Cisco’s 800G Linear Pluggable Optics (LPO) can reduce power use in targeted AI scale-out links, but they are not universal plug-and-play replacements for conventional optics. LPO moves digital signal processing (DSP) out of the optical module and into the host platform. Cisco says that change cuts optical-module and switch power on supported systems; each link still needs compatibility validation across its host and optics at both ends.

What changes when a link uses LPO?

In a conventional retimed optical module, the module contains a digital signal processor that helps condition the signal. LPO removes that DSP from the pluggable optic and shifts the processing to the host switch or router. That architectural change is the basis for Cisco’s power argument: the module itself uses less power, while the host must support the LPO design.

Cisco announced OSFP 800G LPO for AI scale-out networking. The OSFP form factor describes the pluggable module; it does not, by itself, establish that an optic will work in any OSFP port.

What power savings does Cisco claim?

Cisco claims its 800G LPO uses 50% less power per optical module than retimed optical modules, and that its supporting N9000 and 8000 systems use 30% less overall switch power. These are Cisco’s figures for its implementation and supported systems, not independent comparative measurements or a guarantee for other platforms. Cisco’s February 10, 2026 blog discusses the figures in the context of the N9364E-SG2X powered by Silicon One G200. Read Cisco’s blog.

Cisco’s February 10, 2026 announcement also said that G300-powered systems and optics would ship during 2026. That schedule statement is not confirmation of present availability: check Cisco or an authorized channel for current regional supply and the exact supported configuration. See Cisco’s announcement.

Why LPO is not a plug-and-play choice

Optical executive Bill Gartner told Network World that Cisco cannot claim its LPO optic—or another vendor’s—will work simply by plugging it into any host. He said the host and the LPO optic at the far end need pairwise testing. In practice, a deployment decision should account for the whole link, not just the module’s 800G rating or connector.

How to weigh LPO for an AI network

Consideration What to assess
Power Cisco claims 50% lower optical-module power than retimed modules and 30% lower overall switch power on supporting systems. Treat those as vendor claims tied to Cisco’s implementation, not universal results.
Compatibility Validate the specific host platform and the optics at both ends; the 800G OSFP designation alone does not establish interoperability.
Serviceability Gartner noted that a failed pluggable optic can be replaced individually, limiting the affected scope. This qualitative point is not a comparative reliability or total-cost study.
Deployment role Cisco presents LPO as a targeted option for 800G AI scale-out links, rather than an answer for every network link or every AI-networking constraint.

That makes LPO most relevant when reducing power is a priority and the organization can validate the precise supported link configuration. Power savings alone do not settle the decision: account for compatibility work and the operational plan for replacing failed components.
