Cisco announced its agreement to acquire Stockholm-based Qeyton Systems on May 12, 2000, for approximately $800 million in Cisco common stock. The deal brought Qeyton’s metropolitan dense wavelength division multiplexing (MDWDM) technology into Cisco’s optical networking portfolio; Cisco said it completed the acquisition on June 16, 2000.
What Cisco acquired from Qeyton
Qeyton Systems was a privately held company founded in 1998 and based in Stockholm, Sweden. At the time of the announcement, Cisco said it had 52 employees. Its core offering was metropolitan dense wavelength division multiplexing, or MDWDM, designed for service providers’ metro networks. Cisco’s acquisition announcement described the technology and the company’s planned place in Cisco’s organization.
DWDM increases the capacity of a fiber-optic link by sending multiple wavelengths—different “colors” of light—through the same fiber. Qeyton’s metro-focused approach addressed links between carrier points of presence (POPs) and customer sites. Its optical ring design could add capacity over existing metro fiber rather than requiring a provider to build or lease additional fiber for that capacity.

Cisco presented Qeyton as a way to extend its optical networking capabilities and offer service providers a more complete optical solution for metropolitan networks. The company’s stated rationale was that combining Qeyton’s metro DWDM technology with Cisco’s existing offerings would support an end-to-end optical network for providers.

Cisco planned to integrate Qeyton’s technology into its Optical Networking Solutions (ONS) 15000 family and place it within Cisco’s optical networking group in the service-provider line of business. The announcement established an integration plan; it does not, by itself, establish when or in what form particular products reached customers.

What the acquisition did—and did not—establish
The deal’s strategic focus was metropolitan service-provider capacity: using wavelength-division multiplexing to carry more traffic across existing fiber and extending Cisco’s optical portfolio toward metro links. Cisco’s announcement tied that technology to its ONS 15000 family and an end-to-end network strategy.
