always have no hat, while Uncommon and higher can roll any of the eight options. It also describes an idle animation and speech-bubble reactions in the terminal. Exact appearance, animation and stat behavior can differ between builds.

Why the combination count is unclear
The repository contains two incompatible totals. Its heading claims 7,128 unique combinations, but a later formula calculates 18 species × 6 eyes × 5 rarities × 8 hats × 2 shiny states = 8,640 visual combinations. That formula treats every rarity-and-hat pairing as available even though the same README says Common buddies have no hat. Until the implementation or an authoritative maintainer statement resolves those constraints, neither number should be presented as the definitive number of possible buddies.
Can I change my buddy?
The community material describes generation as account-determined, with the name and personality stored separately. It does not establish an official in-product selector for changing species, rarity or cosmetics. The repository separately describes a tool in these words: “This tool lets you browse the full buddy encyclopedia and forge any buddy you want by patching the generation seed in the Claude Code binary.” That is the repository’s description of its own tool, not an Anthropic-supported workflow. Patching a binary can break upgrades, invalidate support assumptions or damage a local installation, so it should not be treated as a normal Claude Code setting.

Run the command in the Claude Code session where the buddy is active. If a command is rejected, use the installed version’s /help output rather than assuming the community syntax is current.
What the sources do—and do not—prove
- They document an 18-species community roster.
- They report five rarity tiers with 60%, 25%, 10%, 4% and 1% odds.
- They describe deterministic “Bones” and stored “Soul” data.
- They list pet, mute and off commands.
- They do not verify Anthropic ownership, official availability, supported plans, current version requirements, pricing or token consumption.
- They do not resolve the 7,128-versus-8,640 combination-count conflict.
Practical verification checklist
- Check the Claude Code version reported by your installation.
- Open the current official Claude Code documentation or in-product help and look for a buddy feature entry.
- Test
/buddy pet,/buddy muteand/buddy offin a disposable session. - Confirm whether muting removes speech bubbles, audio or only another visual element in your build.
- Do not budget around the reported subscription price or token number until your account’s current terms state them.
- Back up configuration before changing
~/.claude.jsonor patching any executable.
The Bottom Line
Claude Buddy is best understood as a community-documented Claude Code terminal pet with 18 listed species, five reported rarity tiers and deterministic identity mechanics. The roster and commands are useful orientation, but availability, requirements, costs, token use and the total number of combinations remain unverified or internally inconsistent; confirm them in the software and documentation you use.
