Anthropic says supported Claude models use an invisible statistical watermark—not hidden characters—to mark generated text. A positive detection suggests Claude was involved, but it does not prove who wrote the passage or how much Claude contributed. A negative result does not prove the text is human-written.
How Claude’s invisible text watermark works
Anthropic describes Claude’s watermark as a version of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text method, published in a 2024 Nature paper. When generating text, a language model repeatedly chooses among plausible next tokens. For some low-stakes choices—where alternatives preserve the meaning—a keyed method shapes the randomness behind those choices. A detector with the relevant key can assess whether the resulting sequence fits the statistical pattern.
The signal is distributed across the text rather than stored as a visible tag. Anthropic says, “Nothing is added to the text and there are no hidden characters.” It also says, “The watermark only applies to words Claude chooses.” These are Anthropic’s descriptions of its implementation, not independent audit findings. Its public explanation describes the method family, not every detail of Claude’s implementation. Anthropic’s explanation of Claude’s text watermark
What a detection result can—and cannot—tell you
Anthropic says detection estimates the likelihood that Claude was involved. It does not establish that Claude originated the text, wrote all of it, or was the only author. The mark cannot identify a particular user, organization, or chat. Nor does an absent mark show that a person wrote the text: another AI may have produced it, or the Claude signal may be too weak to detect.

Detection is probabilistic, and the available official sources do not report a Claude-specific accuracy rate, false-positive rate, or minimum sample length. Treat a result as one piece of evidence, not an authorship verdict. Anthropic’s account of what its detector can establish
Why some Claude text may not be detectable
The watermark has more opportunities to register when the model can choose among different suitable words. A short excerpt contains fewer choices. Exact factual wording, constrained phrasing, and code can leave less room for the choices the method uses. Light proofreading may leave most of a passage’s original wording intact, while heavy editing, paraphrasing, combining it with other writing, or a complete rewrite can weaken or remove the signal. Text from an unsupported model or surface may not have been marked in the first place. Anthropic does not publish a universal minimum length or a guarantee that every marked passage will be detected. Which Claude models and surfaces are covered?
Coverage depends on the model, the way it was accessed, and whether you mean a text watermark or a file credential. Anthropic’s Help Center maintains separate coverage for first-party text watermarking, cloud-partner text watermarking, and C2PA credentials on supported files. Its table lists different combinations rather than one uniform feature set. It says models launched on or after August 2, 2026 support marking at launch, while support for earlier models is being added.

Anthropic says marking for supported models applies across Claude Platform/API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag, subject to platform or feature exceptions. Supported cloud-partner routes include AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. The Help Center also noted that a starred Amazon Bedrock rollout was expected to complete by October 12, 2026; that was a future completion date in the page accessed October 7, 2026, not confirmation here that it finished. Check the current Claude model and surface coverage table before relying on a named model or route.
How to check Claude text or a generated file
Checking text
Anthropic says its text-watermark detector is in private preview for eligible organizations, including regulators, law enforcement, media, fact-checkers, independent researchers, educational organizations, EU civil-society groups, and enterprises with relevant compliance obligations. Anthropic says it plans to expand access. This is not currently a general public checker; if you are outside the preview, Anthropic’s public materials do not provide a self-service text detector.
Checking supported files
For supported generated files, Anthropic directs users to its free Content Checker to check for a Claude-issued Content Credential. This checks a different signal from the statistical text watermark: C2PA credentials are signed metadata associated with a supported file’s provenance history. A file credential is not a text-authorship test, and a text-watermark result is not a file credential. Availability depends on supported file processing. See Anthropic’s marking and file-checking guidance.

Text watermarking versus other AI checks
| Approach | Signal checked | Content and access | What a result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude text watermark | Statistical pattern in token choices, assessed with the relevant key | Supported Claude-generated text; detector in private preview for eligible organizations | Likelihood Claude was involved, not proof of original or sole authorship |
| C2PA Content Credential | Signed provenance metadata | Supported generated files; Anthropic offers a public Content Checker | Credential and file-history information, not a statistical text authorship result |
| General AI-text detector | Linguistic patterns or other detector-specific signals | Depends on the external service | A service’s classification, not Claude’s keyed watermark result |
Anthropic names Pangram as an example of a general AI-text detector using a different method. The official sources cited here provide no comparative accuracy figures, so they do not support ranking that or other approaches against Claude’s watermark.
Why Anthropic says it introduced marking
Anthropic says it is implementing watermarking to comply with the EU AI Act and the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, which it says it signed in July 2026 alongside 190 other signatories. Anthropic also says it applied marking globally at launch because it did not have a durable way to scope it by region. This is the company’s stated rationale. Anthropic’s July 2026 statement
