Class 2 fax is a control mode that lets a computer or other host manage a fax modem through fax-specific commands. In ITU-T Recommendation T.32, the defined service-class value is +FCLASS=2.0. It describes the modem’s control interface—not fax image quality or a document format.

What Class 2 means on a fax modem

A fax modem has two sides: the host computer, called the data terminal equipment (DTE), and the modem, called the data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). T.32 defines how the host communicates with a facsimile DCE using an asynchronous, fax-specific command interface. In Service Class 2, the modem handles parts of the fax-session control while host software issues commands through that interface. The exact commands and supported options depend on the modem’s implementation.

T.32 specifies the service-class values used with the +FCLASS command: 0 for a data modem, 1.0 for Service Class 1, and 2.0 for Service Class 2. The recommendation says a Class 2 DCE reports both its current service-class setting and the range of services it supports. ITU-T Recommendation T.32 (08/95)

How T.32 differs from T.30

These recommendations cover different layers of fax operation. T.32 specifies the asynchronous control interface between host software and the fax modem. T.30 specifies Group 3 facsimile document-transmission procedures. A modem’s Class 2 support therefore does not, by itself, describe the complete transmission procedure or guarantee compatibility with particular software or another modem.

The catalog lists the 2005 edition and a 2007 amendment on V.34 fallback as in force; this status was shown on October 7, 2026. ITU-T Recommendation T.30

What Class 2 does not tell you

  • It is not a fax-quality rating. “Class 2” does not specify image resolution or tell you how clear a received page will look.
  • It is not a page-image format. It identifies a modem-control service class, not the format in which fax pages are stored.
  • It does not guarantee universal command compatibility. Manufacturers may support different subsets or extensions, so the label alone is not enough to determine whether a modem will work with particular fax software.

How to check a modem’s Class 2 support

  1. Look up the model’s manual or command reference and check whether it documents T.32 Service Class 2 or the +FCLASS=2.0 setting. Manufacturer documentation may describe implementation-specific behavior; for example, Multi-Tech’s Class 2 command documentation covers its implementation.
  2. Check the fax software’s documentation for the modem classes and command sets it supports. A Class 2 label on the modem alone does not establish that the software supports its particular commands.
  3. Confirm the modem’s current service-class setting and reported capabilities using the method documented for that modem and its software. T.32 defines capability reporting, but the available options and how they are exposed can vary by implementation.

Class 2 and Class 2.0: are they different?

In T.32, the defined value for Service Class 2 is 2.0, written in the command as +FCLASS=2.0. A product or manual that says only “Class 2” may be using a shorter label; check its documentation before assuming that its command set or compatibility exactly matches another implementation.
