In networking, a class of service (CoS) groups or marks traffic so network devices can apply suitable quality-of-service (QoS) handling. In the narrower Ethernet sense, CoS is a 3-bit priority value in an IEEE 802.1Q tag. The marking guides policy; by itself, it does not guarantee bandwidth, low delay, or end-to-end quality.

What does class of service mean?

A service class describes a traffic aggregate—traffic grouped because it has similar characteristics or performance requirements. The IETF defines a service class as “essentially a statement of the required characteristics of a traffic aggregate” in RFC 4594, Configuration Guidelines for DiffServ Service Classes (August 2006).

In practice, a class can express needs such as low delay variation for real-time voice, responsive handling for interactive client/server data, high throughput for long-lived flows, or ordinary best-effort handling. The class describes the desired treatment; network devices must be configured to deliver it.

Where is the CoS value in an Ethernet frame?

In Ethernet, CoS commonly means the Layer 2 priority marking carried in the IEEE 802.1Q tag. The tag’s Tag Control Information field includes three User Priority bits for CoS, allowing values from 0 through 7. Cisco’s Catalyst 9400 IOS XE Fuji 16.8.x QoS guide describes 0 as low priority and 7 as high priority in that scheme; other frame types cannot carry this Layer 2 CoS value. See the Cisco Catalyst 9400 QoS Configuration Guide.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

These numbers are priority labels, not guaranteed bandwidth shares or service-level measurements. Their actual effect depends on how the network is configured.

How is CoS different from QoS and DSCP?

CoS is a classification or marking; QoS is the broader set of policies and mechanisms that select traffic and manage it. Those mechanisms can include prioritization, congestion management, and congestion avoidance. DSCP is a separate Layer 3 marking in the IP header, while Ethernet CoS is a Layer 2 marking in the 802.1Q tag. Cisco’s cited guide lists DSCP values from 0 through 63.

Term What it refers to Layer or scope
Ethernet CoS Three-bit priority marking with values 0–7 Layer 2; IEEE 802.1Q tag
DSCP IP traffic marking with values 0–63 Layer 3; IP header
QoS Policies and mechanisms for classifying and handling traffic Configured on network devices; may use markings or other policy
Service class A set of traffic requirements or characteristics May describe treatment across a network domain or domains

There is no universal CoS-to-DSCP mapping established by these definitions. A network’s administrator or vendor policy determines how markings are trusted, translated, and associated with queues or per-hop behavior.

What does a class of service do—and not do?

A CoS marking can help a device identify traffic and select configured handling, such as a queue or forwarding behavior. Differentiated treatment occurs only when the relevant devices recognize the marking or classify the traffic through policy, apply matching rules, and have the resources to serve it.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • A marking alone does not reserve bandwidth.
  • It does not guarantee a particular delay, jitter, loss rate, or end-to-end result.
  • Policies and mappings may differ between network segments, so treatment at one switch does not prove that every downstream network honors the same class.

Why does the meaning vary by network context?

“Class of service” can mean the specific Ethernet priority field or the broader service-class concept: a description of traffic requirements used to guide treatment. The term also appears across technologies. ITU-T E.361 notes that related classes are called VNETs in TDM networks, class types in IP/MPLS/DiffServ networks, and QoS classes in ATM networks. The ITU database identifies E.361 as approved on 2003-05-02 and in force when checked; see the ITU-T E.361 recommendation entry.

When a configuration or specification says “CoS,” check whether it means an 802.1Q Layer 2 value, a broader traffic class, or a vendor-specific policy label. Also verify which device sets or trusts the marking and how it maps to actual treatment.
