To monitor Cisco NetFlow, configure a compatible Cisco device to export flow records to a collector, then use analysis software to interpret the records. SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer and ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer both document Cisco NetFlow support, but neither should be treated as a universal fit: confirm your device, software release, export format, and operational requirements before choosing a tool.

What Cisco NetFlow monitoring does

NetFlow monitoring summarizes network traffic as flow records. A record can include source and destination addresses and ports, protocol, packet count, and data size. That makes flow analysis useful for questions such as which conversations or endpoints account for the most traffic. SolarWinds describes the process as an exporter, collector, and analysis application; those functions may be combined in a product, but the exporter must still send a format the collector can process. SolarWinds explains the NetFlow architecture.

Flow records are not a packet capture, device telemetry feed, or application log. They provide summarized flow information, and the detail available depends on what the device exports and how it is configured. Cisco’s Firepower documentation describes NetFlow statistics as supplementing discovery and connection information in that security-management context; it should not be read as a guide to every Cisco NetFlow deployment. Cisco documents that Firepower use case.

How to set up a NetFlow monitoring pipeline

  1. Check the exporter. Confirm the router or switch and its software release can export the flow format your collector supports, and identify which interfaces should export records.
  2. Configure the exporter and destination. Set the device to send records to the collector’s address and receiving port, using configuration appropriate to that exact Cisco platform and release.
  3. Configure the collector. Enable receipt of the relevant flow version or protocol, and confirm any platform dependencies. For example, SolarWinds says exporting devices and relevant interfaces must also be monitored in SolarWinds Platform/NPM.
  4. Verify receipt and usefulness. Confirm records arrive, map to the expected interfaces, and contain useful source and destination details. A device that exports records is not necessarily producing a template or field set the analyzer can interpret.

SolarWinds gives port 2055 as NTA’s default collection port and says its collector can receive NetFlow v5 and v9 only when the v9 data includes all fields of the v5 template. Its documentation includes an older Cisco 6500 example; do not reuse those commands without checking the guide for your own model and IOS or NX-OS release. See SolarWinds’ NTA configuration requirements.

Documented product options

The table summarizes capabilities and requirements stated by the vendors. These are documentation claims, not results of independent testing. The available product pages do not establish current prices, comparative scale limits, or a best overall product.

SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) SolarWinds lists NetFlow v5 and v9, IPFIX, Cisco NBAR2, sFlow, Juniper J-Flow, Huawei NetStream, and other formats. Devices must be configured to export to NTA; the exporting devices and relevant interfaces must also be monitored in SolarWinds Platform/NPM. The documented default collection port is 2055. NetFlow v9 requires all fields of the v5 template for NTA to receive it as described in the setup guide. SolarWinds describes top-talker visibility, historical traffic reporting, alerts, custom graphs, and correlation of flow analytics with broader network-performance metrics. Current deployment sizing and licensing basis: not stated in the cited SolarWinds product and setup pages.
ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer ManageEngine lists Cisco Catalyst, AVC, ASR, Meraki, Nexus, IOS routers, WLC, ISR-G2, and other Cisco device categories. Listed flow families include NetFlow, sFlow, cflowd, J-Flow, IPFIX, NetStream, and Cisco NBAR. The vendor’s support list is a starting point; verify the exact Cisco model and exporter configuration. Further collection prerequisites: not stated in the cited support page. Specific analysis and reporting capabilities: not stated in the cited Cisco support page. Current deployment sizing and licensing basis: not stated in the cited Cisco support page.

How to choose for your Cisco network

Start with compatibility rather than a feature checklist. For each candidate, verify the exact Cisco hardware and IOS or NX-OS release, export format and template, interfaces and sampling configuration, and whether the flow source must also be monitored in another platform. A broad claim of NetFlow support does not prove that a particular device configuration will work.

  • Match the data to the question. For top talkers, conversations, and traffic history, check that the exporter supplies the fields and records needed for those views. If you need packet-level evidence or application-specific detail, determine whether flow data is sufficient or whether another telemetry source is required.
  • Check reporting and alerting. Compare the alerts, historical reports, and graphs you need for troubleshooting and capacity planning—not just the number of formats listed.
  • Account for the existing stack. Identify platform dependencies, interface-monitoring requirements, and integrations with the tools your team already uses.
  • Plan for retention and scale. Estimate how much history operations require and how collection should be distributed across sites. SolarWinds describes distributed collection as an option for larger or geographically distributed environments, but the cited pages do not provide a product sizing limit.
  • Verify deployment and licensing. Ask vendors for current packaging, deployment choices, and how licensing changes as the environment grows. The cited pages do not establish comparable current prices or license terms.

ManageEngine publishes a vendor-authored comparison that suggests evaluating environment size, flow protocols, security analytics, real-time visibility, alerts, retention, integrations, hybrid or cloud coverage, and license scaling. Those are useful questions to ask, not independent comparative test results. The page also includes PRTG, but that competitor-authored comparison is not enough to establish PRTG’s current capabilities; confirm them with Paessler before treating it as an option. Read ManageEngine’s comparison criteria.

Questions to settle before deployment

  • Does the vendor explicitly support your Cisco model, software release, and exported flow version or template?
  • Which interfaces export records, and are sampling settings compatible with the analysis you need?
  • What fields appear in the received records, and can the tool map them to the correct devices and interfaces?
  • Does collection require a separate monitoring platform, and can your team retain enough history for its operational needs?
  • What current deployment and licensing terms apply to your environment?
