Three separate business developments point to institutions changing how they retain or attract valuable stakeholders: Citi is shortening its analyst program, Fairfax Financial has agreed to acquire Boots, and LIV Golf is pursuing financing through Chapter 11. They are not linked events, and each remains at a different stage: Citi’s staffing change is planned, the Boots purchase is agreed but not completed, and LIV’s restructuring and 2027 plans still require approvals.
Why is Citi shortening its analyst program?
Citi is moving its investment-banking analyst program from three years to two. Fortune reported that Citi confirmed the change through a spokesperson and that it also applies to analysts currently in their third year. Those analysts are due to be promoted on January 1 if they meet performance standards; promotion is not automatic.
Early private-equity recruiting is context, not a confirmed sole cause
The change comes amid increasingly early private-equity recruiting of junior bankers. Fortune reported that Odyssey Search Partners estimated recruiting typically began after about 11 months of junior bankers’ training in 2010, but by 2024 it began in less than a month. That comparison is attributed to the search firm through Fortune, rather than to an independently reviewed underlying study. Citi’s co-head of North America investment banking, David Friedland, told Bloomberg, as quoted by Fortune: “The reality that private equity is interviewing so early in a banker’s career is very unfortunate and to some extent disappointing,” and, “It’s very hard to make a choice to go into another field in the first month you land on Wall Street.”

What is the Boots deal?
Fairfax Financial Holdings announced on October 7, 2026, that it had entered into agreements with Wittington Investments, the Weston family’s private holding company, to acquire Boots. Fairfax puts the total purchase price at approximately US$8.9 billion, including assumed debt. It also committed to provide, or arrange for an affiliate to provide, up to approximately US$2.3 billion toward the purchase price.
This is an acquisition agreement, not a completed sale. Fairfax’s announcement identifies the risk that the transaction may not complete on anticipated terms or timing. The announced figures do not establish final financing, regulatory timing or the closing outcome.

What is LIV Golf’s financing lifeline?
LIV Golf is pursuing a restructuring through a voluntary Chapter 11 case in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. On September 8, 2026, the league said it had entered a restructuring support agreement with BC Partners Credit and that the contemplated recapitalization would leave the reorganized company majority-owned by players.

Financing remains subject to approval
LIV said the Public Investment Fund had agreed to provide US$49.6 million in debtor-in-possession financing, subject to court approval. On October 5, BC Partners Credit announced an initial committed investment as the first part of targeted cumulative financing of US$300 million. That target is not evidence that the full amount has been funded: the BC Partners announcement says financing is subject to bankruptcy court approval and customary conditions.

LIV has said it intends to emerge from Chapter 11 in early 2027, but the recapitalization remains subject to court and relevant stakeholder approvals. The financing and ownership structure are therefore proposed outcomes, not completed changes.
Will LIV Golf have a 2027 season?
LIV intends to return to team competition in 2027 under new ownership, but its official FAQ says it has not announced a definitive schedule or individual event decisions. The Associated Press reported that financing would allow LIV to begin planning for a 2027 season with ten tournaments, half at international sites. That is a reported plan, not a finalized official schedule; the season remains subject to approvals.

For people holding pre-purchased 2027 event tickets, LIV’s FAQ says tickets remain valid and are not eligible for refunds at that time. Ticket holders should follow direct league communications for any changes.

The comparison is about different ways organizations are trying to retain or attract important stakeholders—not evidence that the three events share a cause. Citi is changing career timing, Fairfax has agreed to a retail acquisition, and LIV is seeking a court-approved restructuring.
